    .280 rem

I shoot a TC Encore in .280 and really like it. I have tried many makes of ammo and I have chosen Remington AccuTip 140 gr.
  2. Thanks everyone. I have my eye on a SAKO 85 synthetic stainless in a 338 WIN MAG. I'll let you know when I part with the $.
  3. Mine are also scope mounted and leaning against the sides of the gun cabinet as you have described. If you come up with anything that works, let us know.
  4. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Uff da (can also be spelled uff-da, uffda, uff-dah, oofda, ufda, oofta or ufta) is an exclamation of Scandinavian origin that is relatively common in the Upper Midwestern states of the United States. It roughly means "drats," "oops!" or "ouch!", especially if the "ouch!" is an empathetic one. In Norwegian Midwestern USA cultures, "Uff Da" translates into: "I am overwhelmed."

    monster buck?

That's a monster as far as I'm concerned.
  7. Sorry guys... I just think you need a bigger gun for a 1000 lb animal. My .308 or .243 are just perfect for whitetail. Not just that.... I love COCOA!

    Weekend plans?

I'm getting out of this cold and blowing snow and flying to Orlando Florida. Business trip but at least I'm not shoveling snow.
  9. I am surprised when reading the threads how many Canadians are members on the RT forums. Does anyone know how many Canadians are members on this site?
  10. Like many have said before me, "WOW" I have hunted for more than 20 years and I have never seen a pig like that. I hope he knows what he's got.
  11. I wear 1000 gram Rocky's for most of the fall but on really cold days of early winter, I take them off in my stand and also wear the boot blankets that were mentioned earlier, with those disposable warmers in each. -20 C and my feet are always warm.
  12. If you are buying your first gun ever, and plan on going deer hunting, I wouldn't make my first gun a .300 weatherby mag. Great gun, but if your not use to shooting, I would say it's a little much. Have a look at a .270, .308 or 30-06. These are all great calibres and will suite you well for the rest of your life. Put a .300 mag on your list of things to buy before your 25th birthday but dont' start there. For a scope, purchase the best scope within your budget. My suggestion...a .308 bolt action with a Bushnell 3200 3X9 scope. Great gun, good scope. You will have it for years. If you want to spend a little more for a scope, the Nikon Monarch is a great scope as are the scopes in this price range from all the name brand manufactures. Good luck, hunt safe and have fun!
  13. I was surfing the web and read this quote from Chuck Hawks that I thought I would share with all my friends from the OTPG. "Recoil is probably the biggest concern with any .300 or 8mm Magnum, and particularly with the Super Magnums, which are very unpleasant to shoot. Perfect stock fit is paramount. It is not easy to hit a medium size animal precisely at long range (in excess of 300 yards, let's say), and it becomes a lot more difficult with a rifle that kicks hard. As big game guides have learned, most shooters simply cannot shoot their big case .30's accurately; they simply cannot concentrate on the fundamentals of trigger release and sight picture with that much recoil looming over them"
  14. Looks great. I'll take mine medium-rare,... thanks.
  15. The exact same think happened to me. A black bear got a hold of it. I tried many times to fix it. The frustration wasn't worth it and I bought a new one. I hung the new one from a tree and put stove pipe around a tree to keep the bears off. Hope it works. I did end up getting great bear photos on the trail camera.
  16. It worked great for me and my "high speed" is... well... not so high. I'm on satelite service but the video worked great. When do we get to see more? Great job!

    Go ahead and laugh

I'm sure that dryer will smell for along time. I know what a couple of drops smell like, I can't imagine a bottle breaking. Your going to need a new dryer. You will eventually get the smell out of this one after several loads but what to you do with the clothes your putting in those several loads. I will share this one with the boys at the rink.
  18. I guess, what I should ask is, if I am looking at a 338 what are your opinions of a 338 Mag vs smaller 325 Short Mag? Does the reduction in recoil make the Short Mag worth while or do you lose too much in "punch"? If I'm looking at the 325 Short Mag, does it far exceed the ballistics of the 300 Mag? Is the 325 Short Mag the answer. Am I better with a 338 Mag, 300 Mag or 300 Short Mag? Perhaps like most other caliber arguments, there isn't an answer, there all slightly different, their all good? I'm looking for a new gun and after I buy it, I don't want to get the, " I wish I would have's......."
  19. I don't know if it's global warming or global freezing. Since mid November, the weather here west of Sudbury has been just crazy. First we get 3 days of -30 super cold weather, than we will get 6 inches of snow and seasonal weather, then it turns warm and rains for a week and finally circles back to -30 again and it's too cold to do anything and everything is glare ice. This has just repeated itself for the past 6 weeks. Just after New Years it got very cold and I decided to flood our local outdoor rink. After three days the ice was great. Then the rains came again and I am back to gravel. Is winter coming or going???
  20. Great day for him and I'm sure even a better day for you. My dad always said he enjoyed hunting deer, but the best deer hunt he was ever on was the day I shot my first deer. With my boys just 2 and 4, I have some time to go before I experience this excitement but when I hear stories like this, It really puts a smile on my face. Great story Horst, thanks for sharing!
  21. This is to the point exactly. I too have seen deer spook and not spook. For those that spook, I prefer to have an IR. More importantly because I place my cameras near my hunting stands. For that one buck of 100 that spooks and never returns to that spot, I have swithed to IR.
  22. I was using 777 for the past few years and like you, tried the American Pioneer powder ( Jim Shockey's Gold) and was amazed at how clean it was. After several shots, the cleaning patch came out slightly colored. With my 777 the same patch is black after the first shot. I am sold on it by have made a change, I use to use 100 grains of 777 but now use 150 grains of Shockey's Gold. I'm not sure if it's just me but I don't feel it has the punch that 777 has but it sure is a lot cleaner. I've switched.
  23. Great looking trail camera shots. Sorry about the incident. Terrible story!
  24. I consider myself a SCOPE'r but recently decided I wanted to get a new gun for moose hunting. I don't need another deer cartridge, this gun will strictly be for moose. I want to go big. Can I get your opinions on 300 mags in both long and short, 338 mags, both long and short and might as well consider the 325 as well. not converting, simply expanding my horizons.... SCOPE'r forever!
  25. I recently spoke to my son's Jr. Kindergarten and she told me about a recent exercise in class when she was asking the kids what they want to be when they grow up. Doctors, Policeman, Fireman, Hockey players were the usual anwswers. My son said when he grows up, he is going to be the guy in the pictures of his dad's hunting magazines. What a smart kid!
