Guest TennesseeTurkey
Les Miles is staying at LSU and they couldnt get Harbaugh... It dosent look like Michigan will get a big name coach... I heard an analyist say that most of their recruits come from out of state most of them as far away as Florida and Texas... So if that is the case (being really hard to recruit there) does any big name coach want to go there? It seems like a career killer job... gzilla45
They are still the program with the most wins so based on that alone I would say yes. Are they down right now? Sure, but they will come back.
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
Michigan HAS to go after these big name guys. It's not a given they are going to come crawling just because it is Michigan. I don't see how anyone can say that it is a career killer job after having one bad coach for 3 years. Look at the two guys that have been mentioned and look at the programs they were/are at. Why would anyone leave a top program for another one that would take 2-3-4 years to rebuild from the last guys mistakes? Michigan or not, no job is going to be desirable to a coach who has the option of going to the NFL, or a coach who has a top recruiting class coming win with a chance at another national title. I'm a Michigan fan, but I knew Harbaugh wasn't coming here once the NFL rumors started. Les Miles, not a big shock but I thought they had a chance. Maybe they took his age into consideration and didn't want to have to go through this again 5-6 years from now, so they didn't offer him the money he wanted. If I were a betting man, I'd say they offer and get Brady Hoke by the end of the week. muggs
They just have to get back to their roots. There has to be a good coach out there with ties to Michigan who understands what sort of system they run there. They should have never fired Carr to begin with, but I don't think they necessarily need a big name guy. They're in a state of panic right now, so that's what they think they need. What they need is a guy who can recruit.
Guest TennesseeTurkey
How easy is it to recruit at Michigan?
The_Kat
I saw Les was interested and was shocked to see him consider leaving LSU.
muggs
How easy is it to recruit at Michigan? Easy. Rich Rod chose to recruit smallish, quicker guys to run that gimmick offense he runs. You don't need to do that at Michigan. Carr recruited Ryan Mallet who was the #1 overall QB recruit in the nation. Mallet transferred after they hired RichRod. At the time, Michigan was one of Terrell Pryor's final three schools and he was the #1 QB recruit in the nation.
MCH
For Les Miles, Michigan is the perfect job. Timing is wrong, though. And that causes the job to be les desirable for any other coach. The perfect situation for Les, is for his LSU Tigers to win the SEC next year, make it to the championship game AND for Michigan to struggle again. That way, Michigan can fire their new hire and Les will split with LSU in good hands.
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
Well I was wrong...I said by the end of the week, but I should have said Hoke would be the coach by the end of the day.

Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
beat me to it.... that was fast! Something tells me this deal has been in place all along but I think Hoke and Michigan both knew they had at at least try for Miles. the A.D. already stated in his press conference that he didn't think Harbaugh was coming, so I imagine they didn't put much effort into getting him besides offering a boat load of money. MIles was a long shot, no reason for him to leave LSU, but they had to at least entertain the idea of him coming. For this deal to be done so fast after Miles declined makes me think Hoke was the guy all along.
muggs
The problem now is what do they do about their roster. The QBs Michigan has in place aren't Hoke-style QBs. The QB at SD St was a big guy, more of what you're used to seeing at Michigan. He's got a long way to go to build up that defense. Sure they're young, but they're all tiny too. Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
The problem now is what do they do about their roster. The QBs Michigan has in place aren't Hoke-style QBs. The QB at SD St was a big guy, more of what you're used to seeing at Michigan. Don't forget about Hokes time at Ball State. He ran a spread offense there (not the same spread option RichRod runs) with Nate Davis who had a pretty good career there. I think most people are going to expect Denard Robinson to still be the QB, but people are forgetting about Devin Gardner. He's 6-4 around 215 and can run, has a strong arm and what I think is more accurate than Robinson's. I think he'll fit the offense better and I wouldn't be surprised to see him at QB when the season starts. If/when his request for a medical redshirt clears, Hoke will have him for 4 years. He's got a long way to go to build up that defense. Sure they're young, but they're all tiny too. That's going to be the tough part. They have talent on the d-line, and that's Hokes bread and butter. He was the D-line coach in 1997 when they had probably the most dominant line in the country. LB is where they are lacking the most depth and that's scary considering their two main LB's mouton and ozeh are gone. Secondary I think should improve. Safeties have experience, and they'll get J.T. Floyd back at CB, who missed half the season, and it looks like Troy Woolfolk is progressing fast after his injury made him miss the entire season so he should be back. There's some talent there to work with I think. It was just a matter of having a scheme and coaches who can turn that into a product on the field and in games. It's all going to depend on the coordinators he brings in and the assistants they hire. RichRods biggest problem is that he hired the d-coordinator, and then wouldn't let them pick their own staff or run their own schemes. muggs
You'd think they'd keep Robinson at QB after the year he had, but who knows. I'm sure you could move him to RB or WR and he'd contribute just as much. Mix him in the wildcat at times etc... The Hoke hiring seems like a good move. We'll see. With the recruitng class OSU has coming in, I'll enjoy 4 more years of dominance no problem, but I want the rivalry back! Makes for something to look forward to. I'm actually pumped to see the Nebraska join the conference and to see them finally get a Conf Championship game.
