  1. thanks guys! don't think I'll ever get tired of staring at him while having coffee and breakfast, good way to start the day, haha.
  2. finally got my headmount back today...this was the buck I shot in December that lost his antlers as he ran after the shot. Taxidermist did a fantastic job, you would never be able to tell. Rough scored at 156 3/8. Looks awesome on the wall!
  3. A little late, but just thought I'd share this story and see if it has ever happened to anyone else. Our archery season ends December 15th here, so I decided to go for one last sit for a couple hours. Left work early, threw on a camo jacket and off I went. Not 20min on stand, this giant that I've never seen before comes into the field. I arrowed him at 25yds. But when he runs off, I noticed something fall when he ducked under a branch, wasn't sure if it was the branch itself, or as it turned out, his left side. I started tracking about 30min after, and find both antlers about 3ft apart. It's not uncommon for them to lose their antlers early, especially if there's snow, but this is definitely a first for me that a buck loses them while running away after a well placed shot. Regardless, still all smiles with my best buck to date. anything strange like this happen to anyone else?
  4. nice way of saying 'suck it up', I get it...
  5. how many of you use turkey barrels on your shotgun, and do you find it really makes a difference? reason why i'm asking is, i was given a Mossberg 535 12 ga. for Christmas, with the waterfowl, slug, and turkey barrels (interchangeable)...i was patterning it in the other day and couldn't believe the recoil! i was shooting 3inch mag #6 turkey loads. just wondering if it's the shorter barrel or the shot, and if it's worth using the longer waterfowl barrel instead? any help greatly appreciated, for me and my shoulder, haha...
  6. anyone know where I can get some good quality turnip seeds (online) at a decent price? thanks!
  7. thanks a lot guys! appreciate it very much! I never knew the story behind it, but now I do and it makes it that much better...thanks again.
  8. hey folks, have any of you ever heard the song God's Front Porch, and if so, can you tell me who sings it or even better, where i can find it? thanks!
  9. i agree 100%. but we've been noticing a decline in buck harvest in the region, as well as bucks sightings over the past couple of years. i will be doing more extensive research, as well as analyzing harvest reports. but everyone seems to be on the same page that does outnumber the bucks by a fairly wide margin.
  10. just wondering what, if any, programs your state is using in order to keep the doe population in check and lowering the buck to doe ratio. i seen roughly 40 deer this past season during 4 days of rifle and a half dozen of bow. in all of that, 4-5 bucks, so that puts the herd to an approx. 10:1 ratio, which is not exactly ideal for producing mature bucks, and overall herd health. trying to get the message around and hopefully put a little pressure on the MNR to change things a bit. so if you can offer any info or advice on your programs, perhaps maybe pros and cons based on your opinion. hoping to get a good idea of which direction to head and to base my proposal. thank you very much for your time and help!
  11. definitely take a look at the hostage...similar to a whisker biscuit, much smaller, and easy to tune. it's worth a glace.
  12. Definitely take a look at Irish Setter boots, i own the bucktracker and bucktracker knee highs, awesome boots, i wouldn't put anything else on in our cold Canadian weather. they are both 800g insulate.
  13. about 4-41/2 hours west of ottawa, city called North Bay
  14. well, finally tagged out on our second last day of archery season. went out about 3 in my ground blind, and sent my cousin's husband to my stand. no sooner i was settled in a doe walks out but pins me right away...(i've busted her a few times leaving my blind) but luckily the Doghouse did the trick and she couldn't completely make me out. anyways, managed to get a 40yd shot through the heart. the arrow even broke the leg and definitely bent up the Rage, ah well. she went 60yds and piled up. finally got dark enough that i could head 'er back home without worrying about spooking deer for my partner, only to find out that he to had shot a doe (mine's bigger though, haha) . he doesn't hunt much, and this was his first bowhuntin' experience. needless to say, it was as if he shot a monster buck, he was pumped, and full of questions about how to go about tracking her. she to only went about 60yds. we were cutting it close, tomorrow's the last day, but it was definitely a good season, and looks like i'll have a new hunting buddy now. looking forward to next year's season. now the countdown 'till turkey begins, haha.
  15. that right there is wrong...must've been a pretty boring day in the treestand when he thought that costume up, haha
  16. i hope that's real, 15min from my where i live ! that area is known for monsters, lots of agriculture.
  17. just to add, the humidity is a big factor, and the colder air is, the less water molecules it can hold, but yet still be saturated...it gets complicated, but yes, deer do have a harder time smelling in cold dry air, your scent does 'linger' as it would in moist air...none the less, hunt with the same precautions you would regardless temp...good luck!
  18. yeah, it happens once in a while that bucks drop before January, most of them probably still have them tho...we've also seen some still with their racks in late March, usually the smaller bucks though. all depends i guess.
  19. decided to sit in my stand, despite the almost blizzard like conditions that's supposed to bring another 8-12" on top of the 24" we already have ... anyways, been tough hunting, not too many bucks around. about 20min left of shooting light, this big bodied deer steps out with a little doe. well, when i noticed his grey face and his stained-black tarsal glands, minus the antlers, needless to say i had a few nice words to say to him under my breath, haha. just can't seem to get a break. ah well, 6 more days left.
  20. looking at getting my Dad a traditional bow for christmas. i'm thinking recurve style, but that's as far as my knowledge goes on this subject. any info on what to look for as far as brands/models? it'll be used mostly for target shooting and deer hunting. thanks for the help!
  21. i'm from northern ontario, and no, to my knowledge, i have not heard of the ministry bringing back the spring bear hunt, and nor do i expect it to happen in the next few years. out of curiousity, who/what was your source?
  22. well, we looked for him again this morning, jumped him again maybe 50yds from where we stopped last night, still bleeding. i had to go to school, but my cousin tracked for miles. and yeah, i smelled the blood, no gut shot...judging by the position of the blood in the bed, it was pretty forward, maybe even brisket, i don't know anymore...they sure are tough animals though...thanks for the help guys.
  23. so here's the situation, my cousin shot at a buck this evening, wasn't too sure of placement (pretty much because he was too excited, so he said) he definitely heard a loud swack, which is common with mechanicals. we took up track about an hour, hour and a half, and immediately found blood on ground and spraying on trees to the left...we found his arrow, and 8inches of it broke off, and soon after a couple beds full of blood...i'm guessing we might've pushed him, unfortunately, but we've got good snow up here so it won't be a problem taking up the track again...so theory is, he hit one lung or maybe shouldery blade? anybody have any experience with this kind of situation, help would be greatly appreciated Ryan
