Taxes and Politics... what a mess

So Illinois passed an income tax hike which is equal to a 66% increase. So if you had $1,000 taken out of your check for the state in 2010, and you made the same amount in 2011 they will take out $1,666. They also increased the business tax as well.

And of course as politics go our great governor has declared that he feels they are doing what's best for the people of illinois.

Meanwhile the politicians from Wisconsin have come to Chicago to encourage businesses to head North to there state due to the new tax hikes, they just tend to leave out the part where their taxes are higher than ours even after the hike.

Might start looking out of state for my next job.

This really bothers me! I've been stewing on this ever since I heard about it a few days ago. Everytime I think about it I get more ticked. My wife just got her first raise in two years on Jan. 1 and guess where it's all going to end up....state taxes. We're not going to see any of it. It's going to cost us around an extra $1300 a year. We get stuck footing the bill for bad political decisions and a lack of budget that caused this deficit in the first place. When you live paycheck to paycheck $100 a month extra is a lot of money to fork over for taxes.

We as employess are ultimately going to get stuck covering the corporate tax increase on top of that. My employer has already said they are dropping vision and dental insurance.

That is crazy Gary, sure don't understand what or how some of these politicians think. Pretty unfortunate that states mismanage so much and have to resort to telling their residents the only way out is to increase tax but that is all too common.

No doubt corruption is there, probably goes somewhat hand in hand with the mismanagement. Solution to problems is simple in my opinion, toss the corrupt out of office and eliminate the dead weight, shame that is easier said than done. Amazes me how many known corrupt people there are who continue stay in office and continue to get re elected.

Sales taxes here are high, near 10 percent in some places, fortunately we do not have a individual state income tax.

You are paying for the ignorance and voting record of your neighbors.

The US is paying for the ignorance and laziness of American voters. Had the Republicans not won in November do you understand that you'd be paying probably $3,000 in additional taxes due to credits from Bush expiring, tax rates adjusting up, etc.?

Ask the average American how much they paid in income taxes last year and about half will say "nothing, I got a refund". MORONS. If the Average American had someone analyze their life and show them exactly how much they pay in taxes (income, payroll, Medicare, phones, gas (big one there), property, car tags, etc. etc. etc. each year, there would be a revolt. But the politicians know exactly how stupid people are and how if they hide the tax increase behind a morsel of a handout, they will have the votes they need for the bill.

My 14 year old daughter read this quote from our governor...

"But obviously when you can't pay your bills and your bond ratings are going down and your providers aren't getting the money they need... you have to be man enough to realize that there comes a time in life where love alone can't pay the bills."

...and then asked me "What about all the people that are having a problem paying there bills now, what are they going to tell their bill collectors?

Reminds me of the time we were visiting my uncle who was a dyed and true union rat type. Love him, hate his love for unions.

He had been out of work for some astronomical amount of time (maybe a year and a half) and was railing on GM's management and that the union would eventually save him and call him back to work.

At a ripe old age of 7 or 8 I asked him "why don't you just go get another job?". Crickets chirped for a long time.

I hate unions...if they are sooooo great and so wonderful for the worker and the community, wouldn't the great northeast be the most prosperous area in the entire US? You'd think.

Your daughter gets it Gary, the politicians don't.

get out now. you have to notice that no one suggested any tightening of the goverment or it's budget. liberals tax & spend. it's simply what they do. as more folks move out of state, the taxes will go up. just look at ANY democrat state and compare it with ANY conservative state. then you be the judge.

that's the good news. now for the reeeal bad news. this new congress is not going to do any state bailouts.... you know, the $15 billion illinois needs, the 22 billion new york needs, the 28 billion california needs.

this will certainly be an interesting year.

I think you won't be the only one.

My guess is that Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana and Missouri are going to see a mass influx of Illionois folks and businesses.

They don't mention the recent Maryland tax increases on "the wealthy". I'm not sure of the exact numbers. But the increase was supposed to net a gain of +/- $350 million into the state's coffers. The actual end result was a net loss in revenues to the state of +/- $170 million.

Reagan was right. The libs will never learn.
