  1. great deer and a great hunt. Congrats!
  2. Great buck! Glad to see our team picking it up this week.
  3. Went to work this morning and after getting there the wife emailed me and told me that she forgot to tell me she was busy the rest of the week and would be gone this weekend so I would have to watch the boys so hunting would be out of the question until next week. I think she waited until I got to work on purpose. So I made a point to get out of work early, headed to the woods. My camo was at home so I hit the tree in my work clothes. The wind was a pretty stiff wind out of the WSW at about 10-15 mph. I made a last minute decision to sit in a stand that I haven't sat in 4 years. The wind died down as the sun went below the horizon. I was settled into a big cedar on the edge of a freshly picked corn field. I had a young doe come out early but got kicked out of the field by two partridge. Shortly later the deer started poring out into the field. I saw this buck coming in from behind me, he hung up right under my stand for about 25 minutes. I think he was licking my steps, I could have dropped my arrow on him. He stepped out into the field, I let him get about 5 yards away. I put my 20 yard pin high on his back and released. My arrow hit right where I was aiming. I took out 1 lung and his heart. My arrow burried in the ground right under him. He ran about 35 yards into the field, stopped turned in a circle and went down. No tracking job needed. Not my biggest buck but, my best buck with my bow. Both, my boys were excited. Both wanted to help with the field dressing. Got to love when the young ones show so much interest in the outdoors.
  4. Great buck Rhino!!! Team 8 is poring the coals on em this week. Here is my newest submission. 9 pointer tagged him tonight. Not my biggest buck but my best with a bow.
  5. 1.) find yourself a good pair of moisture wicking base layer / long jons 2.) Polypro over the base layer 3.) Fleece or wool layer 4.) gortex outer / make sure the gortex you have has vents. Your 3 & 4th layer you don't want tight or super baggy. But enough space to allow a little air in between layers. The air will help insulate. The gortex will stop the wind dead plus keep the wet out. The best boots I have found are military Mickey Mouse/extreme cold weather boots. Big Rubber boots with an air valve on the sides. Not the greatest to walk in but your feet stay warm. Natural wools or wool mixes are going to give you the most warmth.
  6. Either your buddy is a midget or that is one heck of a deer. The trail cam pics do not do that buck any justice! Great looking deer! Congrats to your buddy!
  7. Sure has been a rough season so far. Sat last night only to have a trespasser come walking thru. I'm glad I was there though. He had several of my neighbors trail cams that he was trying to make off with. I think he passed the deer he spooked threw when I spoke to him from 25 feet up in my best drill instructor voice and then sank an arrow in the ground behind his skinny butt. He dropped every thing he was carrying and ran like a scared rabbit. He sounded like a freight train crashing thru the corn field. Called my neighbor and returned his cameras. He told me one of the cameras was only 4 days old.....:bang: Hopefully that was the last time he comes around. Now I get to go look to see what is missing of mine......So much for staying out of the bedding areas. On a good note all the corn got cut on my property yesterday and today. So now it's on like donkey kong! Good luck guys! Congrats on the does Slash.
  8. Pretty decent blind. Better than most. I have a Ground Max. I also got the Ameristep bonecollector blind last year and like it better than the Primos. Size wize they are very close. Not quite tall enough stand straight up in, but tall enough to stretch if needed. I like the fabric on the Ameristep better as well as the windows. The windows in the Ameristep is buttons so they can be opened & closed quietly versus zippers in the Primos. Both are around the same price. So it is a horse apiece.
  9. Great job! Great looking buck!
  10. It's been a couple years since I hunted Kansas, I hunted units 9, 10 & 14. Your timing should be spot on for the rut. My best week was the week before Thanksgiving. I believe the terrain you are going to be in is about the area that the terrain starts to move from hardwoods to more of the plains. But a mix of both. Concentrate on the breaks, fence rows, creek beds. Have some good binos for the open areas. Hunt the does. My advice, take your climber with some climbing steps like mentioned above. Something like the Ameristep Non typical rapid rails. 3 independant sections, incase you can't find a straigt tree. You can always use the steps to hang your climber. So that way you don't have to haul around a climber & a hang on. Good luck! Keep us posted.
  11. went out tonight to move and put up a couple more stands. It appears that my neighbor thinks it is ok to hunt on my property.....gggrrrrrr. found 3 stands on my property. All 100 yards or so from the property line...funny thing is that the line is posted like every 100 feet and they are his signs. Must have been in there pretty heavy by the looks of it. Cause all the traffic is moved to where my stands are at. So I'll hold off saying anything for a couple weeks :pop: hoping to get out this weekend.
  12. Made it out this weekend. The wind was pretty sucky, swirling and spinning. Saw quite a few including a tall 8 that would score upper 130's, he was at about 65 yards. Maybe this weekend.....
  13. might be the same deer. I'm thinking 3.5 this year.
  14. I've been using Thunderhead 100's. but I am thinking about using Ramcat's.
  15. Regardless of what he scores, great mount and buck! 161"
  16. man that sucks! That is, was an awesome boat I'm sure as Bass Cat makes some great boats! Sorry to hear about that.
  17. I had a great horned owl try and rip my face off once. I was just sitting in my tree stand 25' up in the air. I was slowly stretching my fingers and he must of thought it was a squirrel or something. That is when I learned that a 6' tall 220 lbs man scream mixed with the smell of crap will stop a great horned owl in mid air. On another note my brothers and I have been known to plant a special grey squirrel that a friend mounted for us in the corner of our friends blinds. For early morning suprises. It is standing on its hind legs front legs stretched out with little claws, yellow eyes, and fangs. And it's a male squirrel. I think there is a few bullet holes in a few shacks! :toot:
  18. Team 8 ....the Clique question So I meant to bring this up before the season started. But, I've been busy. Anyways, I wanted to ask if every one would be up for me donating a custom hunting knife, hand made by my father and a custom wooden grunt tube to the biggest buck/ highest score on team 8 (only team 8). Or maybe splitting it up. Knife to 1st, grunt tube to 2nd. If it's me I defer to the next person. I would of course probably have to clear it with the moderators. Thoughts, questions????? Yes, No! Mike P.S. 92xj the buck you shot wouldn't count cause you posted it before I offered this..... :poke:
  19. I'm gonna hike up my skirt, and pull an all dayer tomorrow. 6 am bass tourney (last one for the year) 3:00 appointment with the woods. If I see the big doe that ruined my hunt earlier this week. She is gonna meet the buissness end of my xx78 superslam. Maybe there will be some bone roaming around tomorrow too. Good luck to all.
  20. Made it out for the first time tonight. Had 7 does come by at about 8 to 15 yards. Had another deer come in behind me, didn't get to see what it was as it was behind some dead falls. 19 turkeys, a porkie, a red tailed hawk, and about 300 squirrels! Weather is starting to get colder! So I'll be hitting the woods now.
  21. Season started 2 weeks ago. Have yet to make it out. Won't be making it out this weekend either....I have to head back into work tonight at 3:00 to do some training with new people on the night shift. Then Sunday the Wife got tickets to the Packer game. I'll be making it out next week. Even if I have to quit work... Good luck every one. Mike
