  1. Nope, not chiggers! Those teeny, tiny "seed" ticks! Ate my butt up!
  2. Awesome story and congrats to both of you! I want to do that some day!
  3. Ya'll should've been here in southside VA! It was a weird feeling. You heard it first, then everything started shaking like heck. Lasted 30 -35 seconds. Then we had a good aftershock at 8 PM.
  4. Went out Sat and switched out SD cards w/a buddy of mine. Got this pic. Was very well suprised!
  5. Went out Sat. afternoon to hang stands. I wear my rubber boots and try to stay as scent free as possible. We'll, I got plumb ATE up by tiny, tiny ticks! Crawled up my jeans and onto my waist line and back. Looks like from my waist to shoulder blades, front and back - measles!!!! Do you guys spray your clothing for ticks when hanging stands? I have been in the woods for over 42 yrs. and never had this! Had to use a butter knife and razor to get them off! 150 bites at least!!!!!
  6. I went to a "clearance place" here in VA - Ollie's. Sorta like a Big Lots. And they had rubber-coated 8 inch long screw in hangers for 50 cents each! Got 30 of them and have them at all my stand sites. I also carry 2 in my pack - 36" and a 12". I always hang my bow.
  7. As far as talking w/warden and landowner - doesn't do ANY good. If dogs are dropped on property where is is permissible - they can run ANYWHERE. Nothing I can legally do if the "stray" onto my property.
  8. Here in VA there is NOTHING one can do to stop dogs from running deer on your property if they were let loose on property where it was OK. Unless you erect a fence! It really burns my rear when I got to the trouble to create plots, add supplements, create mineral licks and try to grow 5 y.o. deer and have someone else benefit! Oh I get into heated discussions with the dog owners, but legally there is nothing I can do. Heck, here a dog owner can trespass w/o weapons to retrieve a dog without my permission!!!!!
  9. I live in the woods and have a three-target range with 2 stands right behind the house. It is completely shaded, all oaks and 15 degrees cooler than in the fields! It has been hot, but I've been shooting at least three evenings a week. I've been wearing the safety harness in the stands and get a little sweaty - but it will be like this come mid-Sept. Heck, just the other evening, from my covered deck, I shot during a downpour. Quit after all the practice arrows were in targets!
  10. Having a good hatch here in Virginia. Got 2 hens at work with 14 between them. Got 2 in backyard with 16 and have seen 3 hens on a farm I hunt with at least 10! Very good year for us!
  11. First, the intro to this - Last year I got sole rights to a 100 acre farm. Plenty of oaks, corn on about 30 acres, I've put in several plots and there are plenty of deer. Harvested 2 does and let all the bucks seen walk. I am in a part of VA where dogs are allowed for the entire gun season. I am a stand hunter and the landowner does not want dogs on the farm, but there is a club that leases next door and they don't care if there dogs stray. My dilemma is I have an really nice 4 1/2 y.o. 8 pointer that was a 6 last year and he's got a buddy that will be very nice next year. The 8 is my target this season. There are 2 more lesser bucks running with these two that given time will be decent bucks. The neighbor club will take anything with horns! They took out a nice buck I let walk to grow for this year. Anyone else out there that has this problem also? What do you do?
  12. I've got one farm where the owner requires me to take 2 does before any bucks. Another farm we have taken only does for 2 years now. And I live near a Town that has an Urban Archery season for does that is basically mid-Sept thru March! Last season I took 5 does and let every buck walk. Here in VA doe tags are pretty much unlimited, I've got 6 left over from last year that are valid until 11/21/11! I have NO problem taking a doe whenever with any weapon. It will have to be a 150" plus buck for me to kill a buck. Does taste SOOOOO good!
  13. Nice Very nice "backyard" buck in anyone's backyard! Congrats. Got one similar to that out back here, just haven't connected yet. congrats again!
  14. Sat. I had a good shot at a decent 6 pt. but due to the bulk of my clothing I couldn't get on him like I wanted. I passed on the shot. It was one of the coldest mornings yet, 26 degrees so I was layered up pretty well. My question - what is the least bulky clothing system/jacket I can get that won't restrict me? I am looking for clothing that will keep me warm down into the single digits. I'd like info on layering systems (i.e. Underarmour) all the way to a good outer shell. Thanks for your help!
  15. Good Job In this day and age where a lot of kids don't get the parental supervision they need or have parents that don't care - it is GREAT to see how you are teaching your child and raising him right. You both did the right thing by telling the entire truth and you both seemed like you were willing to accept whatever the warden handed to you. That is being a MAN and a responsible hunter. Hey, we all make mistakes - but how we handle them and what we learn from them are what counts. I applaud you for the way you handled the situation, and how you are teaching your child!!!
