Guest J_Owens_66
Hey Folks, I am going to be purchasing a scope for the Ruger Number 1 in 45-70 I am about to purchase. I have considered many options. Here they are, Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40, Burris FF 2 3-9X40 w/ Free Stuff (Top Choice of right now because of price and it is a excellent scope), Nikon Monarch Gold 1-6X42 30mm tube, and Bushnell Elite 3200 and 4200 Series 3-9X40 (3200) and the 1-6X36 (4200), and the Leupold VX-III 2-8X36. I want the brightest scope i can get, and also the best value. Don't want to spend over $450. The Burris FF2 is at the top of the list because of the price and it is a great scope overall. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks
AJ
Re: 45-70 Scope You do have a bunch of good scopes there. I have a 3-9x40 FF II Burris and its not that bright. I was a little dissapointed when I looked through it. Its good enough for most hunting, but its not near the same quality as the Signature or Black Diamond by Burris. How about a Weaver 4.75x40 fixed scope? I don't know how the brightness would compare to the others you listed but its a compact, sturdy, lightweight, and good quality scope. Guest J_Owens_66
Re: 45-70 Scope AJ, out of these which would be your top pick? Throw in the Other Burris models that are under 450. Thanks for the quick answer. Thanks again.
AJ
Re: 45-70 Scope Actually, for that gun, my pick would be either the 4x33 Fixed Leupold, possibly (probably) the Leupold Fixed 6x42, or at the upper end of your price but a very good quality scope is Kahles 2-7x36 American Hunter. It has a small objective but its top end optics.
Guest J_Owens_66
Re: 45-70 Scope What quality are the Leupold Fixed Powers, VX-I, II, III??? Thanks Again.
AJ
Re: 45-70 Scope The FX-III are near the top quality they make. I would not go under a II. The VX-III and FX-III are the same quality. One is Variable (V) and one is Fixed (F). The straight 6x42 is a sweet scope. Its more rugged than most any variable, is super bright, and weighs only 11 ounces. The VX-III are expensive. I can't see myself spending the $ on them. I will step up to a Zeiss Conquest or other high end scope first. You are putting this on a stout .45-70 that can see some very stout recoil. You will need a good scope that will withstand the punishment and keep on putting the bullets where you want.
AJ
Re: 45-70 Scope Another one I found is the Nikon Monarch 4x40 or the 6x42. I just bought 3 Nikon Monarch scopes. They are good quality, very bright scopes.
Guest J_Owens_66
Re: 45-70 Scope I would like to have a variable magnification, how is the Zeiss Conquest, the 4 inches of eye relief sure sounds good on that 45-70. Another reason i was looking at the 2.5-8X36 VX-III is because it has good eye relief. How do the VX-III and the Zeiss Conquest compare? Thanks for all your quick responses. JimT
Re: 45-70 Scope My buddy put a Weaver fixed four on his mz this past fall. Outstanding scope for the money. It would look nice on your new gun for sure. All the others mentioned will be a good buy also.
Guest J_Owens_66
Re: 45-70 Scope I will be wanting to be able to shoot at ranges up to 250 yards or so, so i want a variable magnification. Thanks again for everyones input.
AJ
Re: 45-70 Scope [ QUOTE ] How do the VX-III and the Zeiss Conquest compare? [/ QUOTE ] They are close. I have seen reports that place Conquest over Leupold and I have seen some that place Leupold over the Conquest. Me personally, I have compared them side by side and I would go with the Zeiss. [ QUOTE ] I will be wanting to be able to shoot at ranges up to 250 yards or so, so i want a variable magnification. [/ QUOTE ] That's why I recommended the straight 6x42. It's fine out to that distance. In fact Hunter Benchrest stipulates no greater than 6x magnification and they shoot at 200 yards. But hey, its up to the shooter. You are the one footing the bill and will live with your decision. You get what you want.

[/ QUOTE ] LOL, you kill me buddy Check out the Nikons compared to the Leupolds. I think that they are just as bright and you don't pay for the name as much Of course, I'm always looking for a bargain LOL. too_
AJ
Re: 45-70 Scope [ QUOTE ] ...Of course, I'm always looking for a bargain. [/ QUOTE ] The litle brown toy truck stopped by my place today and dropped off a pair of Nikon Monarch scopes. I looked at Midsouth's Refurb sale and I could not pass up these prices. I got a 5.5-16.5x44 Monarch Matte finish and a Titanium Monarch 15.5-16.5x44 Silver finish for $575 shipped. That's $25 less than most places want for the Titanium alone. They will get a close going over and check out before the 90 day warranty goes out. It's been my experience, that if a scope is going to go south, it will do so fairly soon. I like the 4-12x40 Nikon Monarch I got last week for my new .17 HMR so I figured what the heck, its hard to beat those prices. Guest J_Owens_66
Re: 45-70 Scope AJ, is the Burris Euro Diamond, Black Diamond, or the Signature Select better? I am looking at their 1-6X40 (30mm) scope. What advantage does a 30mm tube have over a 1 inch tube? How would these top of the line burris scopes compare to the Nikon Monarch Gold 1-6X42 w/30mm tube? Thanks Bud
Guest 9point
Re: 45-70 Scope I put a Burris 3x9 fullfield scope on my 45 70. Around 300 rds later I still love her. Nice scope and good price.
AJ
Re: 45-70 Scope [ QUOTE ] Is the Burris Euro Diamond, Black Diamond, or the Signature Select better? I am looking at their 1-6X40 (30mm) scope. [/ QUOTE ] The Diamond series scopes are top of the line Burris. I have a Black Diamond on my .338 Win Mag. Its very clear and holds up well. Burris is revamping their line of scopes this year. They have add a few new ones. [ QUOTE ] What advantage does a 30mm tube have over a 1 inch tube? [/ QUOTE ] They are stronger. They weigh more. They cost more. They allow the same light in as the 1" tube scopes. Sometimes they have more adjustments since the tube is bigger. [ QUOTE ] How would these top of the line burris scopes compare to the Nikon Monarch Gold 1-6X42 w/30mm tube? [/ QUOTE ] I would expect them to be similar in quality. Both are from reputable optics companies. You are down to the similar quality scopes with Leupold LPS, VX-III, Burris Black Diamond, Nikon Monarch Gold, so any of them should work very well for you. Trying to pick which one is best will have to be done by you. I suggest going to a high end gun shop and checking each one out side by side to see which one is best with your eyes. Whats best for me (optically) may not be best for you.
