Re: Good luck tomorrow! Squirrel Hunter, I'm in the southerntier/western NY, so youm ust be up north more from me? I got drenched this morning waiting by the field for the turkeys that didn't show. I think they stayed on their roosts but I'm headed out this evening to the same field.

Re: My First Deer THE FACTS Well I hope that deer truly was spoiled... Are you sure when cleaning/gutting the deer you didn't cut the gall bladder which is near the liver? The gall bladder contains bile which is a really green liquid and if that leaks out onto anything, it will be green and taste/smell horrible...

Re: What would you do? There is only one stand I rarely wear a harness in, it is about 20 feet off the ground and hasa nice wide platform. The other stands like Andy's climber and a small hang-on I wear my harness in because it would be dumb not to,lol.

Re: My First Deer Considering the cold temperatures we are having at night (I'm from western NY/southern tier), that deer would not have been bad unless it was gut shot..... The first deer I "got" was shot, tracked, found, cleaned, aged for a couple days and put in the freezer. In my opinion, a first deer is not one that was left in the woods to waste....

To everyone who's fall turkey season opens. NY's opens tomorrow and I'll be out there. I watched 4 turkeys out in a corn field tonight for over an hour before they went in to roost. I didn't hear them fly up but I have a general idea of where they are. Wish me luck! I'm hoping to put an end to this 2 year no turkey streak, with the Lord's blessing of course. Stay warm, dry and safe out there tomorro! It is suppose to get rainy in the afternoon.

So I went out tonight looking for turkeys as tomorrow is the opener. After watching 4 turkeys in a field for ver an hour, when it started to get cold and the sun had set, I started walking back across the middle of a corn field towards home. This field is behind our house, and we have woods on the edge. Well there is this small patch of pines sticking out in the middle. As I'm walking, I stop and look towards it and there I see a deer looking at my and antlers at least ear width wide and tall. I pull my binocs out to get a quick look and it was a really nice 8 or 10 point buck! Big for our area. Hopefully he'll come by one of our stands before shotgun/rifle opens because when that does, the neighbors will be out with all their friends, pushing the woods and shooting at running deer.

I got home from classes yesterday a little after 4pm. I felt like it was going to be a good night, the breeze was light and blowing the right direction for my stand, and it was cool. I get dressed, grab my stuff and out I got. I probably got to my stand around 4:45pm. I didn't have a watch but probably around 5:30pm, I stood up, pulled my bow back because I was bored, turned to sit back down and I see the neck and head of a deer through the trees just past my 30 yard marker behind me! I'm thinking the deer saw me but it puts its head down and is eating acorns. Well I stand there with my bow for probably 10-15 minutes as this deer slowly moved closer but was behnd some pines, eating acorns(I could hear the acorns crack as it ate them ) Finally it starts moving out into an opening, towards a 20 yard marker. I couldn't tell if it was a small doe or button buck, but either way I was taking it because I believe any deer that comes in is a blessing from the Lord. The deer is about 15-20 yards away and stops. I pull my bow back and settle my sight behind the shoulder. I release and see the arrow hit and the deer falls forward then takes off. I realize then the shot was too far forward, I didn't compensate for the deer quartering away from me. I hear the deer stop and can here it breathing hard, which is when I think maybe I hit it in the neck because of it being far forward. I call home on the radio. Wait for probably 15-20 minutes, when I heard a crash, then climb down to go look at my arrow. It has blood up to the vanes and I immediately find blood on the leaves on the ground. I wait about another 10 minutes then start trailing. The blood is bright ready and frothy and was getting really heavy. I find several spots where it stops and there is a ton of blood! I'm praying the entire time also Well I follow the trail under some pines then in some thick bruch I see the white belly of a deer, it is down for good! WOOHOO! It's a button buck, and the arrow did hit it in the neck, but it will be a tasty one at that! I call Andy who comes from home to come help me and after we got it home, it took all of about 45 minutes to clean and skin it and hang it in the root cellar. I would say the deer ran maybe about 80-90 yards if that. I've got photos I'll post soon. And I'm glad that I realized that I need to remember to compensate when a deer is quartering away, a good lesson to learn. By the way I started bow hunting 5 years ago this fall and this makes it my 5th bow deer from the same stand!

So next weekend, October 29 -30, I was going to help drive for the backpacking class here. They are going on an overnight trip down to PA Well a little before and then after the Adirondack trip have been trying to decide whether I could really go or not. I kind of wanted to go, but my heart just hasn't been in it. Besides being hunting season, I have papers due right after the trip, and with the knee injury from the Adirondacks, and thek nee injury from soccer, I am sore after something like hiking. So I prayed about it and thought I would do it, to help the professor, but I still wasn't convinced. I talked to my mom and she said just email the professor and explain you can't do it. Well I just got over to campus this morning and I park the car and start walking and low and behold i hear my name called and it is the professor of the class! Well I told her I didn't think I could do it because of homework, and she had heard about my knee injury and was really understanding and told me if I decided last minute I could still come, that was fine. One of the guys in the class can drive I guess. Anyway I'm glad it wasn't an inconvenience but there is still the small part in me that says I should go because I don't get many chances to backpack with people from Houghton, but then I've got work, and injuries to heal(not too mention hunting season, lol) What do you all think? Did I make a good decision? I just feel bad because the professor is so nice and I usually always stick to my commitments, I hate to break any....

Here is my first set of photos from the backpacking trip I went on from last Wednesday through Sunday. This first one is a view of some peaks from Marcy Dam. I'm in the middle in this photo and the other girls also go to my college. This is a top Indian Falls which is about half way up Mt. Marcy. This is another view of peaks from Indian Falls. More photos to come...I hope they show up clear for everyone. The computer at home shows the pictures kind of fuzzy. Enjoy!

Well I haven't been on here alot lately because I'm crammed with several papers due in the next week, a test and quizes to study for, and when I'm not doing homework or playing intramurals, I'm trying to hunt deer. Haven't had any deer withint range yet but had a Northern Harrier Hawk land about 6 feet above me in my stand tree. Oh yeah and I'm posting some of my Adirondack photos in the photography forum so keep your eyes checking in there. Saturday is the beginning of fall turkey season so I will be starting my attempt to break a 2 year turkeyless streak. Good luck to everyone hunting!!!

Well I got back tonight, around 5pm, from the High Peaks in the Adirondacks. It was lots of fun despite 4 days of cold rain and a guy with ADD who never shut up,lol. We had a total of 12 people go, had to split into 2 groups and stay in 2 separate lean to's due to a size limit.I climbed 3 peaks: Mt. Colden, Phelps, and Marcy. Of course the trails were almost always boulders and with all the rain, was like walking in a creek. Cold, wet boots are really nasty, lol! Oh, and I managed to hurt my knee because hiking from Mt. Marcy back to our len-to was extremely painful but I'm ok right now, my calves just really hurt so I kind of waddle around, lol. I've got some good PHOTOS so keep an eye in the photography room. It is back to classes tomorrow but I'll probably head to my stand early evening for the first bow hunt of the year. While I was gone, Andy got a 3 point buck on the opener. It has a huge body but a small rack, go figure, but I'd say poor nutrition gives our older bucks small raks. I hope everyone had a good weekend! Talk to you all later!

Re: When and/or where do you field dress? I usually field drees mine near wear it last fell. I'll drag it up onto some type of slope or log so the blood can drain out. The gut piles don't seem to bother the deer, and I think foxes and coyotes here clean it up pretty quick.
