Happy Turkey Day everyone! Lets keep in our hearts and prayers those soldiers who cannot be with their loved ones this holiday and are protecting OUR freedom so that we can be with ours. God Bless America and our soldiers.

I'm glad things worked out, Phew!... But if that is not a advertisement for firearm/dog ownership I don't know what is... That sicko is gonna try that again hope they put him away.

Well team...opening day came and went. I shot a doe last Sunday morning and did not see any shooter bucks. There is a antler restriction of 3 on one side in the area I hunt. It makes it a tough hunt:( But...I filled my doe tag:) In my usual spot...in my food plot:D . 10 deer have met my freezer from that stand. Its a keeper. I came home for Turkey and to see my wonderful wife and kids:D get clean clothes, a few of my sons and back up to camp! How is everyone else doing? Have a Happy Thanksgiving all, say a prayer for and keep in mind the soldiers of Our Great Country who can't be in their tree stands hunting or with their families this holiday. -
Congrats....Memories forever.

I have a few recurves and one long bow. The one I shoot the most is a Vintage Ben Pearson Javelina 66" 45# 28"draw. I just finished a fletch job on some Gold Tip Traditional 35/55 shafts. I also picked up a cool quiver on E Bay to match the bow. I get messed up going from the Mathews to the stick n string. I'm gonna have to choose soon.

Congrats! Whenever you fool the wild canine mind you did good!

To all who will be going out with the firearm this Saturday...Good Luck Have fun and hunt safe! I will be in NY's 3H region, there is a 3 on one side rule there for bucks. NYS-DEC sent me a highly coveted 3H DMP tag. I will be looking to fill it ASAP. A good cold front is on its way. That'll get 'em moving.

Hmmm is that a way I would hunt...definitely not. Is he legal? I don't know your states rules. In NY if you get out of the vehicle, with a already unloaded weapon, unless you have a pistol permit, load it,step off the road and shoot. You are legal. I know someone who took a nice buck that way a few years ago. He didn't need it to eat, it was just braggin' rights. The guy who is shootin to eat...as long as he is legal, may be unethical, but legal. Is he trespassing to get the deer he shoots? Thats a key factor.

When I hunt the suburbs...the gut pile comes with me. No evidence. When I am in a more remote hunting area. The gut pile stays where it the deer layed. I might drag it to a better spot to gut it, so if a yote comes by it will be in a shooting lane for future hunts. I have seen other deer sniff gut piles and walk around them. Not alarming them at all.

Hey Ryan... I just went thought a whole bunch of .20ga slug shooting with my son. If your barrel is a smoothbore, then you will need forster type(rifled slugs). If your barrel is rifled then the Sabots are the way to go unless they are the type that can be used in both smooth and rifled barrels. My sons rifled barreled Mossberg shot the 3"Brenneke slugs the best. My smooth bore Mossberg .12ga shot the rifled slug Remington Sluggers best. 2nd the Federal Power Shock. All 2 3/4". For the best shotgun accuracy I would recommend a rifled barrel. If the loads you use are cheap and they shoot good...Lucky you!

I've been out 2 more times and the hunting has been slooow:(. Our gun season starts on this saturday. I have a rare doe tag that DEC sent me last week, that I was 1st denied for; that I will fill if one steps out. What has everyone else been up to? -
Hand made equipment is the most satisfying to use. Nice job.

Cute has NOTHING to do with how they taste and sound QDM decisions for the particular property. If I had to hunt with the concern of that animals deserve a chance at life...well I might as quit hunting. Your standards are not everyone elses. Many in the USA shoot whatever is legal and there is no harm or shame in being a successful hunter regardless of harvest. All participating in this thread, if I may...are well seasoned hunters who who have 10-20 maybe more years under their belt with various weapons. We do not simply wish just to shoot any various deer anymore. We are looking to make sound management decisions for the properties we hunt, if we have that luxury, some hunt for meat and thats fine too. Some have limited time in the woods and have to make the most out of what steps out. So much more deer biology info is available to us than our Dads and Gramps could ever dream of. This is a GREAT thread and I wish a PRO could come on and put their 2cents in. Awesome brainfood here.

Tried Winchester's 777 209 Primers?
Adjam5 replied to PotashRLS's topic in Bluelk's Muzzleloader Room
I used the 777 seven primers in both my smokepoles, and had experienced the same as you...dirty. I have found out that both of my ML's are finicky. One likes ONLY 90grs. pyrodex RS with standard 209 primers. That is my T/C ThunderHawk, a PITA to clean. My CVA Wolf loves the 777 stuff, primers and pellets. Shockeys Gold:(...had inconsistant velocities and it too was not as clean as I expected it to be. If the gun shoots it good, I'd shoot it. Regardless of cleaning. Sure, easy clean up is a positive. But as long as it is not corrosive. Let 'er rip! -
2 way radios , hand held VHF or hand held CB??
Adjam5 replied to total disaster's topic in Hunting Equipment
Most of the radios out there are FRS(family Radio signal) type radios. Many have radios that work on those frequencies, thats why you have so much bleed over. Same type of radios that family's take to amusement parks. The radios we use at our deer camp are Motorola Spirits. They are a little bigger than an index card and about an inch thick. These are real deal walkie talkies. Just like the ones that we use on our construction sites. Matter of fact I got them from work. They were upgrading and I snatched these up with chargers for a song. That batteries last incredibly long too. NO INTERFERENCE at all. You need to be careful though...some radios need a FCC license to transmit legally. -
At the QDMA seminar I went to, what was talked about was... The 80lb mark. That is the trigger weight for doe fawns to become mature enough for breeding. If they do not attain that weight, they will not breed and most likely will have a hard time during the winter months, unless they live in a area that has supplemental feeding. The lead doe is usually the matriarch and teaches the others. It was recommended to shoot the smaller ones, but it comes down to personal preference and what ever is legal. I have shot a button a buck in the past, but it was a mistake. I thought it was a doe:confused: at 60 yards. It had 1 inch nubbers I couldn't see with the scope. Thats why antlerless in NY is considered, antlers less than 3".

Hang in there Buckee...the seeds I hear are the way to go... the least invasive. Hope the flow problem gets back to normal soon.

Maybe you heard this before... Two deer hunters were standing on a ridge near a highway in Montana on the opening day of deer season. They both spotted a large trophy class buck meandering towards them. As the one hunter raised his gun to shoot, a funeral procession came slowly by. The hunter lowered his gun, took off his hat and stood with his head bowed until the procession was past. Of course by then, the deer was gone. The other hunter exclaimed "Wow! That was the most sportsmanlike act I've ever seen! You allowed this trophy buck to escape while showing such compassion and kindness toward someone's dearly departed. You are a great humanitarian and a shining example to sportsmen throughout the world!" The first hunter nodded and said, "Well.... we were married for 42 years."

I use a Schrade Old Timer with a gut hook for 22 years. I have grown quite fond of the Cold Steel products as of late. Their pro hunter is a awesome knife.
