OK...we took the gun out to sight it in. The Brennekes 3" .20ga shot the best. They were relatively cheap $7.99/5 compared to Hornadys SST slug @$13/5. Which shot 2nd best. What was really disappointing was. The barrel and scope came as a package deal and was lazer bore sighted from the factory. Put the barrel on the gun, checked everything. Joe starts shooting. He is all over the place. We are scratching our heads. Upon closer inspection of the barrel and scope. The scope rings were only hand tightened and the scope was dancing with each shot. Regardless of adjustment. I got a hold of some hex keys and tightened the scope mounts and rings up. Then we were OK. I know... I know. Shame on me for not checking the mounts out before we started shooting. But I took for granted that since it was bore sighted at the factory it was good to go. We went though 5 rounds before we knew something had to be up. I called Mossberg about this and am awaiting a call back. I better not hold my breath. The gun shot well and with the porting...recoil was almost non existent.

Happy Birthday and may you have many more...

I was just watching a show called Maximum Archery by Andy Ross of Ross Bow fame. He gets to the place to get his horse, to ride 6 hours to base camp, and his horses name was Break Up...(you know..that OTHER camo:D). Andy Ross went into a whole thing on how Realtree is the ONLY camo for him and how he is a big supporter of Realtree. He would not ride a horse named Break Up. He had the Horse named Hardwoods and all was good after that. Funny how brand loyalty always gets tossed in there. Some hardcore Realtree people out there. My son shoots a Ross 331 and it is a real nice quiet bow.

Thanks for sharing in the humor of it all. I'm still laughing at what happened:p. What really got me was the bear poop on the way in and the leaf racket was constant. Like something big walking by. I was loving it. I am cherishing that moment and have not telling that story. Weird though...I have shot bucks and turkeys before, but NEVER had that feeling that day. GGGGGREAT!

Welcome to Realtree Sarah. I have seen this womans camo clothes company advertised in the past. Thought it might be of some help for you. http://www.foxyhuntress.com/

Well it happened to me. I was gasping for air not knowing what was below me making such a racket. My son Joe and I were up at our hunting camp this weekend in Sullivan county,NY. We got on stand for 2:30 saturday. Joe was about 100 yards to my right. I was in a stand where I have planted a food plot, have a bunch of apple trees, and have always seen animal sign whenever that spot is visited. So I'm all hunkered on my stool in my stand, watchin' a spike that wandered in and was eating apples. He was very cautious. I could have shot him a million times, BUT...we are in a 3 on one side area in 3H, and that is a no no. I 'm watchin' the spike and he locks on something behind me. All of a sudden I hear leaves thrashing like SASQUATCH is walking by....right under me! Now I have this stand wrapped with spray painted burlap( I call it daddyflauge:D), and I cannot see below me. I am in a permanent stand built in a cherry tree about 12' up. My heart starts poundin' and I tried to reach for my bow. My hand is shakin' like a dog squattin' over a briar patch. I have no idea what is making such a racket. All I have in my mind is the giant fresh pile of bear poo I passed in my food plot on the way in. I'm shakin'...afraid to look over the burlap...I finally grab my bow, get the strap over my wrist, close my eyes..deep breath. Waiting for the leaf noises to get in front of me...I attach my release...deep breath and close and open my eyes. Never felt this way before... Finally SASQUATCH steps out....A DANG flock of turkeys... They start scratching in the plot and fighting over fallen apples. MAN! I have NEVER been soo excited and frozen at the same time. I couldn't breathe I have never had buck fever, with the bow or gun. But this time I was breathless! One of the coolest feelings I have ever felt. Gasping...not to move or consume oxygen. I truly felt that bear was under me. Soo....I get ready to draw on a hen that was about 15 yards away... PUTT PUTT PUTT...Heads go up and they take off out of there. I got busted drawing by one of the birds( too many eyes) and the spike was still there too...watchin' me. That buck is now educated, he gave the white flag before he took off staring right at me Great hunt! No doubt...That heart pounding experience you cannot buy. We also dropped of my son Joe's buck at the Taxidermist. He said around March it will be ready. We will see. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Have you applied for the Water shed permits to allow you to hunt the NYC water shed reservoir properties? Click or cut and paste. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/watershed_protection/html/wsrecreation.html It is a free permit and is good for 5 years. There a few nice reservoirs around where you are to hunt on. Good Luck! -
Alright...way to go! Great buck! That scar will be like a tattoo:D Congrats!

Nice going Tim...making NY PROUD! Congrats!

Nice Buck Ambuscher...Well done! MY son and I were out this weekend in The Catskills of New York. We are in a 3 on one side area for the bucks and the doe tags are given out VERY sparingly. I saw a spike and about 20 turkeys. One busted me, sent out the PUTT alarm as I was drawing on them, and that was that, they were gone:(. Cool hunt none the less. Seen nothing else this weekend. We also dropped of my sons buck at the Taxidermist. www.nevestaxidermy.com While we were there, the taxidermist got a few pics sent to him on his cell phone from his son, who is hunting in Pike county, Ill as we speak. He knocked down a 180" (green) buck. We saw the pics on the cell phone...Ohhh! one day. He is doing a full body mount. Cool. I'll post the when Joe gets his mount back. -
Here is another taxidermist that is in southern NY. Bethel,NY I will be using him to have my sons 1st buck mounted. www.nevestaxidermy.com It is a father and son operation that is a class act. We spent some time( like 1 1/2 hours) in his showroom and closely looked at all the mounts. I'm talkin' mounts from ALL OVER the world. Some impressive Roe buck and Chinese water bucks( they have fangs!), anyway...My son and I were impressed by the quality of the work. He will be getting the cape tomorrow. Either myself or my son Joe will post the finished product when we get it back.

