I just about refuse to turn on Dora the Explorer or Go Diego Go for my 2 year old to watch... We speak English in this country... Im starting to turn some more of those shows off too because Yo Gabba Gabba just had a cartoon about cars making the air dirty and we dont want the air dirty... Am I being a jerk for doing that? I kind of feel like one but I dont either...

Cash loves Gabba....and it overall has good shows. I get that " I like Bugs" rap in my head and hum it all dang day. As for Dora....I feel the same way you do, but Jenn being a teacher won that battle saying he needed to learn spanish. I feel that people in America should speak English, but that battles been lost long ago. In several schools, spanish is almost the primary language and I'd hate for my kid to be an outcast.....I guess I'll stay on the fence :D

I studied Spanish for 5 years and am fairly fluent, and will admit it has come in helpful on some jobs where the workers are all Mexicans.

Someone mention a fence? I have a post you can borrow.

If I ever have kids I would never take away any daily educational stuff that liked or watched. I have no problems with kids learning any and all that they can. Learning a second language is nothing to be ashamed of and actually very useful in the work force. Holding my kids back from the world is something I would not want to do as a parent.

That's my point... we speak english here... he shouldn't NEED to know spanish at a young age... just take his required 1 class of it in high school

I dont see anywhere in your original post about having your 2 year old "needing" to take a spanish class or "need" to know spainsh. You dont want him to know spanish or deal with it or hear about how cars pollute the world, dont let him watch that. Your call, Dad.

This is a shame. You worrying about your son being an outcast in an American school. That is not right.

No battle is lost unless we give up trying.

Where we lived at Texoma, this would have been a legitimate concern as that area has the highest percentage of spanish residents in the state.

But thankfully, he will attend my old school which is backwoods hillbilly :D.

All three of my kids have watched Dora and they all turned out relatively "normal". :D

What do you think your 2 year old is going to take form these shows?

Learning to speak Spanish is great, but just because someone watches these shows doesn't mean that they are going to automatically start thinking that our government should be giving illegals basic US citizen rights.....

Entitled to your opinion. Can kinda see your point, but imho for kids that are interested in them don't really think it does them any harm, think it would do more harm to show a child that you are against them learning another language.

Never had a problem letting my kids watch dora or diego. Those shows are probably better than a lot of others for what they are.

If I am not mistaken it is required for kids to take a second language in high school in most places across this country and spanish is probably the most useful.

Maybe its the fact that he shouldnt be learning from a bi-lingual 4 year old who cant find the little blue puppy on her own ... :D..... BTW Kyle the one I get stuck in my head is "There's a party in my tummy" LOL

And these are the same kids that suck in math and science and can't make simple change without a calculator. I graduated in 1993 and lucked out not being required to take a foreign language. So far it has not been a problem for me personally. I can't say it is a bad idea but I am just pointing out what I feel is a misdirection in priorities.

My boy watched all them shows when he was younger. Guess how much Spanish he learned from them.........none. He can count to 10 in Spanish only because some of his friends taught him. I see nothing wrong with letting kids watch it. The days of the Thundercats, He-Man, original Transformers and Popeye are gone.......deal with it.

This country has folks that speak several different languages. English may be the prominent language but it's not the only language......besides Tominator thinks over half of us suck at it anyways. :D

A lot worse stuff going on elsewhere - corruption, arguments, beer talk .....I'd rather let them watch Dora on TV than join Realtree forums. :D :D

I think I just got owned.... or pwned whatever pwned means :D.... I wonder what Chris thinks about it being a teacher and such... (not the pwned part)

Multilingual people have a big advatage in this world, and young children are ripe for learning. Nothing wrong with speaking more than one language, doesn't mean English can't be you're primary language however.

My kids are 2 and 4, yogabbagabba is among their favorites. When I first saw it I thought it was trash. But I watched a few times with them and realized that it promotes things like music, reading, physical activity, and the like. I don't totally agree with your take on the dirty air thing, it just takes some parenting to further explain things. I can see a cartoon like that convincing a little kid that cars are evil and nobody should drive, we as adults know that's not true. I started talking/teaching my daughter about enery consumption/conservation before she could even talk, as far as I'm concerned they're the key to solving our energy crisis.

Graduated in 1987 and the school I graduated from it was required to have a minimum of 2 years of a foreign language. Was a rather large school in central Florida with several options ranging from latin to russian and as far as I know the foreign language requirement went back a good ways. We were not allowed to use calculators in math classes until upper level math, above algebra if I remember correctly and don't recall being allowed to use calculators on any tests.

Think what we may be seeing now is a kinda shift in society and tolerance and what educators are doing to try to "keep up", I mean kids now are required in some schools to have certain calculators and are encouraged to use them, they are even allowed now if I am not mistaken to use calculators for college entrance exams. Sure wasn't that way when I was in high school. Seems more emphasis these days with school administrators(not teachers) is on kids preperation for standardized testing so the schools look good when it comes to the federal programs. That said I can see where science may be lacking. I know the schools here put a lot of emphasis on math and english. Seems I have read over and over that a lot of places are short in the areas of math and science teachers.

What's it going to hurt the kid? Seems by not letting him watch programs with a cultural background other than America, you are teaching your kid to be racist...Just how I see it. At least if a child has some exposure to other cultures by one means or another, he/she can develop their OWN OPINION.

I didn't have to take Spanish until highschool and college.

Lately it seems to me that "America" is so much better and too good for the rest of the cultures....Think for a minute how other cultures are looking at us....

Did you seruusly just throw out the racist card?

Do you know what racist means?

No where did he say anything about hatred for a race. He said he didnt want his kid to watch tv with Spanish speaking characters. No where was he racist at all and that comment is insane.

No Ben I am racist.... I hope that spanish speaking squirrel on Dora gets whats coming to him.... :bat: ....seriously what does race have to do with a cartoon? I dont hate someone because of their race, but I dont like it when people come into our country and we have to adapt to their ways not vice versa....
