I have booked a hunt to Texas this year for exotics. I will be hunting a place that is an owner/operator business. 1 guy owns the place, acts as the guide and the cook. I have never traveled to hunt so I need some advice from those of you with experience. My questions are: Should there be any tips given to the owner since he is also the guide. I understand that if I was going on a hunt where the guide worked for the owner I would tip, but I'm not sure on this one so I'm looking for input. For the first time I have to get on an airplane to go hunting so I am asking myself how am I getting the meat home? What are you guys doing to get a 100-200 pounds of meat back home? Give me some more advice on what to bring, what questions to ask the outfitter and what to watch out for. The only thing that is chosen and set in stone is where I am going. That research is done and my deposit has been sent. Although I have been hunting for 35 years I'm a beginner at hunting away from home and my own truck so HELP!!

If you are talking about the late Flintlock ONLY Muzzleloader season, that single "buck" tag you get with your over-the-counter license becomes an either sex tag for the late Flintlock season. In addition to your license, you must purchase a muzzleloader permit too in order to hunt with a smoker. Being a Pa native and hunting there for 30+ years, it seems easy to understand for me. However, I can see how it is complicated for a guy buying his first Pa license.

Absolutely fantastic story. Love the pics along with the story. Congrats on a fine buck. I'm green with envy.

Congrats on a fine buck and from the smile on the face of your young hunting buddy, you have a hunting partner in the making there.

Good Grief! That is a monster. Congrats to the young hunter. He will spend the rest of his life trying to finder a better one. WOW!!!

The mentality of others plays no part in my decision to shoot or not. I hunt for ME. If I see a deer and I want to pass, I will. If I see a deer I want to shoot, I will. The trophy is in my eyes only. If it is legal and I have a tag for it and want to take it home, I will. It is my decision at that moment and whether it is a monster, a spike or a doe no one will decide whether or not I shoot but me.

Sorry to hear about your disapointment, but look at it this way: You could be stuck at work and not able to get to the woods at all. I would rather be in the woods enjoying the real "nature channel" and see no deer than be stuck at work wishin' I was in the woods. It's like the old bumper sticker, "The worst day in the woods still beats the best day at work."

I was looking for parts for my old API treestand last month and found this website: http://www.orderoutdoors.com/index.asp I placed an order, paid immediately with Paypal, and my order was never sent. I tried to contact them many times and was ignored. I have now opened a Paypal dispute to get my money back. I just wanted to warn you all to avoid ordering from this site so you wouldn't have to endure the trouble that I am having.

AHHHH! The feeling of taking your first buck..........You will never forget it. Congrats on a fine shot on a fine buck.

We saw many bears while bowhunting early season in North Central PA this year. My wife was lucky enough to get her camera out and take this pic before the bruin got past her.

A quick shot of my buddy taken as he arrived back at the truck after a day in the bowhunting woods.

It's NY Shotgun season, but I decided to take my muzzleloader to the woods last friday. I like the one-shot challenge of the smoker. At 8AM this guy came in from my left and turned broadside at 35 yards. I gave him a lil "baaa" and he stopped. I dropped the hammer, the world turned to smoke and he took off like a racehorse with tail tucked and head low. I gave him about 20 minutes and took up the trail. I found the tarcks in the light snow but no blood. I followed the tracks about 60 yards still with no blood. I started to become concerned when I emerged from the thick woods into an area that was more open. I scanned the woods and spotted him laying against a log about 50 yards away. I continued to follow the tracks to the buck and the blood trail started about 15 yards from where he crashed. The shot was a perfect heart/lung center punch. I am still surprised that he didn't leave a better blood trail and I thank goodness for the little snow that made it easier to find his tracks. He isn't a monster, but is, by far, the best buck I have killed with the muzzleloader. The only bad part was that he ran away from the truck leaving me with a 350 yard drag uphill to the road. Although sweatin' like crazy, I was still smiling when I arrived at the truck almost 2 hours later. He's an 8 point and field dressed at 155 pounds. The gun is a CVA Optima shooting 100 grains of pyrodex pellets behind a 240 grain saboted bullet.

This was taken by my buddy on the way to his stand this season. The bird did not leave his dinner even when the pic was taken from 15 feet away.

No doubt, you're a PRO. Awesome!!

I am a Montana Black Gold fan. I use the MBG Flashpoint. Not only is this sight very bright and durable but you cannot beat the MBG warranty. They will replace any part you break forever. This season I accidently stepped on my bow cracking both the mounting bracket and the windage bar of the sight. I emailed MBG with pics of the damage stating that it was my own foolishness that caused it. FOUR HOURS later I got an email back telling me that they would send replacement parts. 3 days later the parts arrived at no charge. MBG will be the only sight that is ever on any bow I own.

Tioga is a fun place to hunt, Ruth. That is my picture on themain page of the hunt-tioga.com website. When you go, ask for Rod and tell him Jay said to find you a monster. I've killed 2 there, both over 300 pounds and both with my bow. You will have a blast. They are down-home country folks just like us. Oh, and if there are "escaped" hogs on surrounding areas. They would have to Houdini Hog to get out AND you would have to get permission from local landowners because all the land around Tioga Boar is privately owned

My Mathews Switchback is headed back to the shop tonight for the second time to replace the limbs due to delamination. Both times the bottom limb has split. I am starting to think this thing may just be jinxed and I may just replace it. Today I have been searching for honest objective reviews of the new bows out this year. Can anyone point me to a site with honest bow reviews. I have been a Mathews shooter for many years but what little I have found on the web is leading me to believe the Drenalin has a lot of hand shock. And, I can't find much on the Vectrix at all. Opinions and web site suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, and I am not looking for the standard response, "go shoot them and see what fits you best." I am hoping to limit my trips to various bow shops by getting opinions here first. Thanks all. Jay
