  1. Most years I hunt Easterns on my parents' land in SE OK, and maybe make a trip with my father out to western OK (Black Kettle) to chase Rios. This year's a bit different as we have a baby at home. I'm trying to stay closer to the Tulsa area. I've hunted around Heyburn with limited success in the past, so I'm looking for other public options. Does anyone have experience with other public land in the Tulsa area? I'd love to find a good area along the Verdigris channel and am considering going as far as Oolagah, Ft Gibson, and Osage county if necessary. I'd be interested in closer in private options too, just haven't found any good ones yet. Any suggestions for places to check out would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  2. I closed out my season by filling two management tags the week leading up to Christmas. Plenty of venison in the freezer and my thoughts are now turning to gobblers. Good luck to anyone still after them!
  3. Both beautiful bucks. Congratulations!
  4. I killed a 7 point on the evening before Thanksgiving. He's actually what us southeastern Oklahoma boys would call an 8 point but his right brow is less than an inch so I suppose he's a 7 for the Realtree contest. Please find below my entry info and pictures showing the points and tag (click either picture to see a bigger version). Note that because we operate our own Oklahoma check station as part of our participation in the Wildlife Department's Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP), I'm listed as the "checked by" person as well as the hunter. elnor 7 point buck Team Lucky 13
  5. I also killed a 7 point, on the evening before Thanksgiving. He's actually what us southeastern Oklahoma boys would call an 8 point but his right brow is less than an inch so I suppose he's a 7 for the Realtree contest. I'm uploading pics and will get him entered in the contest thread asap. [update: I entered him here.] Meanwhile, here are a couple of pics (click either one to see a bigger copy of it). Him where he fell on top of a creek bank: and me with him: I'm hoping to get out a time or two more this month for some doe management. Hope everyone else is enjoying time afield with family and friends, too!
  6. I'll be back after them next week, planning to hunt from Wednesday morning through at least the end of the weekend and if possible maybe 2-3 days after that. We've had a very slow rut here. I'm hoping things are just a bit delayed, but we'll see.
  7. Welcome, Shane. And congrats on your 10 point! I'm looking forward to seeing a picture and getting more info on him once you get him entered into the contest thread. It's been slow for us so far, too. Seems like the rut still hasn't fired up full bore here yet. Fingers crossed, things should get better soon.
  8. Great buck, congratulations! Our weekend was a bit of a bust. We did get out and hunt but it was rainy and windy with very little deer movement. Nothing was secured for the freezer or the taxidermist. Hoping for better weather and another trip to the woods soon.
  9. My father has picked up some decent bucks on his trailcams, including one that may be a shooter. Hoping to find out in person this weekend when our muzzleloader season opens. Hope everyone is getting some quality time in the woods!
  10. Love that split brow buck! Good luck this weekend and let us know how it goes.
  11. I did have several folks who said they'd be happy to let me hunt, but that they'd already given permission to someone else (in many cases, someone who bought the landowner tags they'd applied for). But it did work out and I agree it's too bad it's once in a lifetime. Who knows, maybe I'll call some of them back up in a future year to see if they'd let me bow hunt after their landowner tag hunters head home. Good luck this coming weekend!
  12. Jeramie, I did have to talk to quite a few people and chase various leads before I finally found someone that would let me hunt. Found 3/4 section the day before the season opened, but wouldn't you know it there were two bucks and several does on it and I made the shot just 30 minutes into the first morning's hunt! So it all came together in the end. BTW we tagged out in Wyoming over the weekend, too. I'm back home and processing meat. Next up, muzzleloader whitetails in about three weeks.
  13. Thanks, Dawg. Wyoming trip update: My dad and I have been doing pretty well, including filling our buck tags with a couple of nice ones and one of our doe tags so far. Best of all we're having a great time! Hope everyone gets a chance to get out into the fall hunting woods (or desert, or plains, or whatever) soon. It feels good to type "fall hunting woods", doesn't it? My Wyoming buck where he fell: This view shows his mass and curl better (we rough scored him 81 1/4, just shy of B&C all time): My dad's:
  14. Thanks for the congrats, everyone. We'll be hunting between Casper and Thermopolis. We have buck tags in one unit and doe tags in an adjacent unit. We love antelope meat and so wanted to maximize how much freezer filling we can do! We scouted some on our way out west and there are plenty of pronghorn in both units, so now we just have to focus on making good stalks and shots. Should be fun. And good luck to everybody hunting or on their way to a hunt!
  15. One Okie buck antelope down, one WY buck and two WY does to go! Here are some pics of some of the pronghorn spotted during my OK hunt: And here's the buck that paused too long when the others in the fourth picture above left out: I'm now in Casper to scout our pronghorn unit and vacation around WY. I'll try to post an update in a week or two once we start hunting here.
  16. Hello to everyone, glad to be on Team Lucky 13! (or whatever we end up calling it... I'll be hunting the Oklahoma muzzleloader and rifle seasons in October-December, but before that I'm chasing antelope in the OK panhandle and then WY for the next several weeks. So it's going to be a very busy hunting season for me. Hope everyone's scouting is going well and that we'll all have some great pics and stories to share this fall!
  17. Thanks again for your response. Unfortunately Boise City is not in Texas Co, so this won't work for my hunt. Best of luck with your leases and business, though.
  18. Thanks for the info. I definitely want to hunt DIY style. Do you have any property leased in Texas Co, OK (my tag is for that county west of Hwy 136 only), or is it in Cimarron Co? If in Texas Co, would you consider a small trespass fee for a self guided hunter?
  19. Thanks for the pointer on the KOA. I think we've decided to camp at the Boysen Reservoir, maybe catch a shower now and then at Thermopolis or Riverton. Getting excited as we leave in a couple weeks!
  20. A friend of my father's suggested the possibility of camping at Boysen Reservoir. Anyone here been there? Which campground(s) would you recommend if so? http://wyoparks.state.wy.us/Site/SiteInfo.asp?siteID=2
  21. Good luck! My father and I will be out in central WY next month to get after them. Hope to fill buck and doe tags while we're there.
  22. I'll check Craigslist out, thanks for that pointer. Yeah, I am hoping to have at least something lined up before I head out, but I also plan to road scout and talk to people after I get out there. I don't think there's any public land in Texas Co; and when I called the ODWC biologist listed as a contact for the hunt, his tips all centered on meeting people and asking once I'm out there. So, I'm planning to head out a day or two before the hunt and see what I can spy and who I can speak with about permission. I'm really excited as not only did I draw this OK hunt, but my dad and I drew WY antelope tags after several years with no luck. So after we leave Guymon, it's time to point the truck northwest for central WY. Should be quite the trip!
  23. My father and I drew out antelope tags for Wyoming units 67 & 75 and are gathering up info as we get our gear and travel plans ready. We're tentatively thinking of staying in or around Thermopolis, at least until we get the lay of the land. I'm wondering if there are any organized campgrounds available anywhere in the units, besides in towns? I'm guessing there aren't, but that we could camp per BLM rules on BLM portions. Any suggestions for where to camp, grab a quick shower or wash some hunting clothes, and other things we might need to know would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
