You might have read Joes version under the "Canterlever Tom" title. This is mine. Last Saturday my oldest son(I have 3) and I were at it again... out chasing birds in NY's Sullivan county. From a fathers perspective...I could not have been made anymore proud, from a hunting partners perspective, I couldn't have been more happier. The set up was perfect and my sons masterful calling help create one of the most memorable moments in the field together. Joe was brought up in the outdoors and has shown me how fast he learns and gets better at it too. Joe was working 2 toms that were coming in from the front of us and we were suprised from behind by a Tom that came in silent but could not resist Joes love calls. He let loose with a gobble and gave himself away not 50 yards behind us. Joe wanted me to take him, he felt he had no shot, and the Tom was liking the Purdy custom slate call. I rolled to my right on my belly and got ready. The Tom walked down the trail I was 5 feet off of. He saw the dekes, relaxed his strut, to get under some brush. That gave me a op to move my gun and get a better sight path with less obstructions. I did. He was 5' away and I let him have it. I was lucky to have hit him at all with the shot not getting a chance to spread. I must have sent a golfball sized pattern at that bird. He went down and we were one happy father and son. It was 20lbs, 8 3/4"beard and 3/4" spurs. I have 2 more youngers sons that I can't wit to do the same thing with! The Lord has truly blessed me.

REAL nice bird and congrats! Great choice of backdrops for pics of a successful hunt. Easterns are hard earned birds.

This is THE most memorable hunt I have ever been on with Joe. As a young boy, maybe 7; he sat on my lap while I shot a doe during gun season. He watched me shoot a turkey right after he shot his 1st 3 years ago. This past october bow season he sat in the tree next to me and watched me shoot another doe with the bow. Now last saturday, he called in a really nice Tom that suprised the both of us. My son is becoming quite the caller and hunter and man. I could not have a better hunting partner and I cherish the times we are together. I love ya Joe and you make me proud daily. Ok...I gotta go get a tissue.

Well...we went at it again and all I can say is...NICE TOM DOWN! biggrin.gif Joe was working 2 toms that were closing the distance in front of us. We were in the same spot that Joe took that huge bird last year. They were gobbling their heads off and coming in fast. Joe says" Dad, if they come in on the left I got 'em, If they come in on the right, you got 'em...OK?" Deal. They sounded like they were about 75 yards away and closing when we hear this mature Tom let loose BEHIND US! He was like maybe 20 yards or so behind us up over a ridge. We look at each other, eyes bulging! We had no idea this bird was anywhere near us. I roll over on my belly and get ready, the bird reaches the crest of the hill on the path I am sitting next to. He is at full strut! He sees our hen and jake deke and he locked on. He had to break strut to get around a down tree limb on the path. When he did, he turned his back to me and went behind the tree. That gave me time to swing my gun over to a more clear shooting path. I was using my Mossberg 835, the one I just bought about 3 months ago. I has a 28" bbl. Way too long for a turkey gun, but since Joe took my other turkey gun, I have this one. I was worried I was gonna trip that Tom as he was walking down that path with that 1/2 mile long bbl. Joe putted a bit...the bird raised his head...BAM! at about 5"...YUP...5'! I was lucky to hit that bird at all being soo close to it. That shot did not even get a chance to spread, maybe a golfball sized pattern to work with at that range. Down the bird went. Joe has turned into quite the turkey caller and he is getting better evey year. Bird weighed 20 lbs, sporta a 8 3/4" beard and has 3/4" spurs.

Ya know for a walnut sized brain...they do OK don't they Nothing to report here. Called in a bunch of hens this weekend., toms stopped talking.
-
Nope...we were not sucessful. I was proud of Joe not shooting at that Tom that came in. He felt it was to far away for his effective range, and as hot as Joe was for a bird, he let this one walk. That bird hopped up a rock ledge that was about 40-45degrees and scaled that rock ridge like a billy goat. Not spooked,he walked away after getting bored, we were waiting for him to come in, but he just skipped calmly up the rocks. Must've been one of the them thar BillyToms:) My boy is maturing as a hunter and a man. I am just as proud as if he would've let the hammer down and we were standing over that bird. You have to know when NOT to shoot and my son has shown me...he knows. My sons and I will be back out there again this weekend chasing birds. Good Luck to all and have a safe hunt!

