Im glad in Bama we can hunt March 15 -April 30 and no tags. We have a 5 gobbler limit. I dont know how ya'll handle those short seasons and bad weather.

That is pretty much the type of land I hunt. I hunt out of a tripod along shooting lanes that I have cut. Dont cut the pines. We also drive with dogs in these thickets.

Usually in south Alabama deer antlers are pearl white. I think it has something to do with the sandy soil. I hunt a place in the river swamp. It has very fertile soil and the deer have darker horns.

I have done better:D

I hate windy days. You cant hear, turkeys cant hear, and turkeys seem to be spooky. My best mornings are when a big storm comes through the night before and clears out right before daylight!

Yes, my 870 express mag is camo'ed in realtree. Its a go-getter

Sounds like you need to kill him. You dont want him passing his genes to offspring!

On the roost I call very little. If he hears you, he knows where you are. If he wants to come he will come. On the ground I get call a little more. If he is gobbling alot and getting closer, I slow down on calling. Sometimes they will hang up if you call to much. If he isnt gobbling alot to crows etc. but is gobbling to me. I get a little aggressive with calling. Sometimes I will call to him just to to see where he is. This is my experiance. Just get out their and hunt. You will learn alot more by experiance!

40 is my max. The fun of turkey hunting is calling them in Close. I dont understand why people want to shoot a turkey 80 yards away. Turkey hunting is a game of stratagie. Its about the chase not killing.

At 3:00am Jones county was getting ROCKED! A big limb fell out of a big oak and took the corner of my house and the power lines down with it.

Man, we are in the same boat. Where do you live. Im from Jacksom,Al about a hour North of Mobile. The best thing I have found is to not call at all. Learn this turkeys pattern and set up a ambush. If that doesnt work, try to hunt later in day. By then then hens have left the gobbler and he will be looking for more luvin. If that doesnt work ambush him on his way to the roost. I love these kinds of birds. They make you a better hunter. Enjoy!

The other morning a yote ruined my turkey hunt. 3 1/2 #6s swarmed him at 40 yards. He didnt take another step.

Rye grass will grow anywhere..Last fall it was growing in my truck bed!

Gobbling turkeys will make people do stuff that they dont normaly do.

I can deal with ticks but, I always find redbugs in the strangest places.

He gobbles from the tree and you're setup...now what?

You just didnt sound sexy enough:D you still might have called to much. If the gobbler is like me he hates a talkative(nagging) female.............Seriously, he probaly was a mature gobbler. They usualy expect hens to go to them. Or he might have been pressured from someone else -
Im not a forester yet but I will be in another semester of school.... If I were you "managing for wildlife, not timber", I would simply clear-cut the scrub oak. Most likely the trees are growing to close together, therefore allowing no sunlight to hit the ground. Thus allowing no growth from the forest floor. Clear cut it.. This will turn into a deer heaven when all the new tender growth sprouts..Im not familiar with what trees you would want to plant back since its a diff area.....Ask all of us southern guys about clearcut hunting...Its great....just my 2cents

Simply im a deer hunter..Kill a few does with my bow..Then try to kill average or larger bucks.

Born and raised in LA. "Lower Alabama"..Not even Chuck Norris could take me away from God's Country.

Cruising timber is when a forester appraises timber. Its a rather complex system.Sorry for the confusion. The job is for a timber management company up there. Again how is the fishing up there?

I have never worked with labs, but I do hunt squirrel and coon dogs. You cannot go wrong with Tri-Tronics. They are tough and dependable. In my opinion "bark collars" work great. Dogs simply learn not to bark. They will get smart and know when they are not wearing their bark collar. You can all so buy a dummy collar. It feels just like a bark collar but it does not work. It just makes the dog feel like they are wearing the real thing. The remote control shock collar is great also. Especially when you are working your dog in the field. If I were training a dog not to bark I would got with the bark collar. The bark collar still shocks them when you are not at home

Hey guys. I just put in a resume for a summer job cruising timber near Middlesboro,Kentucky. A inside source told me that I will most likely be chosen. I am really excited and nervous. It will be a big change from Lower Alabama. I read that the land I will be cruising on has 80% slopes. Wow! How is the fishing up their. Any small creeks to wade for smallmouth or trout. What do ya'll fish with. Thanks!
