92xj
I wasnt planning on hunting elk in Wyoming but if the opportunity comes about I still think I would use my 270. Elk hunts that I might actually get to go on this year will be in Idaho and Washington in rolling hill conutry and not mountain country. If the hunts are in mountain country I will take my 270, if they are in the rolling hills like that places I have scouted and been invited in Idaho, the 300wm will go with me. I honestly think that after all my research and awesome input from everyone, I have changed from a mainly hunting rifle to a mainly bench gun since my 270 shall work for all animals I plan to hunt. Dawg
When I go to Colorado to hunt (which has only been the past two years) I use a .300 mag that my dad built. It has a Mauser action, but I can't recall all the details about it. It doesn't kick bad at all. The .300 is a good choice.

toddyboman
I think I have decided to go with a Rem700 300WM Sendero SF II. That is actually the gun I was going to suggest......... Dad has one. 1000 yards isn't a problem It is a great shooting gun!

Strut10
XJ............ So long as the rifle doesn't grossly mis-fit (made that word up myself!!) you, you will not be put off by the recoil of the .300 WM in a gun the weight of the Sendero. I will guarantee it. For extended bench sessions, you will need nothing more than a good recoil pad. The gun may already come with one. But if you do need to replace the pad, it'll be a lot less money than a brake. 92xj
I plan on doing the pad first and shooting it a lot. I am not really too concerned with the recoil, but the less recoil the better. I will also not be able to afford to do the brake as soon as I get it, that's just on the wish list for later. PotashRLS
The last muzzle brake rifle I was around was at a range with a shooting canopy attached to the club house. The energy/blast from the gun was redirected under the canopy and was very distracting to other shooters. My 2 cents on brakes. I personally have never owned or shot one. I could be and probably am wrong on this, but thought those came with a decent pad from the factory. If not, the pachmayr decelerator pads are pretty reasonable. If not, the pachmayr decelerator pads are pretty reasonable. I would assume they do, but I cant remember what they are like in person. I have only shot one and that was about 2 years ago. I am not going to order mine til mid February, unless taxes or bonus come in sooner. I dont want to use any money from my normal accounts and income for this toy. Knowing me, I will throw glass on it the day it comes in and go shoot and not wait around for a pad (if I need one) or a brake. I am already itching to shoot and I dont even own the gun yet. Leo
You really should look for one of these. Weatherby Vanguard Sub-MOA in 300WBY mag. They can be found for your price point.
92xj
So, I have (I think) narrowed it down to two choices. The first being... Rem 700 300wm Sendero SF II and the second being..... Savage 116 bear hunter. I dont like the camo stock but could get it dipped or hydrographic something else. I have heard and researched good and bad opinions of both. Also, I kind of have my eye on a gun from Sniper Central, which in my price range will be a 308. Thoughts?

Good call, Leo. I was going to suggest the Vanguard (standard......not Sub-MOA) in .300 Win or Wby. But I thought the Sendero was carved in stone. They can be had very inexpensively and all the non Sub-MOA Vanguard's that I have experience with shoot sub-moa anyhow. Some of them a bit under. Some of them a lot under. mikebohio
have you considered the red rider with the compass in the stock?

Grady269
interesting thing about the bigger calibers. 308,30-06, .300 WM, and 300 WSM all are shooting the same 150gr-180 gr bullet just at slightly different velocities. Of the group the .308 and 30-06 are my favorites because they recoil less and under 300 yds there just is not much difference in any of them. If you really want to "jump up" in a .30 cal you need to go to a 300 Ultra-mag or 300 WBY mag.

preacherman
Ben, I have a 300 wsm in a Browning A-Bolt and it doesn't have as much recoil as you would think. It "kicks" don't get me wrong; but it isn't that bad.
LETMGROW
I've got to put in my 2 cents worth. I had a list of 3 guns I thought I wanted and my wife and son were aware of it. Last year for Christmas I got a Thompson Center Icon, Weathershield, Realtree camo in .308. I like it! Groups of 3 - .662 and less with factory Hornady ammo. I can't find anything about it I don't like. Last hunting season was a success to say the least. If a .308 won't take down anything in North America there is something wrong with the shooter.
