1. Hey guys I just got a new lab puppy.. He's 8 weeks old.. This is my first adventure into hunting dogs.. I've only bird hunted a few times and have never owned a bird dog.. I got a really good pup with a really strong hunting line.. I know some people who have bought dogs from this kennel.. I am looking for some tips on what I should be doing to help with the training.. Thanks in advance!
2. One of the places I hunt. I set a ground blind on this barb wire fence row. It's almost to the corner of the field. To my north is the neighbor's property line. He's got winter wheat planted. To my west and south is an alfalfa field, and to my east is a line of timber. I set my blind up with the plan of deer coming from their beds (to the east) into the corner of the alfalfa field. When I set the blind up along the fence I noticed that the top string of barb wire could potentially hinder a shot into the woods. I thought "O it'll be ok" I think they'll come into the field and I can shoot there. Well on Friday I had a pretty good buck come thru the woods and I was unable to shoot because of the fence. I wasn't going to shoot because I knew there were bigger bucks on the property. I thought to myself at the time "I need to re-evaluate this set up. It's going to cost me". But I did nothing. Last night hunting it again I had a big buck come thru the woods. I'm not a great guesser but I would say close to a 140 inch 8 pt with kickers. He came by my blind at 20 yards. I couldn't get a shot because of the barb wire. I didn't want to risk it. Needless to say I was sick I should've listened to my original instincts and changed something. I paid the price for thinking "good enough". It won't happen again. I ordered a new blind, one tall enough to stand up in and take the fence out of the equation. I just wish I didn't make this decision the hard way. Live and (hopefully) learn! So the moral of the story: listen to your gut and never think good enough! It'll cost you in some way or the other. I guess that also applies to life in general. Thanks for reading my long post. Happy hunting!
3. Bowhunter arrow poll I have the Hoyt 6 arrow quiver. I carry 5 arrows. 3 with NAP Spitfires and 2 with NAP Hellrazors.
4. I was in Missouri most of last week hunting at my dad's place. Was looking for a buck we call Goggles. Deer movement was painfully SLOW! Saw a few small bucks and a few does but nothing big. Finally on Saturday morning I was able to break the Element in on a gobbler!
5. Bought a new bow I don't know a price yet. Still not sure what I'm gonna do. When I decide I'll put it on here
6. Bought a new bow Ya I love my Alphamax. I wouldn't have traded it for any bow but the Element. I didn't shoot the new spyder carbon, didn't want any extra conflict! I've thought about keeping it. I guess it'll depend on how much I can get out of it. I may try to sell it high and see what happens.
7. So our local archery shop had a great deal going on the Hoyt Carbon Element G3. I've wanted a carbon since they came out but I never could justify spending that $1,300 or so for the bare bow. But they had it for $900. So I bought it. Got the Hoyt 6 arrow quiver and Hoyt ultra-rest. Kept my G5 sights tho. I'm thrilled to have it! I'm gonna sell my Alphamax 32. If anyone is interested in it, let me know! Can't wait to get in the woods with it.
8. Question Thanks everyone. Appreciate it. We figured that he probably wasn't messed up too bad. Just wanted some more opinions. Btw nice hat!
9. Hey everyone. I have a question. My dad missed (clean miss. No hair or blood at all on his arrow) a buck we call Goggles last night. He was #1 on our hit list this year. I posted pics of him a few weeks back. My dad said the deer was about 45 yards when he shot. He's shooting a crossbow from a redneck blind. He said Goggles ran off about 75 yards to some clover, stopped, looked around and stared grazing. He then actually worked his way back towards where my dad had shot at him before leaving the field. Dad didn't get another shot. You can imagine how sick he is right now! Now to my question: That buck will still be around, right? Based upon how he acted after the shot, no snort , no flagging, actually stopping to eat and grazed back towards the shot. We both thought it didn't mess him too much. Are we wrong?
