Oklahoma Waterfowlers... Jeramie, where's your ranch at? That cold front pushed a ton of birds down. On Tuesday morning, we shot a 4-man limit in 40 minutes. Birds included, gadwall, wigeon, mallards, and even a lone pintail.

Well had a chance to go out again this morning near Chelsea, shot a 2-man. Definitely seeing more ducks but still not a lot of migratory birds. Had one group of about 6 green heads bust us while we were picking up ducks. Other than that, just saw teal, gadwall, ringnecks, and wigeon. Oh and we saw a rabbit too! Ha.

How long to let a wounded deer lie? Thanks for all the advice. We'll know better next time, really wish we both didn't have prior commitments for that evening or we would've stayed in KS one more night. Like someone said, you live, you learn.

Oklahoma Waterfowlers... Yeah, I know we could use rain. I've got a lot of ponds I usually hunt, that are either almost bone dry, or much smaller due to lack of water. Needless to say, ducks aren't on them like usual. My buddy and I decided to give the spend the next couple weeks back in the woods with our bows and wait a while to get back in the duck blinds.

This past week, I was filming a hunt for a buddy up in Southeastern Kansas. He shot a real nice 8 around 8:30 am, we went back and looked at the footage and saw the arrow hit a little far back (he was quartering at us) but still looked like it was a good shot. We went and checked the blood and arrow and it looked like lung blood. We let the buck sit until 10:30 before we started tracking him (had to head back to OK by noon). We ended up kicking the buck up 175 yards or so away. At that point blood was clotted and we lost the track 50 yards further down the trail. The question arising from this long story, how long does everyone suggest letting a deer lie before tracking?

Anybody on here duck hunt in Oklahoma? Just curious to if you were seeing any migratory birds yet and which part of the state you were in. I hunted this weekend out near Ft Gibson lake and saw (not decoyed) maybe 100 ducks total (which I consider low).

Well I didn't see anything Sunday morning, from what we saw on the way out there were a lot of deer bedded down and didn't seem to be moving. I think the full-ish moon that night hurt a little bit as all of the acorn rage I put out was cleaned up overnight. As of Sunday morning before the hunt, there had been 35 deer taken, 4 of which were P&Y. Overall it was a good weekend, saw a real nice buck but never got a shot and I got my pass for next year Nov 1-3, so I was pleased. Some of the bucks were chasing, but not all. Peak rut looks like it's only a week or two away. Now it's time to get back to hunting with the compound. Heading out tomorrow morning to see how the bucks are acting further north.

McAlester AAP! Daily Updates starting 10/18/2012 live updates from the hunt to come. Shot a quality pass this morning, passed on a small 8 before she came out. Got back to my stand around noon and sat until dark, only saw one more doe this afternoon. Needless to say I let her walk, saving that last tag for a big buck.

McAlester AAP! Daily Updates starting 10/18/2012 live updates from the hunt to come. Well quick update on my hunt down here at McAlester. Ending up sitting in a bottom with oak trees everywhere, in the middle of it there's a small 80 x 50 yd field running along hominy creek. I'm set up right on the edge of it sitting over two fresh scrapes. This morning sat til 11, saw a coyote and that's all. Went and got lunch at the pickup, returned to the stand at 1 to find that a deer had been there when I was gone (prints in the acorn rage I put out). Didn't see anything until 5:30, when I saw legs coming from behind a tree on the other side of the field. Turns out its a wide 10 point, came out broadside but he was 45 yds away, and I'm not comfortable shooting that with my recurve. He then quartered to me at a steep angle up until 20 yards. It was angle where I had no clean shot. Then he turned behind a cedar tree and never presented a shot after that. Saw another coyote after that. Heading back out in the morning hoping to see the 10 again, he was probably a 130 maybe 140 class deer. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Question for the Oklahoma hunters Ya I'm hoping the same thing, I actually drew McAlester this weekend so I'll have a recurve in my hand all weekend and definitely hope the bucks are starting to chase. Are you out around the Fairview area yourself?

Just hunt there. Live in Tulsa, go to school at OSU in Stillwater.

Yeah, I'm hunting out near the fairview area and the one kind of traffic we do have out there is oil crews everywhere. But there aren't any pump jacks on our land. And to abrown -And I'm fortunate enough to only have other hunters on my east side. The owners of the remaining adjacent land don't hunt or allow hunters on their property. As far as ag fields, the nearest are over half a mile away. We used to have a large wheat field next to us, but they pulled that out three years ago and don't farm any longer. Our property is still holding as many deer as back then, but this past year they've become very nocturnal.

Thanks for the update Jeramie. I've been planning on hunting the oaks on the top side of hominy. I'm prefer to hunt in that somewhat dense timber and am ok seeing only a deer or two close enough to shoot rather than sitting on a the edge of a field and having everything I see be over 100 yards away. I've hunted Big Mac twice before but didn't have any luck either time, so hopefully that'll change this year. I'll let y'all know how it goes. Thanks again for the info.

This is from about a month ago, early Teal season. Edit: For some reason the pic is small, if you click it, it enlarges. Fixed.... free of charge. Jeramie
