  1. Thanks guys! I buy Damascus by the billet, trace, cut/grind from there. Once I finish my filework, I'll send it to out to be heat treated. I'm installing an oven this weekend so I can do my own heat treating very soon! Got ahold of an old art class oven for pottery that goes up to 2,200 degrees so it will be more than enough. Yeah, that blade flew off the buffing wheel and nearly took me down with it so I think it may be the last guthook I do.
  2. Thanks dh and congrats on the pending wedding - exciting stuff! Tell the folks in upstate hello - my mom lives in Corning and I always look forward to some summer fishing in the Finger Lakes!!
  3. This is a custom guthook I finished up last week, I endearingly dubbed "The Texas Diamondback" because it nearly bit me twice! ....also, the theme of the spine filework on the back and Texas Mesquite handle with inlayed Texas State Seal - This blade is made from 416 layers of damascus steel heat treated to 58 HRC and is 9 3/4" OAL. Thanks for looking, asking $295
  4. Amazing! Can't wait to see it finished
  5. If anyone is interested, we'll include the shipping and sheath for $375tyd Thanks for taking a look
  6. After much debate, Nathan convinced me to sell this one - I was hoping to keep this as my personal carry knife but no luck - for those looking for a good gift idea or personal knife, I hope you enjoy! I call this one the "Western Hunter" Damascus blade. The handle is made from Amboyna Burl (from S.E. Asia) and has a lot of swirls in it. Thong hole and a large mosaic pin surrounded by 4 small mosaics throughout the handle. The hand file work on the back includes a cross and vine we reference from "I am the vine, you are the branches." Treated to an HRC rating of 59 for hardness and edge holding, this will be a hardy field carry that hopefully looks good too. The price is $375 or $405 with sheath plus shipping.
  7. with new leather sleeping bag:
  8. Thanks guys! I get some of my woods from Texas Knifemaker supplies and others I find through hardwood dealers online. Most of it, you have to see "potential" in because you really can't tell what it's going to look like until it hits the buffing wheel and then it really comes to life!
  9. Just wrapped up this skinning knife a fella asked me to make out of damascus and spalted maple with fancy pins and hand filed work along the entire spine and handle - pleased with the finished shape and this thing should cut like a razor - just wanted to share. I have a few similar blades I'm toying with right now and just trying to decide what woods/bone I want to use for the handles.
  10. new knife - amboyna burl with mosaics and damascus bladeI'm always amazed after you polish wood how beautiful the grain can be and the colors - I know it's grown by a creative designer Love amboyna so I tried it on this cowboy style hunting blade. It needs to go back to the cratex wheel and buffed again to get some fine scratches out. I did some filework that's suppose to symbolize "He is the branch, I am the vine" with the vine coming out of the cross - not sure it can be seen in this photo though. Thanks for the kind words all - it's a joy to work on these...
  11. Thanks guys!hammer - I get the damascus from a fella in Ontario - he doesn't do enough to sell in bulk but I get a note when he has some done and grab em up. Working on a "bird & trout" one right now I'm starting to see some potential for....will post a new pic when it's done...but here's one of two more almost finished up last night
  12. Thanks for the comments guys. Yes, this was from damascus I purchased made of 15N20 and 1095. Spalted maple is stabilized and AOL 8.5 inches. The mosaic pins I buy because that would be a full time job making those as it is. I found some others that are hollow in the middle that I've used on the following knife I call the Cowboy Skinner and did some rope file work - still fine tuning the finger slots with some more sanding to shape.
  13. Just finished up making this hunting knife and wanted to share....it was great fun working on and I'm pleased with the time we put into it. This will be my carry working knife....thanks for looking and any feedback is welcome if you have constructive criticism
  14. nice shooting, I bet that was a blast...never been close enough to take a turkey - well done!!