OK, Joe and I went out for the opener in unit 3J in Highland,NY. We got up at 2:45 and were in the woods by 4:30. I just hate that drive. We were with my friend Bill Purdy of....www.purdyscustomturkeycalls.com and his son William. We happened accross some unexpected hunters, but all was cool. I just wish they knew how to owl hoot...MAN were they terrible. We heard some gobbles off the roost and tried to get close as we could. Bill worked these toms a bit and then they just shut up once they flew down. We sat a bit and nothing. We moved a bit up the ridge and heard a mature bird gobble on its own. We plopped down thinking we had no time for dekes being the bird soo close and all. Bill was getting these 2 toms now... very hot and bothered and worked up to say the least. The spot we dropped down at put us at a disadvantage with a downed tree most likely in the way of our coming birds. The gobbling got louder and closer. I finally saw the bird, 2 1/2 year old with like a 7" beard. He was walking back and forth behind the downed tree and was reluctant to come around with not having a visual of the yelping hen. He moved around to the top of the downed tree and stepped out a bit. He was at what I estimated to be 50-60 yards. Joe decided not to shoot being the bird was out of his effective range, I was proud of him. The tom got bored and then did the strangest thing I have ever seen a turkey do. He walked away, not spooked and climbed a rock ridge hopping and flapping his wings. Hopping and only flapping when he needed to. This ridge was like a 45degree incline too. It was amazing watching him exit like that. He worked that ridge like a goat, so we named him BillyTom smile.gif We worked that mountain untill 12 with no luck the rest of the morning. Joe and I will be at our house in Sullivan this weekend chasing birds up there. Good luck everyone!

Great story and Awesome bird and best of luck with the engagement!
-
Congrats to your son on the bird and you, for having all those great things happen on the same day. Hope you guys have many more.
-
Congrats on the bird Strut! Our strategy is.... just to go to a place that is notirious for holding BIG gobblers . We go every year to the same apple orchard in 3J and the surrounding woods, usually by 8am someone has a tom down. We have a favorite rock that we like to nap on. It gets real hot in the sun and holds the heat. It makes a perfect place to nap;)

The e mail I got back from Walmart when I asked this question about 3 months ago was.... They are stopping selling guns in areas that have poor gun sales. I was told it was a sales strategy based on sale figures....That was alot of BULLDINKY. This is all part of the "Dismantling of the Sportsman" Out and out anti-gun laws get beat back by us. So this is how the anti gun zealots will attack. Just don't forget where Walmart and one of the most famous anti gun couple come from. The same state...Arkansas. Does the word collusion mean anything to you? I smell something.

Welcome to the forums! It might be too early in the game to get the APG dip. But I could be wrong. Check out www.bellandcarlson.com as well as Tarjac. They might also have what you need.

Congrats to your son on the bird! I've been hearing nothing but good stuff about that B mobile decoy. Hmmm...it might be worth the 50-60bucks.

The youth season is just a few days away! Joe is already packed and his camo is ready. Think the boys a bit anxious?

I have 60acres of family hunting land that I manage in NYS's 3H region. Our land borders a 400 acre hunting camp that shoots anything and everything . That changed last year with the implement of antler restrictions( 3 on one side) in the region, so thats over. I had a ONE rule on the land when you hunted deer. NO SPIKES!!! Unless it is your 1st deer and you qualify age wise(16 and under) to harvest a buck under the antler restriction rules of NYS. To get a doe tag in our area, one needs 3 preference points ( when you are turned down for a doe tag you accumulate points, until you have 3, you dont get a doe tag in regular/gun season, you could use your either sex bow tag, but then no buck to bag with the bow. It might take one 3 years to be able to shoot a doe with a rifle or shotgun. I wait until muzzleloading season to take does. Those are either sex tags. The land has about 20 apple trees that were very old, overgrown and I brought them back into health with liming and pruning. There are 2 small food plots on the land, plenty of water. The land is covered with blackberry, blueberry and rasberry bushes. We got some real good bear pics last year, but no one shot it or even saw it. A 12lb. bobcat was taken 2 years ago on our land. We shoot coyotes, racoons, porcupines and skunks whenever we can. They are the real turkey killers( they eat the eggs and wreck nests). We also have a beaver problem that is being worked on. I am hoping my sons shoot their 1st deer on that land like I did 20 something years ago. Just yesterday as a matter of fact, I ordered a lot of 90 wildlife specie trees from the NYS DEC nursury to plant up there. It was $30 for 90 trees, made perfect sense to me. I am constanly looking to improve the land up there. My son and I cut many saplings 3/4 way so there was browse for the deer. The trimmings of the apple/cherry tree pruning I did in the last 4 weeks was left on the ground and the deer ate all the buds of them. I can only get up to the land/camp on weekends, so time is limited. But I try to improve the land every year for wildlife.
-
It is a fall planting and deer will graze the heck out of it. Use plotsaver or some sort of scare tactic to keep the animals away until its taken good. It is a annual planting.
-
Anyone getting out this weekend on NYS youth turkey weekend? My son Joe and I will definitely be out there saturday morning. We will be hunting NY's 3H region.

I have one in my older model 835 and I love it! My son and I have taken quite a few birds with ole faithful as we call it. Money well spent, ofcourse if you got it for $5 like that other guy then it would be money even BETTER spent
