Will shoot a yote with whatever I can get my hands on or whatever I happen to be hunting with, but when I am out specifically hunting for them I take my rock river varmint in .223.

Biggest yote I have killed here was over 50 lbs. We do get coydog mixes here, have heard of some that were over 60 lbs and gotten trail cam pics of some that were probably close to that.

H&R2, Welcome to the Realtree Forums!

I have had government trappers come to my property for the last 20 years in the spring and take out coyotes with cyanide traps/guns. I just dont see coyotes any more. If I did see one I would shoot with whatever I had at the time. Around here they are like feral hogs, the only good one is a dead one.

  • 3 weeks later...

I use a Sig 522 with 3rd Gen night vision, a Rock River lower/Storm Lake Machine upper in 6.8 SPC, a Rem 700 VSSFII in 220 swift and a Colt Match Grade Lower/American Spirit Arms upper Bull barrel 24" in 223 Rem. Besides the night vision scope.....all Leupold optics. All of this hardware and I took my biggest yote with a muzzleloader (Thompson Center Encore) while deer hunting on opening day in Michigan in 2006 (approx 40 lbs-its a coydog, full mount in my trophy room). Biggest one I ever seen, helped my harvest my first Pope and Young buck in Pike County, IL. Huge yotes found in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. If I were to REALLY hunt big yotes.....I'd hunt central....North central Indiana.

I guess it would depend on what you want to do with the Yote after you kill it. If you are going to pelt it out, the smaller the better as far as bullet size goes. Going to let it lay, the bigger the better.

The gun of choice around here is 12 ga. with buckshot. Most serious dog hunters here are hunting with hounds. Consequently the shots are close enough the buckshot is effective.
