Re: Thanks DartonMan.. Yep ... Al is a pretty nice guy alright. He's got a heart bigger than he is, and he's a good size fella. He comes across as a big tough prison cop at work, but we all know he's just a marshmallow in disguise. Way to go Al ... your a generous guy, always going out of your way to make somebodies day. I'm pretty proud to have him as a friend of mine, I can tell you that. Re: Bear Yes ...Blackbears definately hibernate during the winter. The higher altitude bears seem to go into a longer, more solid hibernating state, because of the longer, colder, winter weather. Like ParrotHead says though, it depends on location. The bears , for instance, in the Valley (at sea level ) where I live, go into a semi-hibernation. By this, I mean that they do wake up from time to time and wonder about to get a quick meal .... then go back to sleep. I have seen them out on numerous occassions, in Jan, Feb when the weather gets really warm. I'm no biologist, but I have seen this for myself over the years. We have lots of black bears here.

Re: Do not know what to do? I agree about praying about the situation and praying for the step dads salvation as well. In the meantime though,the well being of that child would be first on my list of priorities, as I'm sure it is with you and your wifes. If possible get some investigating done to get the goods on what he is up to, in case you need it in court, someday soon. My hat is off to you for what you are doing and the sacrifices you and your family are making for this child. Hang in there and be strong. Having forgiveness in your heart for this man, is a good thing, but will never really be completed until he wakes up and changes. May God be with you and your family in this struggle.

Re: What are the chances? I think the chances of him getting nicked like that and not getting too alarmed over it are pretty good. Deer (all animals) are getting pricked and biten by ticks, insects and thorns all the time in there every day travels and tend to take a prick like that caused by a glancing shot, as a fact of life sometimes.He probably hardly felt it. It's ussually the sound of the bow going off, that causes them to jump, in a situaton like that. If you have a fairly quiet bow, there would be no red flags going up in the deers mind.

One w/30/30....75 yrds. one w/shotgun/ooobuckshot ...25 yrds one w/shotgun/000buclshot ....10 yrds I would like to take one with a bow, and have had many, many opportunities, but my wife doesn't like the meat, so I can't justify shooting one just to say I got one with the bow, unless I'm going to eat it. No track,dropping, hair on fence, rub or scrape is going to tell you the exact size of a deers rack ....LOL Rubs do give you a fair idea of it's size, just from the size of the tree he decides to tackle, however large bucks take on small shrubs as well, so you can't always tell from seeing a few rubs. Some rubs (known as community rubs) will be made by a larger buck, but visited and re-rubbed by much smaller bucks. So you can be fooled there too if you see a small buck visiting a rub, that is on a big tree into thinking the smaller buck made it. I sure wish I knew all the answers, we all do.

I would say so, but you can bet there will be folks who disagree with me ...LOL Although it's not an exact science and I am no scientist, Larger deer do, for the most part, produce larger droppings and when I see one of those toilet-paper-roll sized clumps, I know there is a nice buck in the area. I wash mine after a few hunts or if I happen to work up a sweat in them. I use baking soda only and ussually put them through twice if they are really soiled from dragging out a deer etc. I also store them in a plastic, unscented large garbage bag. I'll use scent away on my hat, because I don't like washing it too often.