Whatever you do don't use bleach on the skull. It is an acid and it will deteriorate the bone. If you wish to whiten the skull after the boiling and such. Use hair dressers peroxide, white if you can get it. Use gloves and use caution, this stuff can burn too. Make a paste with the washing soda and peroxide, brush it on and let it dry. Then wash it off after letting it sit a day or too. WALAA! Bone white bone.

This is BIG news for gun hunters on opening day of deer season. Good Luck New York! For Release: Wednesday, October 31, 2007 DEC Announces Expanded Hunting Season in the Catskill Bear Hunting Region Regular Bear Season in the Catskills Begins on Nov. 17 The state has adopted new regulations that change the start of this fall's regular bear season in the Catskill Mountain region to Saturday, Nov. 17 -- the same day as the start of the regular deer season in that area and two days earlier than bear hunting seasons in the past -- New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis announced today. The date change is intended to increase bear harvest in the Catskills to limit bear population growth and range expansion. "The bear population in southeastern New York has grown in recent years, particularly in the southern and central Catskills," Grannis said. "Hunting is an important component of a comprehensive bear management program. The additional harvest anticipated in the Catskill range, in combination with education and preventative measures, is expected to bring the number and magnitude of negative impacts in better balance with human interests." The expanded hunting season applies to the specific wildlife management units that define the Catskill bear hunting area (These maps are available at www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7857.html ). DEC had proposed the change in September; it has now been adopted. This is the second time in three years that DEC has extended the bear hunting season in the Catskills and surrounding areas in an effort to stabilize the population. The change does not affect the start of the regular bear hunting season in New York's two other primary bear hunting areas: Allegany (Nov. 24) and Adirondacks (Oct. 20). Managing the black bear population in the Catskills has been a longtime focus of DEC. In 2006, hunters took almost 800 bears statewide, including 365 bears from the Catskill range. Since the bowhunting season began Oct. 13, more than 80 bears have been taken in the Catskill bear hunting area. The commissioner reminded hunters that they must report the taking of a black bear to DEC. "Not only is the reporting of a bear by a hunter required by the Department's regulations, it is a vital component of our black bear management program," Grannis said. Successful bear hunters must report the taking of a black bear within 48 hours and may do so by calling 1-866-GAMERPT (1-866-426-3778). "The Department's wildlife biologists will examine each bear taken by hunters in the Catskills to collect important biological information to help with the on-going bear monitoring program," the commissioner said. A recent article in the New York State Conservationist (October 2007) underscored the significant expansion of black bear population (now estimated at 6,000 to 7,000) and range in the state over the last 12 years and included information on how people can minimize the chances of a negative encounter with a bear. DEC has received a growing number of reports of bears causing damage to property. Bear-human conflicts often occur when people provide food to bears, either intentionally or accidentally. Bears become conditioned and will return to areas where they previously found food. As noted in the article, "In those suburban areas that are close to bear habitat, the path of least resistance for a bear to food is often a bird feeder, garbage can or an outdoor pet food dish." Keeping garbage contained, cleaning up cooking areas, removing bird feeders during spring and summer, and being careful not to leave food outdoors are important steps that help avoid most problem bear situations. Picked up a package of the Montec G5's and I scoured the package to see where they are made. I knew they were a US company, but the product gave no indication of broad head origination. I received this response back and I'd thought I'd share it . Thank you very much for your email. All G5 broadheads are 100% designed and assembled right here in Memphis, Michigan. We add more than 70% of the value of the manufacturing process here in our facility or within local Michigan vendors. G5 Outdoors works with multiple global vendors to source the best materials for it's products. For example, we use Swiss Steel for the Striker blades because that particular alloy is the best in the world and is only found in Switzerland . We have those same blades sharpened at the Lutz facility in Germany because their process is unmatched worldwide. Due to the fact that we use so many different vendors, some of which are not domestic, we don't feel comfortable stating that our products are 100% made in the USA although we maintain 70% of the value of our product is made in the United States. Please let us know if you have any questions. Sincerely, Maggie Gerlich G5 Outdoors 810-392-8431 ext. 135 www.g5outdoors.com Name: Address: City: State: Zip: Email: Comments: I have just purchased a package of your Montec 100gr heads. I have looked over the package very closely, and I do not see where your product is manufactured. Please advise as to where your products are made. Thank you for your time.

I was out of my parents home at 20 in my 1st apartment. Got into the electrical apprenticeship at 20, married at 26(after 5 years dating). 1st son born when I was 27, 2nd son at 29 and my 3rd and last son at 32. I'm 43 now. Bought my 1st home when I was 30, bought my 2nd home when I was 38. Living someplace affordable is the the key to being able to save to realize your dream of owning a home. It took me 5 years to save 30K to have 20% for a down payment. I got OUT and far as I could afford from NYC:D. Since then I have never looked back. The 1st 2 or 3 years are the toughest ones for the finances to settle (escrow ect.). Buying a home is a GREAT investment and I wish you all the luck in the world in achieving that goal.

Been out a few more times, and seen nothing to shoot. My son and I have been upstate at our land to try and get a shot at the bear that has been spotted locally. No luck. Last night brought in a killing frost,27degrees. The coldest it has gotten all year. That ought to get the bucks movin' down here. I also just was mailed another doe tag for my area from NYSDEC. I was turned down when I requested it and received a preference point for next year. The letter they sent said not enough people applied for that unit so there are extras. I'll take it. This tag will be filled for the venison donation program. I had to buy another freezer to keep the 2 deer my son shot this year. With 2 of us collecting venison, space gets tight in the freezer. Hope everyone got to get out a bit and enjoy outside this weekend. Go Team APH!!! -
Nice pic...Congrats!

SWeet Buck...Love all that nubbly stuff on the bases. Congrats!
