What do you guys/gals do over the summer and winter to get ready for next spring?
I figure I'll read some books and practice my calling somewhat but is there anything else?
I've got a Cabela's one that was $100.00. I only do a few deer a year so it works pretty good. One thing I thought of is I turn my grinder off and on while using it and they have a foot pedal that a little expensive, so this time of year you can get a foot switch for your Christmas tree. I figure it would work for the grinder as well and its alot chaper.
Walmart had the 1.3 for $50.00 each. I picked up two. At that price I wasn't worried too much about theft and I thought I could use the cheap cameras to locate the deer then use my good camera after I have pinpointed where they are. I'm having problem with night pictures I get no flash, I get the picture but it's all dark.
I got a small lease in Belmont Co., Was hunting Tuesday and had a small 3point chasing a doe. She crashed thru some heavy brush near my stand. She went on down the hill and he couldn't she where she went, I used my bleat can and he came right in.
I'm just getting started with mouth calls, I like the two reed ones.
I'm making pretty good sounds with the Quaker boy old boss hen and the HS Strut ez rasp and boss hen.
Do turkeys roost in the same area in the spring as they do in the fall? If I'm out hunting this fall and find a roosting tree could I expect the turkeys to be in the same area in the spring?
Congrats,
I've been out four of my six days off. Last Wednesday morning I was in the woods and set up by 5am. As first light broke I let out with a soft yelp. there was a gobble right behind me so I didn't do a thing for about a half an hour or so and called again. nothing I figured he moved on so I started calling every ten minutes or so till about 8:30. I needed to stand and stretch. The stupid turkey was roosted in the tree I was leaning against and when I stood up he flew off down the hill. Looked to be a Jake.
I'll have to wait till my next days off to get back out.
Well, the first week of season here has been a wet one. I don't do rain so I've been out three of the five days I've been on vacation. I've been out before first light and have turkeys gobbling but haven't been able to call any close enough to get a shot at. Tomarrow is my last vacation days so I'm hoping the rain holds off and one of those birds decided to come in.
Opening morning here in WV, Im working noon to midnight. I start vacation Wednesday till Monday. Hopefully I'll connect with one, but it is supposed to start raining Tuesday night. :-(
