Going to Elk hunt in Colorado late August. I have been told it is difficult to call them that time of year. Any tips on calling and strategies to bow hunt that time of year.

I am planning to fly up north to hunt. I contacted several airlines and priced tickets and they averaged about $275. When I asked about checking my bow, they told me it would cost about 125 each way just for my archery equipment. Has anyone experienced this and is there any other good option out there? The bowcase is about 5 inches over the limit to be considered regular size and goes from around $20 to over $100 to take it.
