Thanks for all of the comments guy's. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to take this buck, regardless of what he scores. I have taken a lot of deer with gun and my 1st doe with an arrow last year was awesome, but... I will NEVER forget the flood of emotion that I felt when I saw him go down. I was extatic and crying at the same time. My hand was steady as ever until I saw him drop, then I started shaking so bad I could barely use my cell phone to call my wife and son! I took this deer in Baltimore on my friends farm.

Took me a while to post up the pics but here he is. I took him on Friday, November 13th and this is my 1st archery buck. He crossed a path in the woods at about 70 yards in front of me and my heart started to pound! I did not think that he would turn my way but he did, about 60 yards on the other side of a thicket. I grunted at him out of desperation and he just stopped and looked for a minute then kept on his way. I grunted again, a little louder and longer and it set him off! He smashed into some brush, thrashing it with his rack and circled around downwind behind me - giving me exactly a 23 yard shot. I sent a two blade rage through him and he went about 40 yards down into a creek and stopped. I could see his rack looking around and then wobble and then he dropped! He is at the taxidermist now and I cannot wait to get him back home! Any guess on what he will score? I am thinking mid 120's to 130. His inside spread is just shy of 19 inches. Thanks for letting me share!

The new Federal tipped Barnes slugs...
timberghost replied to timberghost's topic in Shotguns & Accessories
Yes, there is a price difference. The Hornady SST's are usually $11.99 while the new Barnes slugs came it at $15.99 a box. After these slugs worked so well, I went back and I've got a total of 10 boxes with the same lot #. These ought to last me for quite a while! -
After switching to the Hornady SST's a two years ago (with OK on game performance) I saw that Federal had a new tipped Barnes Expander slug out. I was always very impressed with how these slugs performed on game and was anxious to try them out. I picked up a few boxes and headed to the range this am. I ended up putting 4 rounds in a inch at 50 yards and pulled my 5th shot a little making the total group size 2 inches for 5 rounds at 50 yards. I just wanted to share my results and say that it looks like my 11-87 and Leupold 2-7 have a rekindled relationship with those wicked barnes slugs again! Good luck this year everyone and stay safe!

Re: need help with 1187 What length barrel? I would start out by checking the o-ring and also make sure that the gas port in the barrel is clean and open.

Re: I got a new rifle yesterday! Thanks for the replies. AJ, yes it's a factory .300 WSM. It looks like this poor rifle sat in the gunshop for a few years, the ship date on the packaging noted 2003. I'm really undecided on what glass to mount on this rifle. I looked through a Burris Fullfield II the other day w/ the ballistic plex reticle and I really liked the clarity. I just cannot decide if I want to go with a 3-9x or a 4-14x scope. I am leaning toward the 4-14x in the burris or a Nikon Monarch. I also like the idea of the Nikon Buckmasters with the side focus but I've not been able to handle one and was unsure of the quality. Oh well, I've got some to to think about it as my Elk trip will be next year. Thanks again to all of you and if anyone has suggestions on the scope, let 'em rip.

Yesterday the weather here was pretty crappy do I decided to take my son to the local outdoor store to do some browsing. I have been thinking about buying a "large game" rifle for some time because the one thing missing from my collection is a "large bore" centerfire. I decided to check out the used guns. Not much to see there so we went to the main sales counter. I looked at some Tikkas and some Remingtons but then I saw a pretty nice Savage with a laminated stock. I asked to see it and noticed that it was marked Clearance. It was chambered in .300 WSM and I had some gift cards left over from Christmas so I said what the heck and bought it. I ended up walking out the door for just over $300.00 so I feel that I got a fair deal. I did a bedding job today using Steel Bed and I will be intalling a new trigger soon (this gun is pre accutrigger - which is fine because I have a SSS trigger on my .22-250 that I love. Anyway I am just trying to decide on some glass for this rifle. Not sure which way I want to go so if anyone has some suggestions for a scope and magnification range, I'm all ears. Here is the pic!

Re: Guns for Christmas It's not a rifle but I'm pretty excited so I'll add my gift here. My wife completely suprised me this year. She has never bought a gun for me on her own and I think that she did an outstanding job. Actually I've never received a gun as a gift before. She bought me a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in .44 Mag with a 7.5" barrel. I went into Gander Mountain on Monday to look at some red dot scopes but I found a Leupold 2x that I really liked. I asked them how much and they could not find the box or the price in the computer. I ended up out the door with the scope for $148.00 so I figured that I could not pass this one up. I also picked up some dies, brass and bullets. I am thinking that I will have a lot of fun with this one!

