Gonna pick up a box of Nosler Custom Trophy Grade 85 gr Partition factory loads. From what I've seen it's a wicked little bullet. Separated lead core on the bottom for the penetration, soft easy expanding upper lead core.

I shoot a 80 grain Remington hollow point hand loads and have since I started hunting. Devastating little bullet for the high lung or neck shots but if you hit them low or clip the shoulder you have 0 blood trail to follow. DRT every time if you put it where it belongs. I had scope mount problems 2 years ago with a loose screw so the scope would wander and lost several deer before I completely took the scope and mounts off and put it back on. I can shoot fine but that made me loose confidence in that little bullet cause I can't stand not recovering my animals. I'm down to 7 rounds so I have to load some up. What do y'all shoot out of your .243? I was have heard good things about the Hornady SST 95 gr. Not really sure what else is out there. My shots can be from 10 yards to 175 yards. With the .243 It's the gun I take into the woods with me for close range shots due to the size of the rifle, so mostly 10-40 yard shots in the woods. Our deer range from 80 lbs for a yearling doe and up to 150 for a big buck live weight. I'll be shooting it out of a Winchester Model 670 (basically a economy M70) -- it's a push feed -- will that mess up the tip of the SST?

Finally found a topo of the property I hunt online. I matched them up with Google Earth's pictures as close as I could. The first one is the aerial picture without any markings, the second has property lines, permanent stands, the 2 ponds, and the fairly grown up roads running through the property all marked. Does anything stand out to you based on terrain that merits sitting in a climber for a day or two? I like the area bordering the neighbors pond, seems like it'd funnel them through there. Heard a good number of deer walking around the C shaped field there the last 2 years when sitting in the permanent stand, they're not comfortable going across it until dark. No food plots planted this year because before this weekend we hadn't had any measurable rain in 4 weeks. Gonna be using a muzzleloader with iron sights for the 10 day ML season, wanna set up in some thicker stuff with a 20-40 yard shot. Key: Red - rough property line Yellow - can't hunt these fields Blue - pond -- creek is on the topo map, it's dry due to the lack of rain this summer but it should perk back up here this fall Gray - enter the woods here Green - road/ATV trails, lightly used by vehicles so deer use 'em too. I will walk in on these. Light blue square - neighbors pond that isn't on GE for some reason. It's close to the property line and has some hardwoods around it. Light blue Xs - permanent stands Plain aerial map: Marked aerial map: Topo map: I appreciate any help. I wasn't able to get out and scout due to my CFS and fibromyalgia but I got me a new climber that, God willing, I'll be putting some hours in this fall.

Is there an affordable pistol out there
Zero replied to RangerClay's topic in Hand Guns & Accessories
Agree 100%. If overpenetration is an issue, look at #4 or so shot, not 00 buck. With #4s, range is not an issue, rounds flying through the house towards your family is. -
Go ahead and ask for your league's prize money now...

Last fawns I saw was 2 weeks ago, still solid spots but they should be faded by October round here. Never seen anything with spots while hunting.

You pay for the name when you buy one from a store...but that's probably negated when you have one built as they want to make money too. Building your own will save you some cash, maybe you know someone who can do it? Once you pick compatible parts it's mostly plug stuff together. Since you don't know anything about it I doubt you need anything more than $600, unless someone else is using it, too. If you'll be running large programs, gaming, ect you'll want to get a better one (read - more expensive) than if you just play minesweeper and browse the internet...

Hunt where the does are and you don't need a decoy! Never had much success with plastic/2D ones myself.

Something's not right, put a bore sighter in it and look at the square target, make sure it really is and isn't just cocked to the side. If it's off and horizontal is flat, talk with the manufacturer.
-
If that's what you want then go for it! All that matters is your confidence and ability, 99% of guns shoot better than the people behind them can and anything .223 (arguably smaller) and up will cleanly take a deer if you put it where it needs to go.

Depends if you can find the brass and a good bullet that's in your price range for the .257. I agree on .25 cal rifles being deadly on deer...so many people have a .30 cal+ mentality...it's a whitetail not an elk.

I would look at a Henry lever action in a beefier round... .454+ I may pick one up this year after I nail one with the S&W .500 at bow range.

Only problem with having 3 starters on one team is if they get stomped, you'll lose the week. Maybe pull a 2 for 1 trade to open a roster spot then pickup Olsen, or James Davis if he's there. Lots of hype around Davis, will eventually be starting for Cleveland, and it's expected to be soon. If you don't use wavier priority, you should recommend it. Not fair for the guys who can get to the computer first to get the best pickups. In my leagues, the worst guy from last year gets the first wavier pickup, then so on. When you use your pick, you go to the bottom of the list. Waviers clear 2 days after the games so everyone gets their claims in then anyone who didn't get picked up is a FA and you don't have to use a pick. Good luck.

Pretty pup! Hide ANYTHING you don't want chewed! Even had my yellow lab chew up a book from the library.

Haven't killed a bear but have dropped several deer. It's one of the few things that actually work as advertised.
-
Your WRs are fine, you should go deep in the playoffs.

.17 HMR or a bolt action .410. The .410 holds the best pattern I've ever seen.

I'm thinking let him walk for another year. Won't hurt your genetics to wait and see, remember the fawn gets half his genetics from his mama.
-
Yeah they're not meant as a plinking gun, they're a last resort weapon, that 7' or less lethal threat range. Still, go with what feels the best and what fits you.
-
Maybe you left too much scent, or they're just slowing down on the minerals due to the time of year.
-
.243, .25-06, 7mm/08, light .308s, ect will all work. .243 is a deer killing round. I've never had one run, at all, except from a heart shot. 80 grain hollow points. Broadside lung or base of the neck.
-
Pick up a few different boxes or borrow a few from a friend if you know anyone with one and see which shoots the best.
-
Plenty of companies who can cut you one (and fit it if you don't want to yourself) from a block of wood, no stock needed as they have the dimensions in the computer. Had it done for my LC Smith 20 gauge SxS.
-
If you reload, Remington's .30 cal 125 grain PSP is absolutely deadly. More than enough bullet for a whitetail. Lung shots and my favorite base of the neck shot and they drop like a rock.

Thanks guys, didn't make it out but tomorrow is supposed to be 76! Huge difference when it's going from 90+ down to 76... Will get out after the dew burns off for sure.
