mortensen
I didn't think so... The Model T was affordable and got people traveling across the United States. And I'm sure it took many hunters to their hunting destination, however, I wouldn't tie my deer, elk, or moose down on the front fender of a Model T! And you could say it was the first off-road vehicle ever produced considering there weren't many if any paved roads in those days. Interesting Ford Model T history video. http://www.modelt.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=52&Itemid=
LETMGROW
Can honestly say I never owned a Model T. I have ridden in a couple different ones and have done engine work on a couple. A friend of mine has a 1917 which is in very good original condition. This car has been in his family since it was new. We rode around in it a couple years ago. We came to a steep hill and couldn't make it all the way to the top. We ran out of gas 3/4 the way up. We had 1/2 tank of gas! Walt let the car coast down to a driveway where he backed in, pulled out facing downhill and started backing up the hill. We made it! The gas tank sat just under the windshield, these cars had no fuel pump and relied on gravity flow of fuel to the carburetor. By turning around we had the gas tank higher than the carb, After we backed up the hill, we turned around and continued on our way. Henry Ford was close with the transmission design to being an automatic trans. With a series of bands in the tranny it was a cross between a hydro stat and automatic trans. Tricky to drive at first but manageable after you drove it some. The hydramatic trans Olds came out with in 1939 was a modified take off of Henry's early effort. There used to be model T's galore around here when I was young. Many were cut down into farm vehicles and what we used to call " Doodlebugs " Sure wish I knew where they all went. mortensen
Here's some pictures of the early Ford (modified) racing cars. It sure is interesting how we Americans developed a passion for auto racing. I believe our most popular sport is NASCAR. http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z9258/Ford-Model-T-Racer.aspx