Re: Rough week in Ohio Thanks for the comments guy's. Buckfever 1001 - I live in Grove City but a friend has just under 300 acres in Hocking County - That is where I hunt during gun season.
-
Well there is no other way to say it but we had a rough gun season in Ohio. I passed up 5 deer on Monday ( some small bucks and a few does ) hoping for a few of the "big boys" that I've seen while bowhunting. I did not see another deer until Thursday as I was getting down from the stand. She was a mature doe and she just stood there and watched me until I was on the ground. I could have taken her but legal hours were over and I wanted to do the right thing. Saw a few really small does on Friday and again passed them up. Saturday was my last day to hunt and at 8:00 am this buck came up my ravine following a small doe and I decided to take him. It was an 80 yard shot and the Hornady SST's did their job. He is not the biggest buck but I am proud of him, also the fact that I sat in a stand from sunrise to sunset from Monday to Saturday morning made this harvest even sweeter. I hope that you all had a safe and successful season.
-
To all of the Ohio hunters, and everyone else for that matter, good luck next week. I am leaving for the cabin on Saturday morning and will check in next week. I wish everyone a safe and successful week!

Re: Hornady SST Slug range report Regarding the Zero, to be honest I never adjusted my scope. I will probably be right at 1.5" high at 100 yards and about 1.5" low at 150(which is the absolute maximum range for a shot from my favorite stand). I like to use the "point blank range" to sight in so when (if) a big boy steps out I don't have to think about trajectory - just put the crosshairs right behind the should and squeeze the trigger. I look at it as one less thing to have to think about.
-
Re: Hornady SST Slug range report No problem guy's. I have not seen them for anything but 12 gauge but it's hard enough finding them for the 12. I really wanted to see what the 5 shot group would come out to but I only had 2 boxes so now I have a total of 7 slugs left... I only plan on needing one (hopefully!).
-
To make a long story short... I shoot a 12 gauge 11-87 w/ the cantilever mount and a Leupold 2-7 shotgun scope. For the past few years I've been shooting the Federal Barnes expander 3/4 ounce load with great results (right around 3" groups at 100 yards) Anyway, federal changed something about these shells last year (when the packaging changed) and they don't shoot nearly as well as the older slugs - 5-6" groups at 100. When I saw the ad for the Hornady SST's I really wanted to try them. After searching high and low I located 4 boxes. I also picked up some the Remington Core Lokt, Lightfields and a few others. I went to a friends house this morning to see how they would do. I was dreading this morning because as you all know, sighting in a slug gun can get expensive and painfull. I decided to try the Hornadys first. We set up a target (lasered to 73 yards), I had a fresh 4x8 sheet of plywood and my small backer board to be sure that I could see where I was hitting if I was off the paper. I chambered the first shell, settled the gun in the rest and slowly squeezed the trigger. When I recovered from the recoil and looked through the scope and I was shocked. A nice hole dead center exactly 1.25" high. I did not want to get to excited so after a few minutes I fired another shot. I did not see a new hole. So again I fired another shot and again.....no new hole!!!!!! We walked down range and this is what I saw!!!!!! I did not even need to touch my scope! I took a picture of the target so you can see the hole in the target and the hole in the wood. This is by far the smallest group that I've fired with a slug gun. Put the "deerslayer" away and then played with my "new" Winchester M69. Sorry that this is such a long post but I've been looking for some real reviews of these slugs on the net for a while without any luck so I figured that I would do my part.

Re: Ruger Red Label for sale SOLD PENDING FUNDS - If the deal falls through, I'll repost. Thank you all.

I have for sale a great Ruger Red Label, 12 gauge, 28" barrels. This gun has one of the best pieces of wood that I've ever seen on a Red Label. The checkering is still very sharp. It comes with the box and all of the paperwork, two skeet chokes, improved cylinder, modified and full choke. I bought this shotgun new in 1998 but I just never shoot it anymore and need the money. The one thing that I need to disclose is the the forend did crack the first year of use and there is normal but light handling marks on the forend - The crack is located between the receiver metal and the locking clip on the forend. It has been repaired with steel bed epoxy, stained to match, wet sanded and oil finished. I had to take a picture outside just to get the repair to be visable on the camera. If anyone would like additional pictures just let me know what you want to see. I can do a "face to face" sale in central Ohio. I'm asking $850.00 + actual shipping or best offer. E-mail me at [email protected]

Re: I got my mount back! Thanks for the comments guy's! I guess that I mislead some of you. He was not my first deer but my first "wall hanger". I have been deer hunting for 6 years and he is the third buck that I've shot. My first buck was a very small 6 point that no matter how much my friends tease me about, I'm still proud of and have a antler mount along with the 8 point that I shot three years ago - he scored 108". I shot the buck in the picture with my T/C Encore w/ a 260 Winchester Platinum Tip. He was my first deer w/ a muzzle loader though! The DNR officer said that he was only 3.5 years old. Thanks again for the replies fellas!

I just wanted to share a picture of the first good buck that I shot (FINALLY!!!) He has 13 points and pretty good mass. I just wanted to share my good fortune. Thanks.
