So, after missing a very nice 10pt during ML season, I was feeling really down and had all but given up on my season. Well, my husband insisted that I go out. He said he had figured it up and thought it would be right at the second rut. After moaning and groaning, I go, really just to shut him up......boy, am I glad I did. I was sitting in a ladder stand blind overlooking an open field, had hit the can call and grunt call a few times. I heard what sounded like a heard of elephants, splashing and leaves crunching and just a lot of chaos down in the woods behind me. Out burst a doe at full speed, I hear leaves crunching behind her so I know something is chasing her, I get my gun up and ready just in case. Within 25-30 ft this really tall big bodied buck comes out running behind her. He was grunting every step he took, very cool to see/hear, I couldn't see how wide he was but knew he had really good mass. I decided I would try and take him, as I'm trying to get settled on him something catches my eye behind him.....it's two more bucks, both much smaller than him. Anyway, my buck is following this doe and I know in a few seconds he was gonna be gone so I tried grunting to stop him, he kinda made a u-turn and was facing the bucks behind him, it almost seemed as he was gonna fight.....but I didn't give him the chance....as soon as he stopped....BOOM....he ran about 25 yards and fell. The doe and a buck ran into the woods while the third buck went towards my buck, as if trying to figure out what happened. He ended up heading towards woods and then another buck, a spike, also ran across field. It was definitely the second rut with that doe being followed by 4 different bucks. Thank you to my husband for making me go.

Congratulations again. :D A real nice late season buck.

Figure he was a 3.5 year old but have not checked his teeth. Mass between bases and brows are 4.25, beams about 19 inches.

First buck killed with my .243 handloads, 100 grain hornady interlock imr 4350 sent from her savage model 10. Entry small right behind the shoulder, nice exit(can see in the second pic) not that it mattered since she took out the heart and both lungs. She saved the shoulders on this one. ;)

Thanks Martin. I try to get good field photos. Almost timed it right to get a painted sunset in the background similar to our 10 year olds field pics. Had i known we would get the reds and pinks i would have waited a few more minutes, was a pretty stunning sunset that evening just after i pulled the tractor up to the garage door.
