  1. I bought a mixed breed dog roughly a year ago from the local pound. Nobody is really sure what breed she is although it is clear that she is part Shepherd. My question is: What are the chances of training her to hunt pheasants? I've started working with her and she seems to really enjoy it and is doing well at it, but I have not yet started her on live birds and am curious how she will react. What do you guys think? Is it possible for her to be a decent bird dog or is it pretty unlikely?
  2. Just wondering if anyone around here was a golfer. I've had the itch to get out and play for about 3 months now but the weather just seems to not want to cooperate. I just bought the Taylormade Superfast 2.0 driver and I've been dying to get out to the range and hit a few with it. Hopefully within the next week or so I'll be able to get out on the links, but the weatherman is saying possibly snow tonight. Anybody else been playing? Also, I just ordered the Medicus driver, anyone know anything about it or have any input on it? I read some great reviews, hopefully it will improve the swing a bit.
  3. I went out the other night and did some more scouting, still no deer but I'm finding more and more sign of them. Missed a coyote at about 200 yards. As I was leaving the property, I saw the property across the street had 4 deer out in their field, which gave me a little hope. My uncle and I went out yesterday and made a hog pen and set up a trail cam to see what comes through. Went out again this morning and didn't see much of anything, but I was mostly checking the pen to see if anything had visited. Again, when I left this morning, the neighboring property had 8 deer out in their field and they seemed pretty comfortable. One was actually bedded down in the middle of the field. The owner of our property said he is going to start cultivating the fields and would gladly get us a spot ready for a food plot, so that is next on the list. Hopefully once we get a couple food plots in there the deer will stay put. We have plenty of cover and a few nice sized ponds so I think the only thing we are really lacking is food.
  4. Thanks for the suggestions guys. We were putting corn out for a while but then the father of the guy my uncle leases from told us not to because it messes with his calves stomachs? I've been doing my best to thin out the hogs and coyotes. We put the cams out over the corn before and only got hogs and raccoons. I'm going to head out there pretty soon to try and take another hog and hopefully some coyotes.
  5. I'm not sure if this is the right place for this post but I'm not sure where else it would go. Anyway, I'm from Ohio and my uncle who lives in Texas recently leased a 400 acre piece of hunting land that he asked me to come scout due to his bad knees and not being able to get around the place very well. So I am currently in Texas and working on trying to figure the place out. He has said that he has seen only one deer during the two months he has had the lease which I can attest to after a week of scouting. The land holds many hogs, turkey, coyotes, and other animals, including some cows. The owner of the land said that the guys that he leased to about a year ago went out during the night on their ATV's and trucks and shot everything they saw. So my question is, where are the deer? I have walked the entire area and have seen some sign (tracks, droppings, and a few rubs) but I have yet to see any deer myself. We are planning on starting some food plots where we have seen the most sign, using Tecomate. I'm wondering if they are moving through at night and bedding elsewhere, or if they are just completely nocturnal and I haven't found where they bed yet. We have set up some trail cams but have only gotten hogs and raccoons on film. Is it possible that the other guys shot the place out and the deer just aren't there anymore? If so, how do we get them back? Any advice, ideas, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated guys!
  6. Awesome deer, love the bladed tines.
  7. Really cool video, Steve. I hunt for a lot of reasons, most of them having nothing to do with harvesting an animal. I hunt mainly for the experience and the chance to get out into nature with friends and especially family. To me there is nothing better than the day before hunting season when everyone is sharing stories about big bucks they were lucky enough to take or the one that got away. Being in nature and seeing and experiencing things that people who don't hunt would never get to experience is why I hunt. Although I enjoy just being out in the woods or in the field, I also love the feeling of watching deer come within bow range and not knowing that you exist, and if you are lucky enough to harvest an animal, there is no better feeling. That is why I hunt.
  8. Nice buck. Congrats to your wife.
  9. That's neat, never seen anything like it before.

    WOW!!

I was out Monday and Tuesday and only saw 8 deer total. We were driving both days and there was just nothing around. We ended up killing three of the eight, but the numbers are way down this year. It was raining on Monday morning and windy and cold the rest of the time we were out. Hopefully the next weekend and Muzzleloader season go better.
  11. That is really cool. Rare enough to see a piebald get shot, let alone two in the same day. Their markings are similar, possible relatives? Or does that have nothing to do with it?
  12. I'll be out too. I love gun season, especially with people pushing deer all over the place, never know what might come running by.
  13. Two really nice deer there. Congrats.
