Shaun_300
We put our shack out last weekend but have been too busy to fish until yesterday. Got all our stuff out there, setup and fishing by around 3:30. At 4:20 something hammers my small jig tipped with a piece of minnow for walleye. Knew pretty well right away it wasn't a walleye. It'd make runs a good 20-30 feet, we figured it was probably a muskie, since people last year next to us caught 2 muskie through the ice over 50 inches long. I see the flash at the top of the hole and it takes up the whole 6" diameter of the hole. :jaw: Then the next problem, the 6" hole, how are we going to get this POed fish to get it's head up?:helpsmilie: He ends up coming to the bottom of the hole and just sitting there, for a good minute straight without moving. My buddy and I are trying to make up our minds as soon as possible how to get this freakin thing up. I get down on my knees and lower the line which lowers the fish slightly. Got his head started up the hole, gets about half way up the 16 inches of ice and I reach down and get my hand under his gills and pull him up. This is the first northern pike we've caught out at our shack on the Ottawa River. Usually it's only walleye and perch. Hence why we have the small lures, holes, etc. Weren't prepared for this at all! Told my buddy we'll have to get some blades for the 8" auger to give us a bit more leeway when it comes to bringing these suckers in. If he was much bigger we would have been screwed. Anyways here he is! Didn't have a scale, estimated weight around 9 pounds. He was 33 inches long. Sorry for the pic quality, taken with my phone. Topped it off with a nice walleye at around 9:00 last night.