10. new bow I went with a G5 Optix sight this year. It has the 3 fixed pins and the floater pin. I absolutely love it! I can't imagine swapping it out for anything else. It's pricey though. If the money isn't an issue I'd definitely try it out
11. Black Bear I went thru an outfitter. He used stuff like peanut butter, cookie dough, twizzlers and other candy. He also would put out the nastiest smelling beaver he could get. The concept was the same. I'd sit in a tree, over the bait, and wait for the bears to come in
12. Black Bear I went to Manitoba last year in the spring
13. Patience paying off I was thinking 4.5 and 150ish. When trying to guesstimate him I got any score from 148-154. Like I said, he's also got about a 6 inch flyer off the back that you can't see in these pics. The QDM is certainly a lot of work but it does pay off. The biggest deer I've ever seen while hunting, in SW MO, was probably 140's. He definitely is the top of our hit list. I was just back there for the first few days. He didn't show up on camera until last Monday. I won't be back until November. My dad is gonna be hunting him. He wants me to shoot him but I want him to shoot him. I really hope one of us gets a crack. I also hope he stays close. There's hunters all around and I'm pretty sure there's a couple guys that poach.
14. Hey everyone. My parents purchased their property about 5 years ago. For the last couple of years we started getting serious about growing bigger deer. They live in SW MO and to see a big mature buck is kind of a rarity. He found out after he purchased the land that the previous owner killed deer and turkeys year round. So there was basically nothing left. So we started putting out food plots, mineral stations and have only taken 3 deer off the property. Then last year he lost a bunch of deer to EHD. It's been frustrating to say the least. But when he checked his cameras last week this guy showed up! Needless to say we are jacked. It is probably the biggest buck either of us have ever seen in SW MO. They just dont grow that big or they dont get to be that old. This is a buck we named Goggles. We saw him a couple years ago and then we didnt get any pictures last year of him. We knew he had some potential but didnt realize he would do this. He's also got some other bucks that look to have a lot of potential in the future. He probably has 2 other shooters this year if we get the chance, but this one is the biggest. The pictures arent very good. My parents have a computer but they dont have internet. He took a picture of the screen of his computer with his cell phone and then sent me the pics. There is also a flyer coming off the back on his right side. Neither one of us are very good with guessing score or age, any ideas of what you think he might score or how old he is? Appreciate the feedback!
15. Martin bows. I used to shoot a Martin Prowler before I switched to my Hoyt. My brother has it now and I'll still shoot it from time to time. The biggest buck I've ever shot with my bow I did with my Martin. It is what it is, middle of the road bow. There is a difference IMO. BTW Uncle Ted has switched to Matthews.
16. Can deer smell Trophy Rock? We go thru several a year on my dad's place. The deer love them there. SW Missouri
17. Mosquito Repellent I use the holster as well. You can attach it anywhere
18. Mosquito Repellent I would go with the earth scent. It's the same price but it does smell like dirt IMO. Thermacell is the first thing I put in my backpack or turkey vest. They work that good. I was in Canada last summer and I had 2 going when I was on stand. Never had one issue with black flies or mosquitoes.
19. Mosquito Repellent Thermacell has an "earth"scent pad. I use the earth one more than the no scent but either one works great
20. What gets your goat? To me, I look at it as entertainment more than reality. A person gets to see some bucks that most of us will never see.
21. What was your first compouind bow? Mine was a Martin Prowler. To date I shot my biggest buck with a bow with it. My dad had bought me a bow from a guy he worked with for like 40 bucks. We went to Walmart and he was planning on spending another 100 or so getting it set up, there was nothing on it when we bought it. We got to bass pro and they had no tools to adjust it at all. They said it was too old. So he ended up buying me the Martin. I think he ended up spending like 4-500 on everything. He's a good dad. 4 years later he bought it back from me, when I bought my Hoyt, to give to my little brother. He loves telling the story how he bought that bow twice!
22. drop away rest for hoyt bows I love my QAD. I had a rip cord before. It was ok but I like mine now a lot better. I like how it will stay up even if I have to let down. No chance of the arrow coming off the rest. I had an arrow come off the rest on a let down with the rip cord and spooked the deer. Changed soon after
23. I have a question I've never thought about until today. In SW Missouri, where my parents live, they got about 4 inches of snow Thursday. It was on the ground til yesterday. Talking to some people around there and they said that they think the hens have already laid their eggs. Will the snow and extreme cold effect the hatch this year? I never even thought about until today when I was talking to my dad. Thanks
24. 2013 Thunder Chicken Down Congrats!
25. is it bow season yet? I went a shot a techno hunt today in Wichita. It was awesome shooting at animals that weren't in 3D or box form.
