well then the real question is was it shot in ohio or illinois?

Got this same text msg. Only I live in Ohio and was told it was killed in Greenville Ohio. I have a feeling this is one of those deer that causes a lot of contraversy each year and in the end none of us will ever hear anything about it again. IF anyone has any accurate information on this deer and are 100% sure on it, I'd love to hear it.

Same here.. tons of old hunting magazines that the old woman has been nagging me about getting rid of. This seems like the best solution that. Anything to support our troops. Send me the address and i'd be more than happy to bundle them up and ship them out. Thank you for your service and stay safe!

climbed in this morning around 6:30 am. Wanted to get in there plenty early and let things settle down. focusing on filling my doe tag early then hunt hard for the bucks a little closer to the rut. Not that i would hesitate to lay the smack down on one if the opportunity arises. Thought the deer would be moving all morning with this front that was scheduled to come in around noon. Waited and waited and hadnt seen a thing.. around 9:45-10:00 i was gonna pack it in. packed up, lowered my bow and was climbing down the tree ( usually carry a hoist rope with my so when i lowered my bow i just dropped the rope) a few steps down the tree i look up and here come four deer 3 does and a button buck come 5 yards from my tree. i managed to get back in the stand just so the would see me and spook. as soon as they passed two more small button bucks took a similar trail passing at 15 yards...needless to say i got not shot with my bow on the ground and me in the tree. Seems that something like this always happens at least once a season.. oh well... what can ya do. keep after em' i guess.. hope everyone is having a great season!

i got skunked... didnt help that half way through my sit someone decided to drive a gator through the patch of hardwoods i was hunting. Guess thats the price you'll sometimes pay when you're hunting a piece of property you have permission to and its not your own.. oh well cant kill a deer sitting on the couch. had to get out there and give it a shot.

hang in there man i feel your pain. I'm currently at college and the closest farm i have permission to hunt is over an hour away. between balancing classes and driving the hour and a half to get to my spot it can be a pain. Going to try to make it out tonight though. Cant pass up this little cold spell before the rain thats supposed to hit this weekend.

ya he does ... he's a shooter in my book!

Weather has finally taken a turn for the better here in Ohio. First few days of the season it was moderate and rainy. Finally dried up a bit but was windy the next few days. Finally have cool temps and good north wind. Heading out tonight. Came close to closing the deal on a big doe saturday but couldnt quite get it done. Hopefully i'll have some better luck tonight. Good Luck to all. I know October 1st is the bow opener for a lot of states so get out there and knock em down!

I got the same trail cam the other day and got the pics back today with similar results. I'm quite satisfied with the quality of the pictures. The buck in the second picture should be nice if ya give him another year or so. -
Ohio is a great big buck state that often goes unrecognized. I've done quite a bit of hunting in south eastern ohio (coshocton county specifically) just north of Muskingum. The amount of deer is unreal but you have to do a little work to find the big ones as you do in any big buck situation. I strongly reccomend the area. As for asking farmers you may find some difficulty there considering a ton of people hunt in these areas. Personally I love the terrain in Eastern Ohio : rolling hills a great mix of hardwoods and agricultural land. It makes for perfect whitetail habitat. Were you planning on hunting some of the public land located in the area if your plan to ask around with farmers doesn't pan out? If you've got any specifics that you have questions about feel free to ask.

Overall i was satisfied with my thanksgiving break. I was able to hunt quite a bit and saw a ton of deer just not too many shot opportunities. I saw 4 different bucks on one farm i hunted the first few days but only one of those gave me an opportunity. i had a decent 7 point come in and give me a 14 yard shot and shot right over his back. I knew i had the pin right on him so i went home and shot my bow a little more and then went to the bow shop. The archery pro spotted what was wrong right away. My arrow rest silencer was causing catching my flethching when i shot, kicking the arrow in various directions. With a few minor adjustments I was back at it and dead on. I hunted that evening and watched 7 does and 2 good bucks. The two bucks made scrapes about 65 yards from my stand but wouldn't come any closer. Went to eastern ohio over the weekend and saw two more different bucks but no opportunities. I could have shot a doe but a buck was following her, he just wouldn't come in on my trail. Hope some of them make it through gun season that started today. Its been somewhat of a rough season and i wont be able to hunt until Dec 15!! Thats when christmas break starts for this college boy... Srroy for the long post, just thought i would share my stories...

Thanks for the input everyone. We are still in the early stages of this process, I just thought I would ask around and see what everyone thought.

have you thought of trying a controlled burn on the area that is being overtaken by the grass? This may allow you to eliminate it and at the same time help you if plan to put a food plot in that area
-
Do you think there is minimum? or would you say that depends on the surrounding land?
-
Yeah I cant wait to get her shooting. I'm sure she will pick it up relatively quickly. Thanks for all the info.Christmas is coming up and I might suprise her with it.

So my dad and I are looking to purchase some acreage here in the near future and was wondering what some of you would look for when buying land and how many acres do you think is enough to hold a solid amount of deer. i already plan on putting some food plots in and a water hole if necessary. Let me know what you think

I wouldn't give up just yet. Hang in there ya never know what might wonder under your tree. It only takes one remember? i read this book on deer hunting not to long ago and they had an equation for success. Confidence+Concentration x Confidence = Success... Good luck to you hope you dont call it quits just yet.

My prayers are sent out for both you and your friends family. Life can be tough sometimes but sometimes it gives you more incentive to live your life to the fullest. God doesn't place things infront of us that we are unable to handle. Hang in there

Thats the bow I had been looking at. what weight does your wife shoot? I know that my girlfriend will shoot a lower weight in the beginning because I want her to develope good shooting mechanics. What would you consider to be a good draw weight for women when hunting?
-
During the offseason many people dont practive certain shooting angles. One often overlooked is the shot that is directly under your stand. this shot is not often thought of when practicing in the off season
-
where was this picture taken?
-
you cant really go wrong with a tending grunt... as for the antlers it depends on the area you're hunting
-
thanks for the feedback everyone. I've been leaning towards getting her a compound anyway I just thought i would get some more input.

So i took my girlfriend of 2 years out bow hunting with me lastnight and as far as i can tell she enjoyed it. Saw a few deer mostly does that stayed about 80-100 yards out. It took her a little persuasion to get her to climb up in the stand but once she did she was fine. She took her hunter safety course last january and I want to get her into bow hunting. Should i start her with a crossbow or compound bow? She has shot my compound before but needs one that fits her a littile better. Any suggestions on bow types?

I've had some success with it. Called in a lot of smaller bucks and a 120 in 8point with it last season. I like to use it and mix in a tending grunt here and there. Catch em at the right time and they come in on a string.
