hammerforged
I have been asked if I would consider making a knife which would be on permanent display at the Culter International Knife Museum in Sardinia, Italy. I can make any type of knife I wish, but I am in a quandry as to what to make. I can only send one knife at this time with the option of adding another to the display in a year. I have always trusted in the views of those here and would really appreciate your input as to what type of knife and handle, etc. I am pretty sure it will be Damascus but am at a loss beyond that. In all honesty I am totally flabbergasted at this point. I was fortunate to visit this museum back in the early 70's while serving with the Marines over there, now to be asked to provide a knife for permanent display is beyond my wildest thoughts. AaronS
I don't have any thoughts on type of knife, but just wanted to say congratulations on such an honor.

clrj3514
I don't have any thoughts on type of knife, but just wanted to say congratulations on such an honor. That makes two of us! That is absolutely awesome Ross. You deserve it!
texastrophies
Ross, I tried to find the picture, but it looks like it is gone already, but last summer you had a naming contest for a knife that ended up being named the Contour. I think a blade with the similar design would be nice.
Adjam5
First off Congrats. It is quite the honor to have your work admired from across the pond. We here at the Realtree forums have known for quite some time about your skills and creativity. It seems only fitting that you have a work of yours in that museum. Maybe since the Italians are so good a creating good food. How about something in the way of a kitchen knife? Carving ,Filet or cheese blade. OR As William suggested...nothing more American overseas than a Bowie type. With genuine, only to North America...Whitetail antler scales. OR... A recreation of the knife that help free Europe from the Nazi grip. The Army issue fighting knife. My 3 cents.
Tominator
That's quite an honor Ross. Have to agree with William, nothing says America like a Bowie.
GWSmith
Congrats Buddy that is fantastic to even be chosen! I agree with those who said "Bowie"...it's the knife you have representing your business. Definitely make this one for yourself though because you know if you do that it will turn out perfect;)

buckee
I was thinking of a Bowie type knife too, because it is a good representation of an early North American Blade. I also think the handle should represent North America too. Maybe something on the exotic side like Antelope, Mountain Goat, Bighorn Sheep etc Just a thought bud, to get those creative juices of yours flowing. That is quite an honor Ross, and you've earned it my friend.
archerjg
Congratulations to you on such an honor. What about a bowie with Elk or Moose for the grips? Archerjg
BowtechTurkeyHunter
I think the knife you made me belongs in a museum but I have to lean towards that style you could do a style like that and put a tribute in a way towards the soldiers since you obviously have a passion for them I know you can't say this is for but you can tell people where your inporation came from! You have to do Damascus I really think it should be like a ladder. Hope it helps with an idea. I'm on. My phone or I'd put up pics of mine!! Jeramie
That is incredible! Congratulations! I like the Damascus too but could see where you could use this as an opportunity to honor our country too. Something American like bison bone, leather, etc. Cant wait to see how this progresses! RangerClay
Wow Ross !!! What an honor!!! Congratulations!!! I would go with a Bowie or an Arkansas toothpick. Definately damascus!
KirkV
Ross I agree with William That a bowie knife is a great American western knife that made the west known and remembered. If you decide to use deer antler let me know as I have a couple of big bases that were busted antlered deer I could help you out with! Congrats on the honor to do this Ross. hammerforged
Thanks everyone, I am still in disbelief somewhat. I have been emailing back and forth with the principals at the Museum to get some more details. Long story short, this will be part of a new gallery showcasing contemporary makers from around the world. There are only 5 makers from the U.S. that have been asked to participate. If none of the 5 they have asked then they will move down their list to the next ones until they get the 5 for the gallery. They are limiting the number of participants from each country to 5. If at any time I decide to remove my knife from display then another on the list will be asked to take my place so that there will always be 5 US makers on display. I can have a total of 2 knives on display at any time after the first year, I also have the option to switch out the knives in the display without losing my place. They were nice enough to provide me with the names of the other 4 makers that have been invited and we talked at length last evening. It is evident from our conversations that the Bowie is everyone's first thought as is also evident here. After all the discussion we 5 came to the conclusion that for all of us to make a Bowie at this time would be rather redundant even though we each have our own style - A Bowie is a Bowie, no way around that. I am considering taking Anthony's (Adjam5) advice and make a Damascus Chef knife, the folks in Italy have informed me that if this were the case then I would be allowed to make a set of no more than 3 and it could count as my single entry at this time. Thoughts?
KirkV
Ross that would be a beautiful knife to have displayed. Again let me know if you need Antler with burr. Don't know if that goes with a kitchen knife lol. Kirk
92xj
Chef knife would be sweet and coule gather business over there, which would be a plus. I think something old school america looking would be sweet. I found this random knife image looking up damascus wood and thought it was very old school american looking and something that you could easily do with your talent and skill. http://www.ringoffireforge.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/unique-knives-04.jpg
92xj
I like. http://www.ringoffireforge.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/unique-knives-04.jpg I think that handle with a skinner style blade like the one you put on my Pop's knife would also be a great knife. Leo
Your Tactical Master knife has very unique character. It has very nice lines in both the form and the Damascus. My suggestion is to submit one like this one you did.
buckee
I guess now it's a matter of which 3 kitchen knives to go with..eh The Chef's Knife, the Boning knife and a toss-up between the clever and the paring knife, are the most used Kitchen knives in our household. (along with the fillet knife) I always thought the fillet knife should be included as a kitchen knife as well. I always have one handy for cutting fat, membranes, from roasts and back straps. stevebeilgard
congrats, ross. what an honor. my suggestion is along the lines of leo's picture. a damascus knife. it could be a bowie. in any case, use a bone/antler handle. solid western tradition. whatever it is, i'm certain it will be a standout.
