  1. Two more of us from Central Pa (Lancaster County) are headed out to Morrowville, in Washington County (North central / Northeast). We will be hunting 4/21, 22, & 23. A high school football buddy of mine, some guy named Rob Keck, said there so many turkeys in Kansas that even Ray Charles could shoot a bird or two. I hope he's right about the quantity...pulling the trigger will just be a bonus. Good luck guys, and I'm hoping you have safe travels, and safe hunts!! Joe
  2. Turkeygirl: After reading enough tidbits on forums from folks that have used them, and then TruGlo reviews by both Cabelas and Bass Pro consumers, I bought the TruGlo Red Dot and a Weaver base for my 835. I'm sure there are other bases that will work also, but from what others indicated, the Weaver would work fine; and it has. Although it was only put on a couple of weeks ago, quite a bit of shooting has taken place since then. It was very easy to sight in, and after that it was just a matter of determining which load to go with, since I also changed chokes at the same time. I'm sure you will enjoy it, and good luck this year! Joe

    locator call

A couple of questions for you "more experienced hunters": the area I hunt will periodically have quite a few crows cruising the area. I would assume that the gobblers become less responsive to crow calls when there is an abundance of real crows consistantly in the area. What have others experienced? Next: In reference to hawk calls, do they appear to work any better at a certain period of the day than during other times of the day? And if there were crows frequently in your area that the gobblers might have become more accustomed to, did the hawk call work better then? Finally: concerning peacock calls. Do these calls work (consistantly) in areas that do not have peacocks, where you rely on the shrill sound? Thanks guys/gals. Your input is greatly appreciated!! HUNT SAFELY!!
  4. Gee Grant...a couple of us are headed "out there" in April. Hope you push a whole mess of 'em up to the Morrowville area (Washington County). Since we each have 2 tags, I'd hate for them to go to waste!! Good luck thining the flock this year!!! Hey njbowhunter27...like some others said about other states, come on over to Pa. There are plenty of State Game Lands around, and with a little bit of research, you can take that new gear for some hikes!! I hope you get many chances to get out...even if it's without a weapon! There really is more to it than pulling the trigger! But I really do agree with Strut10! Like so many others seem to be doing (though for other reasons), move out of NJ!! Joe
  5. Strut10: I found that to be very true with my gun! The Supremes did have a very good pattern. And supporting what you stated previously, the Winchester Elites placed more pellets on the paper, with an even better pattern! Joe

    MAD Calls?

Sorry about this, but let me be the first to ask... what shell and choke combo did he use on that slate? And how baddly does it kick?? Sorry...it's just been one of those days!!! (Hey, life's WAY too short to be serious all of the time!!) Joe
  7. Punkinslinger I understood what you meant, and I really wasn't targeting that statement, 'cause Hevi's aren't cheap either. The statement was more to head off someone just flat out suggesting to stay away from the "more expensive loads", simply because they are more expensive. Yes, any load can kill a turkey...given the right situation. Of course the choice of what to use is personal, but hopefully it's made after patterning enough different loads to see the difference between them, and being able to determine what patterns better out of YOUR gun.. Unfortunately (?) MY gun does pattern better with the "more expensive loads". But when the time comes, I don't care what it cost me when I pull that trigger! Whatever y'all use, shoot straight, and carefully!! Joe
  8. I tried several brands and price ranges of ammo when patterning my 835 and I found the Wincheste Elite worked best for MY gun. I know myself, and I'm sure most others, invest a lot of time, and spend a BUNDLE on all types of equipment for the opportunity to harvest a gobbler. When it comes time to pull the trigger, I want to be firing off a round that is going to be putting out a great pattern. And at that point, I don't care if the round cost $4.00. If I had saved money by shooting a "cheap round", but it injured rather than harvested the gobbler, I didn't save a darn thing, and I'd have to live with that image for years to come! Paying more for the right ammo for Turkey hunting is an easy rational for me. After all, it's not like shooting trap!! Good Luck!! Joe
