  1. In the thick woods I hunt here in NY I have bumped birds on roost 2x and killed them a bit later. My latest knowledge of this from hunting in Texas this last weekend for Rios is... if there is little cover, and from their high vantage points of roost they can see and hear something spooky. I am inclined to think they spook a bit more in open country as opposed to thicker woods were a disturbance is a sound and not a visual and a sound to confirm their fears. They can't smell, so out of hear/see/smell senses for game, they can't smell( if they did we'd never kill 'em); 2 of 2 is enough for them to hike it on out of there for a while.
  2. My son and I just got back from a 4 day trip to Texas for Rios. Here is the link to the story. http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70996
  3. Here is the story guys. What a blast! http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70996
  4. My son Joe and I just got back from The Lone Star state for 4 days hunting on 3 ranchs. The SW hill country, Kerrville and the Trans Pecos area, Iraan; a 40,000 acre ranch! See map pic. This was a lease that we had permission to hunt on. So very different than the hardwoods I hunt here back home. Enjoying every minute, even the smell of the air. I saw real live oil wells too:p. For a Yankee like myself I was lovin' it! I thought about the movie City Slickers:D We were chasing Rios, Javelina and free ranging Axis was a possibility also. What a time we had with a great friend who showed us awesome hospitality. We stopped off at the San Antonio Bass Pro shop after leaving the airport and was amazed at that store. We also stopped at the Texas Exotics Museum. Saw some incredible mounts there see pics. We also stopped at our friends Taxidermist buddy, Gary Rhodes Taxidermy in Kerrville. Boy does he do some nice work. See pics. My buddy has a 16 acre high fence property that he is stocking with animals. He just got a nice Tatonka female a few weeks ago and will have black buck and axis soon too. See pic. In between hunting Joe and I found many arrowheads, javelina, whitetail, muley skulls, antler sheds and meteorite rocks from showers they have there often. I felt a sense of hunting in the right place finding all these obsidian arrow heads. One rack we found was a 5pt muley's whose rear leg got caught on a fence line. Dead battery in digital camera prevented pics, we got pics later at camp of the head. We collected so many sheds and skulls I had to ship them back home. The minimum for a muley on this ranch in Iraan was 24" so you can imagine how big some of the sheds are that are found there we did OK. To see such barren land one would think there would be little life. But that desert was crawling with it. The deer, rabbits, turkey, fox, snakes, vultures, scorpions OHH MY! We used a Polaris ranger to get around the ranch and it took like 30-40 minutes to get close to some spots to hunt. There is a lot of land to cover. I think a quiet Badboy buggie would have been a stealthier approach, but with the amount of ground to cover the battery might go dead. Rios were the primary reason for our Texas trip. Joe hunted Axis in Kerrville Friday afternoon and did not see any. Saturday and Sunday we hunted Rios. I saw nothing Saturday but does and Joe called in a lone hen. We kicked up many birds driving around but could not close the deal I did get a shot off, I missed:( at a trotting fox that ran across our path as we were driving down the road. Being from NY, it was a funny feeling to be able to have loaded firearms in the vehicle during hunting season. That miss did cost me a shirt tail piece:D. Sunday Joe and hunted together and again did not see any birds until the afternoon. We sat at a watering trough and at least a dozen or so doe come in to water. The muleys were much much larger than the whitetails and did not interact at the hole. We were sitting in a cedar ground blind and were well concealed with our new Realtree HD Green camo:D. Then the turkeys came... about 25 hens. All hens:( every stinking one of 'em:mad:. They gave us a good show as did the deer and we shot some video too. The birds were roosting on the windmills and whatever trees were available. We did not harvest any birds, but spent some great times with a friend down there and again I got to hunt with one of my sons. I found Texas to be full of pride and friendly people. Lone Star flags flying everywhere. We cannot wait to get back down there and have another go at it. Maybe even retire there.
  5. Twas the night before Texas... and all through our home we are packing our bags... for The Lone Star State we will roam. Rios and Axis and maybe Javelina too. You just never know what the Hill country could bring you. We have to tip toe through the sand, for there rattle snakes are everywhere man! I will end this poem... I ran out of ryhme, that will happen every time:p I get silly I tell ya... silly... sometimes:p. Joe and I are off tomorrow morning! We picked up some new Realtree HD green and we are ready. Thanks for all the tips guys! Rhino and Texan til especially. Fill ya in when we get back.
