    Back from Texas

View from the deer stand. Notice the well worn game trail. Proof there are some big porkers around. Jaw set from a big pig that had died out in the bush.

The Oryx will be pedestal mounted. The whitetail will be a european mount. I'm considering either beading or painting the skull later.

    Back from Texas

I went to Texas this year with the intention of only going after a free range Hill deer and some pigs with my bow. I was hunting with Action Outdoors Adventures. To make a long story short. After 3 hunts and 12 hours of sitting hunt number 4 was my time. 25yard shot. He went 20 yards after a double lung hit. 125gr Slicktrick Standard. This finished things up for me a couple days early. I enjoyed that hunt so much I wanted to go and try for another one. The owner of Action Outdoors asked me if I still wanted an Oryx. I told him I did. He knew of a ranch with a permit I could hunt. I forgot all about hunting pigs to get this Oryx. Two days and eight hours of waiting and I finally got the Oryx. Was it worth it? Oh yes it most definitely was!!! First shot was further back than I would like. I took a 60 yard follow up shot and closed the deal. The animal went another 60 yards but no further. Slicktrick 125gr standards strike again.
  4. I hope I have something to show too_ Thing is about hunting, is ultimately success is in God's hands. Getting to go is a blessing I'm thankful for.
  5. Leaving in a few days to meet up with some old friends in Texas. Plan on hunting the whole time. I'm really looking forward to this. I haven't seen these folks in a long time. I also have not had a place to hunt this season in South Carolina. Last year was a bust. Lord willing my luck will change.
  6. With the resistance being that close to being equal, it's a pretty good bet the elements are not to blame. I think you are on the right track believing you have a bad thermostat.
  7. Really really nice knife!
  8. You're probably gonna have to bite the bullet and get a bigger door. I've got one my 80lb boxer used to use but we took it out after he passed away. I'd sell it cheap but I don't know how much shipping would be.
  9. Two parts rock salt and one part FERTILIZER grade Dicalcium Phosphate. The feed grade Dical is not good for deer, it gives them indigestion. If you use the feed grade stuff they will typically avoid it after they hit it once.
  10. Here's the Medalist stock for the Browning A-bolt II. I have bought two of these stocks from these guys and have been very pleased. I also could not find a better price. Choose from their "In Stock" itemized list and you will get it quick! Bell & Carlson Medalist
  11. The Bell and Carlson Medalist stock made the most significant accuracy improvement of all the changes I've made to the rifle. The Medalist stocks are carbon fiber with a precision machined aluminum bedding block inside. "Out of the box" the gun shot 1-1.25MOA with the same ammo.
  12. I've done some work to my 30-06 Tikka T3. This is how it shoots factory Hornady Light Mag (Superformance) ammo now. Here's the gun. Hinterland bolt handle and shroud, Bell and Carlson Medalist stock, Sako Optilock rings and a Meopta Meostar scope. I also lightened up the trigger pull. I'm keeping this gun!
  13. Ditto on the at least 1 inch past the rest at full draw. Strings stretch, hard stops on cams get loose and move... An arrow that's almost too short is extremely dangerous. If you draw it off the rest, the point will go right into your grip hand with no safe way to let down. You can shoot arrows that are much longer safely as long as they are spined stiffly enough to handle to load. The longer the arrow the stiffer it needs to be.

  15. I don't need a new friction call but I did get to try one of those at a store. It's one a good one for sure. Don't think you can go wrong with it.

I've found the Nockturnals to be much more reliable for me.
  18. This is very true. Not all slate calls are equal. There are quite a few out there you can call turkeys with that really aren't great calls. If you can kee kee on the slate in the center of it's sweet spot that's an outstanding slate. Doesn't mean if you can't, you can't call in a bird with it but if you can kee kee in the sweet spot it's a really good slate that will serve you well.
  19. I only hunted Rio's once. I didn't call in one I wanted to shoot but called in several jakes. One thing I noticed is you have much more wind to deal with in Texas and that's a factor. In general, box calls are capable of producing much more volume than a slate. This is crucial on windy days. Boat paddle calls are typically the loudest box calls. Some slate calls can produce enough volume but the majority of them aren't loud enough for windy days. Perfection's Screaming Demon II is loud enough but it is also expensive.
  20. Eat pickled eggs, boiled cabbage and beans. Spray your underwear down thoroughly with the scent suppressant of your choice. Go to the movies and see if anyone notices. I honestly can't say that I'm a believer in either one. They may work somewhat for short periods of time but I really don't buy the "Forget the wind" hype.
  21. Went to the Lieutenant Dan Band fundraiser concert for wounded veterans last night. Absolutely outstanding show! There was an outpouring of support for our troops last night. If they are doing a gig near you. Definitely plan on going, you won't be disappointed. Here's the local paper write up. Actor Sinise, thousands rally for injured vets - Beaufort News - IslandPacket.com
  22. Check out this one. And listen to the audio sample. Our Products - Friction Calls - Slate/Glass Call (Powered by CubeCart) My go to slate is the Perfection Screaming Demon II. It's got incredible volume for a slate and really does the trick on windy days. Perfection also makes a decent instructional DVD for beginners.
  23. Then it's a Winchoke and NOT compatible with the new Brownings or Winchesters.
  24. If that's Invector Plus it will also fit Browning Shotguns with Invector Plus systems.
  25. I wouldn't let archerytalk bow bashing scare me too much. They bash everybody. They Destroyer is one of the very best bows Bowtech ever made. I've shot one and like it very much. A good friend of mine has one in Africa and it has been a very good bow for him.
