  1. Well at the moment I have a A-bolt and 2 742s in 30-06, a Traditions 50 cal, a Rem 700 243, and a ruger super balckhawk hunter in 44 mag. and I have had a 270 and a 300WM in the past.I have a few spots to hunt that are really thick and here at the house if i shoot one i dont want it going off of the bluff (75 ft vertical with 2 spots for me to go up and down). I am thinking about a larger caliber for pure knock down power. Right now I am leaning towards putting a slug barrel on my 870 12 ga or buying a Marlin 45/70. What do you guys think?
  2. Has anybody used .458 45/70 bullets with a sabot in a 50 cal? I was thinking that some of the 300gr or so HPs might do pretty good on whitetails. Any thoughts? Thanks Jason
  3. It is a Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk Hunter in 44 mag. Looks nothing like a redhawk or a super redhawk.
  4. QAD Hunter: best $56.00 ive spent on archery gear in a while. I had a Drop Zone for 4 years but it developed a "twang". My wife uses a Hostage rest and we have seen no adverse effects of it. I suggest the QAD Hunter
  5. I used to shoot 245gr powerbelt aero tips ahead of 150 grains if pyrodex pellets, but am switching to 300gr 44cal Hornady XTPs this year. I am also switching to loose powder so that i can play with the charge a little more. I never killed a deer with the powerbelts, but after reading some of the reviews I didnt want to experence what i was reading. Hopefully Ill get to report back on the Hornadys in a couple of weeks.
  6. If your new model is like mine it should have two places in each side of the barrel and two in the top. I have included pics of mine. I have the ruger bases and a Tasco 1.25-4 x 28 that i had on mine. It was very stable and has never moved. I decided that i liked open sights better for the close quarters that i hunt with this gun. Hope this helps Good luck and GOD BLESS
  7. Alabama is $24.00. We have a honor system that is 3 buck a year only with at least 3 points on one side.
  8. I bought mine at the gun dealer where i bought the pistol. I would think that midway or blackhawk would carry them. Or go to Houge's website and do a dealer search for your area. Good luck and GOD BLESS
  9. Alabama: $10.00 for CC Permit, $10.00 yearly renewal, NO Class Required (yet)
  10. Congrats on picking up a good gun. I've got a SS 7 1/2" SBH Hunter in 44mag with the Houge monogrip. The whole package with a Leuopold scope and 2 boxes of ammo out the door was right at $900. The Houge monogrip was the second best investment of the whole deal. This grip cuts the percieved recoil in about half. Great shooting gun and deadly accurate to 125 yards. Enjoy and GOD BLESS
  11. Anybody got any experence with these? I am shooting Power Belts now, but the more i read about them the more i think im gonna try something else. Thanks in advance and GOD BLESS
  12. My first deer rifle was a 270, it killed a many deer. I then bought the browning '06 and have killed many with it also. I have been thinking about the 300 and 325 wsm, but 40-50$ a box seems a little rediculas. I will probably go back with a '06 for simplicitys sake, but at the same time would like to have something that would reach across a big bean field if needed. I have so much of a diversity of terrain to hunt i almost need a few different rifles to cover the different needs. Thanks for the input and please keep it coming. You never know what will strike my interest or be a help to someone else. Thanks and GOD BLESS
  13. I am thinking about buying a new deer rifle for either me or my wife. She has pretty much taken over my Browning Abolt 30-06. She wants to stay with a "big" rifle as the recoil doesnt bother her. I got her to shoot a Rem 700 in 7mm08 and she liked it except for it was a smaller round than the 30-06. I am leaning toward just letting her have the Browning and buying me a TC Encore Pro Hunter. So my question is what does everyone shoot for whitetail deer and what has bee your experence with that particular round. Most shots will be within 200 yards at Alabama deer (150-175lbs). Thanks and good hunting this season. GOD BLESS
  14. My dad recently bought a Glock 22c in 40 cal but licked the XDM in 40 cal so much that he went back and bought it also. He loves it and so far has had no failures or malfunctions. As far as a 9mm not being sufficent for self defence, Bull. There have been more men die from a 9mm or a 38spl than probably any other handgun around. I personaly prefer Glock in 45acp, but carry a 9x18 Marakov as a CCW. Either one will get the job done as long as the offender isnt wearing a vest, in which case only a head shot would be acceptable.
  15. some pics i got this past Janurary here on mine and my father n laws place. The last one is the one i missed the last sunday of the 08-09 rifle season.
  16. Yea there are some places that hold some decent deer, UNFORTUNATLY I dont have many of those places to hunt. We do have some good deer here at the house on my dadnlaws place, but it is all cutover mountain land that is so thick that a rabbit has to pick it way around. I got some good picks of a few bucks last year and missed one. Maybe this year.
  17. My father in law has killed many deer with a Ruger semi auto 44 mag rifle. 2 of which were a 8 point and a 10 point. Both were in the 200 lb range and both dropped in their tracks. I have a Ruger super blackhawk in 44 mag, but havent killed a deer with it yet. He was shooting the white box Winchesters until somebody broke into his house and stold all of his guns and food. I shoot Winchester Platinun tips. Good luck this hunting season and GOD BLESS
  18. Cheap shouldn't be any part of the decision when it comes to your safey. If you cant justify spending $300 or so on a treestand that is proven to be the best of the best, then you should just hunt from the ground, and not take your chances with a cheaper stand. With that said and out; I am 6'2" 270lbs and have no problems with my viper not being big enough. If I were to buy a new stand it would however be the Summit 180. Not just for the little bit bigger size, but also for it being able to turn the seat around. Just my opnion. Good luck this hunting season and GOD BLESS
  19. I live about 25 miles southeast of Huntsville, in Marshall county.

  21. Does anybody have any experence with the G5 TEKAN? I am thinking about trying them, but wanted to see if anybody had used them, and what your opnion on them is. Thanks Jason
  22. I was shooting with some friends not long after i bought my new bow and this guy was hyping up Matthews and somebody asked what kind of bow I was shooting and I said it just an illusion, and it sorta stuck in my head. I shoot a Browning Illusion: 29", 70lbs, Easton XX78 2314, Muzzy 3 blade 100s.
  23. I am new here and I just wanted to say hello to everyone. My family and I live in north Alabama. We have a couple hundred acres of mountain land and river bottom land that we deer hunt. Thanks for letting me join and I look forward to getting to know everyone. By the way, I ENVY all of you guys who live in the "Booner states". I wish we had deer like that here and I hope to be able to hunt in the midwest someday. Thanks again; Jason
