  1. Re: Blade Goes Tiger Hunting Ditto what Luke and Steve said
  2. I'm done loading all my gear into my pickup, and I'm ready to head west. I'll be rifle deer hunting in western SD for the next 9 days followed by a hunt in Nebraska for almost as long. Hope to have a few more buck pics when I get back.
  3. Re: elk camp question Can you drive right to your camp or do you have to pack in? If you can drive to it I figure you should be ok as long as you take some precautions. 2 Washington hunters died this fall to asphyxiation (sp) Just make sure you have a way to vent it good so the same doesn't happen to you. On another note though if you don't go and scout in the summer, how do you know whre to hunt when you get there? Just curious. Anyway best of luck to ya and vent that thing if your going to use it.
  4. Re: Pheasent recipes I take the breaasts and filet them into strips. I wrap that around a jalapeno pepper and them wrap a piece of bacon around that and grill it. Makes a great horsdevours or snack. I'll rpobably be doing some up this weekend when I watch Nebraska beat the dickens out of those Aggies down at A&M.
  5. Re: rifleman25 scores [ QUOTE ] Well done Brian. Very nice buck. Its weird how sometimes when we mess up on a shot placement, it ends up working out in our favour..eh [/ QUOTE ] I hear ya there Buckee. I believe you had a similar story unfold over the weekend eh?
  6. Re: Mosquito with a Cannon? I have several magnums in my safes. I try to buy two to three new rifles a year, but sometimes I only get one. Most of them are still in the boxes never opened. I hunt the so called "northern deer" as well antelope, elk, and muleys every season. The largest rifle I have set up to hunt is an old BDL Remington Chambered in 7mm Rem mag. I haven't used it in years. My go to rifles are the 243, 25-06, 257wby mag, and the .308 win. I have taken many many animals with the .308 win and some were at rather impressive distances. If you look at the numbers of the .308 win you'll notice they are very, very similar to that of the 30-06 and in thesame case as the 7mm-08, 260, and the 243. I have no problems with hunters shooting the big guns but it does seem like overkill when you hear of a southern hunter shooting a 30 cal belted magnum. Do what you want though. I have a very dear friend that lives in Miami Florida and unts in southern Ga and insists on shooting a .338 win mag for everything. I just chuckle when he mentions that gun and go on about my business. To each his own I guess.
  7. Re: Weatherby 257 I have the Mark V Lazermark. My dad bought it for me years ago and it has killed many many deer and antelope. I love the quality of the wood, as well as the rich high luster blue on it. It is simply a beautiful pices to have in my collection and it's accuracy is out of this world. I switched to loading the barnes TSX BT bullet in the 100 grain size this year and have had nothing but good things to say about it. The factory ammo is expencive for it if thats what you'll be shooting. Look for arounf 40.00 a box. I personally am not a fan of the Vanguard rifles because I believe they are made by another company and just stamped with the weatherby name. If your going to make the choice to join the club of being a weatherby owner I would recommend buying a true weatherby, but thats just my opinion. I have three now and they are some of my most prized possessions.

  10. Re: Hey architects/engineers/designers... JERAMIE!!! Sorry I'm a chemical/fluid engineer in an oilfield. I'm of no use on this one. I had to know geology, chemisty, physics, and a host of other things I haven't had to remember since college.
  11. Re: rifleman25 scores Steve man you goofed my story all up sorta lol. The buck was walking and I drew and kept following him. I led the front shoulder a little but as I released the arrow hw stoped and the arrow went right through the dead center of his neck before he could look up. He went straight to the ground and stayed there. He was dead before I got done climbing down from my stand. He isn't too bad of a buck but there is still a bigger one out there cruising around for Steve to have a crack at. My buddy I went with also picked up a young 4x4 tonight off the road to save the rack from. Since I left my camera at home I had to use the pic his wife emailed me. I'm leaving for a week of rifle hunting in western SD and Nebraska tomorrow but we plan to take pics in the field tomorrow morning. I figure I'll have field pics of this and 2 other bucks by next weekend when I get home. Here is the pic. The road kill is on the left and mine is on the right.
  12. Re: I want to cry! EVERYBODY knows my honeyhole. Set up right on the edge of the tribal ground and hammer him as he is coming to ya.
  13. Re: elk camp question Plus if you cut your wood in the summer say Late August or early Sept it will be stacked, split and if it's dead wood it will already be dried. I also cut the lodge ples for me tents then. Makes for alot less work when you get to camp and everything is up and running so much sooner.

    video taping

Re: video taping I have filmed 2 years worth of hunts for my show "Texas Borders and Beyond". Plan on being able to use about 25% at best of what you tape. Make sure you have a good fluid head tripod and know how to work your camera. I would use nothing less than a Cannon GL1 for a camera. Practice panning, zooming, changing Dvd's and battery's on the go and in a hurry but still keeping sound and motion to a minimum. A wireless microphone or two to go with your camera is also well worth the money. Be in shape because you never know where you will be going and what you will be hunting. If the dude your working with got 3 out of 11 that were useable that is not actually too bad. Some guys get paid good and others get absolutely nothing for filming so just go with it and get your foot in the door and see where this goes. I have had to leave on short notice several times as well so plan on getting a call one evening and having to go the next morning.
  15. Re: Son\'s First Elk congrats to the hunter. I remember my first elk hunt an the cow I killed like it was this morning.