  6. Our season in NY is the month of May only, until 12 noon. Bearded birds only, you get 2 tags for spring and 2 tags for fall turkey. In the fall( Oct 1 - Nov 17th or so.) we can hunt them all day, either sex; 2 tags.
  7. Snake... The 2nd or 3rd weekend in May might be open, depending on how my sons do. Stay in touch.
  8. That is great. Congrats to her and to the proud Poppa too;).
  9. Yeah...It was Spitzer who was investigating HIM! My My My, how the worm turns.
  10. Well, if we want to hunt anything it has to be before the end of March. The only thing open is crow and coyote now. May starts spring turkey, then nothing til October to hunt. We could just get together to BBQ, ride and shoot our bows/guns. 2 week notice of most weekends is fine by me.
  11. I am sure glad I spent the $ on a pair of snake boots! Cheaper to go for boots than hospital co pays huh? They can leap to strike 1/2 their body length! Yowsah! I will be walking the SW hill country on Texas' Rio opener march 15th. Scary...
  12. Another friend of Hillary:rolleyes: At least he wasn't toe tapping in the bathroom:D. Phew. It couldv'e been worse for us here in NY. He could have admitted to being Jim McGreavy's lover. You know...the former Gov of NJ who had to step down for being...a...a...how shall I say...a little light in the pants:D That means the NEW Governor will appoint all NEW Commissioners...That means a NEW DEC Commissioner. Maybe goodbye to HSUS/PeTa award winning Grannis:)
  13. Yeah, check out NY's gobblers. We have plenty here. Where are you in NJ? North or south Jersey?
  14. That sounds like a plan, bring your four wheelers too:) We live full time here in Rockland county 3R and have another house in Sullivan county 3H. We( my 3 sons and I) are up to the house almost every weekend.
  15. Thanks guys. The wife usually gives me crap about putting stuff up in the house. It is usually heads and horns; and til this day she has always won:(. But I put my foot down this time and told her this was going up in the Family room. She said..." OK, no problem, thats a nice picture" and walked away. She took the fight right out of me. How do they always know what to say:confused: . I think she knows me all too well? I see this print becoming a heirloom.
  16. Hmmm...a while ago. 17 years worth. This might be on a test my wife gives... Lemme see.... I remember!!! "This I swear is True" by the Skyliners. We grew up on Doo wop and Led Zep...some combo huh?
  17. I went to a Friends of the NRA dinner here in my county last night. As always it was a good time. If you remember, last year; they presented my son Joe with a grant, to attend a NYS DEC Camp in the Adirondacks for a week of animal biology. He had a blast and learned a lot. So, not only is the event a exercise in supporting the 2nd amendment, they also got to send another pair of youngsters off to camp this June and raise funds for the NRA. There were silent and live auctions all night with raffle buckets too for various prizes. Over 12 guns were given away tonight. One lucky person was the ONLY bidder on a Weatherby Orion D'Italia .12ga O/U and stole it for $1000. This gun is 2 g's and better. I didn't win any guns BUT...I did win a silent auction of a Framed picture of Gen. Washington on horseback approaching cheering troops holding muskets , trotting over a tattered British Flag. Here it is. The title of it is "Dawn of a nation" I love the smirk on GW's face. Very Cool It kind of gives me goosebumps;)
  18. No problem. Maybe down the road in May we might be able to meet up at our land in the 3H region of NY, by Monticello,NY Good Luck! BTW, squirrelhunter91 is my son Joe. He is on our team and is a NASTY turkey caller. I have a feeling this team will more than OK this year;)

  21. Our land/hunting cabin is not far from Honesdale ,PA. in Sullivan county ,NY There are some reservoir/water shed areas that have opened up to the public for hunting. Take a look at those. http://home2.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/watershed_protection/html/wsrecreation.html If you feel like going father south in NY, take a look at Sterling Forest http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=81 Permits for both are free.
  22. I have been hunting ONLY private land since the 80's in NY's region 3. How far in southern NY are you looking? Any particular region? I might have a few spots depending on where you are looking.
  23. You can't go wrong with the Brownings. I have 2 Marlin 336's both 30/30, one Winchester 94 Trapper .44mag and the apple of my safe. My 1923 mfg. Savage99 in .300 Savage. Lever guns warm my heart. You can do better with the caliber range choices in the Brownings. If you are lucky you might be able to find a Sako FinnWolf. Another great gun. Good Luck!
