  1. With the thermometer at 4 degrees right now (and only a week ago -26) it's pretty hard to even start dreaming. But in about 5 weeks I'll be off for a Rio hunt in Tejas !!! I'm getting a little antsy. Yep.
  2. The gassers aren't horrible. But the diesels are like a deep freeze. And it ain't a great job ANY day................................
  3. -26 here this morning............... AIR TEMP !!! Not wind chill........... You want cold weather ??? You can have ALL this crap you want !!!! I'm done with it.
  4. Rick Santorum has a snowball's chance. But he is the kinda no-apologies candidate the GOP needs to nominate.............
  5. Finally got an old dinosaur put together and to the range. Picked this revolver up a couple years back. It is a 1966 Herter's Single Six in .401 Herter's Power Mag. The top-strap had been already altered. So I just went and altered it some more and put a Weaver rail on top. Picked up a fairly period-correct 2.5x Redfield from a fellow a while back. A set of Weaver rings and I was off to the range. It took a few at 50 then back to 25 yards to figure where I was. Then out to 100 to see if I could hit the broad side of a barn. I am an admitted lousy pistol shot. Ended up with 2 groups at 100 yards that were nearly identical.......... one flier and a tolerable 5-shot pattern. This is only the first load I have tried. So the gun may like something else better. These are 180 gr. JHP's at around 1700 fps at 100 yards........ 5 shots. _________________________
  6. I (we) can only eat so many ourselves. Can't eat as many as we needed rid of, so..............................
  7. Good deal !!! Now the waiting............................................
  8. Actually, all 7 flinter deer were given away. There are some local families that needed them worse than we did.
  9. Atta boy Eric !! You & Pap oughta get a 2D tag next year and come out a day. You know the way............. Might hire your guns for some doe whackin'. And you'd get to look at some different trees !!
  10. Well...................with the PA flintlock season closing last Saturday, the final tally of baldies taken with flint & coal on the Strut10 Ranch is 7. Two for me. Two for Uncle John. Two for my deer slaying buddy Carmen and one for my brother. All in less than a two week period. The neighbor boys said they were getting some pretty bad deer damage in their soybean fields. Said they'd like to have a few of the does knocked out. So we stacked 'em like cord wood for them. Don't go tellin' a bunch of rednecks you want deer dead unless you REALLY mean it !! :clown:
  11. If you're dead set on a .338, then why not a .340 Weatherby. Best (beast) of both worlds.
  12. Pretty much, any "over the counter" 100-120 grain load will work just fine on whitetail.
  13. Here was our morning on the STRUT10 Ranch.......... First smoke was my brother. Nice doe at 40 yards with a .50 cal Blue Ridge rifle and a PRB......his second flinter deer in as many shots. I told him he needs to quit now. Then about 1 minute later on the other hill..........Uncle John downs another nice doe at 40-ish yards with his self-built .54 cal and a PRB. This deer makes somewhere around 35 flinter deer for his career........ I got LOTS of exercise trying to get deer sneaking around. Bro still has a buck tag but no luck seeing one today. Try again Saturday.
  14. Thank you, sir !! This is really becoming an addiction for me. I had this rifle for several years and just finally went out with it once last year. Didn't get the bug too bad. But the last several days I put some time in and the deer were fairly cooperative. the ball that downed today's doe is probably about the 10th or 12th shot that's ever been fired from the gun and several of those were unload discharges. But from the 3 shots I took last year to sight in and the few I took at deer, it seems to be a VERY accurate rifle with a VERY fast ignition time. I think I will hang on to it.
  15. And I'm outta tags. This gal walked about 60 yards in front of my flintlock a little after 8:00 this morning. Bang, flop. Or more accurately..........pfft, bang, flop.
  16. Thanks fellers !! General muzzleloader season here is flintlock ONLY. Was pretty nice this morning....................ended up being near 60 degrees this afternoon. My kinda winter so far. Now if it would only stay this way til April !!!
  17. Took my flintlock out this morning and after I watched a flock of 28 turkeys fly down all around me, I caught this little dude sneaking across below me. I glassed this deer HARD and had it pegged as a yearling doe. WRONG. I am still kicking myself in the rear for shooting a button buck. But anyhoo.......... I left a PA Conical loose from 80 grains of FFg at 60-ish yards and whooped him just exactly where I was aiming. He ran about 25-30 yards before bouncing off a couple trees and hitting the ferns. Ba-da-bing !! My first flintlock deer. This flintlock thing could become QUITE addictive !! I have another doe tag I'm fixing to pin on another flintlock deer.
  18. Would NOT use steel shot of ANY size past about 20 yards on a coyote. Best bet will be either lead or an HTL shot somewhere between #2 and #4 buck. As with shooting anything of size with a shotgun, you need to burn some shells at the patterning board to see which give you sufficient pattern density. In my coyote shotgun (BPS 10 gauge) #2 copper-plated lead is the go-to load.
  19. Wow !!!! Another GREAT deer Al !!!!!!! MUCHO CONGRATS to you !!!!!!!!!!
  20. Them longbeards are more fun in the spring anyways !!!!

  22. Yeah. It should NOT be bouncing them in at 200. Call Vortex.
  23. Don't know what caliber you are shooting. But sighted in at 100 yards, virtually NO round should be hitting that low at 200 without even TOUCHING the turrets. Something is afoul. +1 on calling Vortex customer service ASAP
