92xj
Yeah...my son gets very frustrated in school with projects to the point he'd almost rather do all the work on a group project himself to avoid having to work with the group. He has an overactive fairness clock so I am trying to beat these ideals into his head. If nothing else, I am sure that management sees the same thing you do and it SHOULD give you a leg up when competing with them for jobs in case of layoffs, etc. I've always had a good work ethic....I do goof off but my job allows it and I always end up working more hours in evenings/weekends. I've always worked to a standard that allows me to go home with my head held high and proud of my effort and accomplishments. I've found that my standards are so high that it gets me down the road. New Sounds like your boy was just like I was in school. I finished many project alone and without the help of the group because they were not wanting to work on it and put in the effort. I was not going to fail because of someone else, so I stepped up and completed what needed to be done. I really hope that management sees what goes on and the only real saving grace I have is senority in start dates. Age and experience; everyone in the office has me beat, the next youngest is 18 years older than me, but I got in during a company make over and was hired before half of the folks here and in our company policies start date senorities go along way. My work ethic and drive is almost too intense, I get fired up at myself and want to get work done well in advance of when it's asked but with the government and DOE as my only customer/client, things move a little bit slower than I like. redkneck
I work less than anyone here, get paid more than anyone, except the boss, and only work around 32 hours a week. Poor work ethic? Maybe so, but sometimes your paid for what you know.

Yeah, I am a lot like you...although I have mellowed with age and wisdom a little bit. I will say that I used to have the attitude that I'd never be laid off/fired if I followed my work ethic and avoided politics....well, I was laid off when my wife was 12 weeks pregnant with our second child. So I am a bit jaded as a result of that. However, it all worked out. When I was laid off, they wouldn't let me go back to my desk (I am in IT and could do a LOT of damage) so they packed up my desk. Not only did they throw in the diskettes containing a very specific and important interface to them --for which there exists no copy in the entire world (I used the diskettes for resumes ) but they threw in a bunch of business cards of everyone I ever met. I was so disgusted at the time I would have either chunked them or threw them out if I were able to clean out my own desk. I looked through the cards and found the card for one of my vendors--bada bing I looked on their website and got a job with that vendor (it was the only call I received back out of 150 resumes). Then along comes one of the largest companies in the world and bought out my company so no I have some of the best benefits known to man and I work from home 100% of the time. So all that said....just like life, the business world isn't always fair. But I have learned to never let that affect my work ethic...if I go home satisfied with myself, I do well. The lay off had nothing to do with me personally, I was layoff number 16 out of a small department. It was housecleaning ahead of a merger. But had I not been laid off I wouldn't be working from home and then my wife couldn't work. So laying me off gave me about a 40% pay increase along with working from home which saves me thousands a year in vehicle maintenance and gas. So the best advice I can give is roll with the punches and take it day by day. Sometimes, good surprises. Sometimes, bad. New
Team Realtree
Let's keep the thread in order guys. Lazy is not determined by age. There is enough of it to go around. I don't care for lazy people either and I don't care what age they are. It's not their fault though. If an employer allows it, then it's theirs. If someone is lazy and got reprimanded or fired like they should, they might not be "Practicing lazy" anymore.
Shaun_300
I hear ya Ben, there's a few people at my work that are the same way. There's nothing that drives me more crazy than someone who is getting paid hourly to be standing beside their toolbox or hiding somewhere texting on their phone. Drives me nuts! All the licenced techs are paid flat rate, so when we're not on a job, we don't get paid. So it doesn't matter what we do. Sure sucks watching someone get paid to do nothing, especially when management doesn't do anything about it.

Newarcher
You know...I had a thought. I bet those guys who are lazy once were complaining to their buddies about the old/jaded guys at work who never do any work. It creeps up on you faster than you think! New I was thinking about that today as well. But, I do know a TON of older more experienced workers that can still work the younger folk under the table. They still have the drive and desire to do what they can. I am very curious about what their work ethic was in their younger days. Both the lazy and non lazy older worker. Newarcher
I've been in the work force full time in a professional capacity for almost 20 years now and here's a fact that I have come to both observe and --unfortunately-- understand all too well. Many people that a kneejerk reaction might consider lazy are actually victims of poor Corporate cultures. I would imagine that the laziness gnaws at some as much as it does those who observe. Most men I know want to go home and feel like they accomplished something great during the day. I know I do but often I don't have the opportunity because of problems beyond my control. Sometimes companies get the workers they deserve. I could tell you stories which would blow your mind at some of the things I have seen done by companies and the managers who run them. One such was when I was working for an insurance company in their IT department just before Y2K. I was there three weeks and really wanted to make a splash in a meeting. Little did I know that my supervisor and her manager were going to sabotage the entire company's ability to rate insurance policies by making sure that when Y2K hit our systems were not ready--just to get the Technical Support manager fired. They prepared this extremely elaborate Excel spreadsheet showing that at Y2K we would be on a non-Y2K ready version of Excel. It was too hard for the Technical Support manager to understand but I figured out out (assumed it was a mistake) and pointed that fact out, thinking that I was dong a good thing. They both looked at each other and then at me with looks that could melt skin....then the Technical Support manager figured out I was right and connected the dots. Both were fired not long after that. New
Hunt or be Hunted
That's one of the reasons I'm glad I work with only 4 other people. One of them is the owner of the company then the another one is our supervisor. So we get the job done and no fooling around, If they do I think they'd get fired. Lol But I think with pouring concrete we don't really have time to fool around and do nothing. I do get your point though Ben. Some people just get to sit around and do nothing all day and get paid for it.
Turkeygirl
Sometimes it's better to just worry about your own job and doing your best and not how other people are doing there's. Saves you less mental stress and worry. Go complain to your manager if need be then get on with life. And as Scott said, laziness is not determined by age. Laziness is not determined by job either...has to do with the person, how they were raised, their values, their work ethic, their motivation. magnatecsteve
I'm a leadman where I work, and it frustrates me when I am accused of being a "yes man" just because I do what my boss expects of me and my shift without complaining or pawning it off. ruttinbuc
I worked with people who died working and with people who would watch them. Anywhere you go you have your workers and your slackers. In all professions blue and white. Had it not been for the slackers more of us might have a job today. I was a leadman too in a few different capacities because I took pride in my work and ethics. Management recognized that. What sucked was it was me who had to answer for all the problems. When I mentioned it would be nice to get some good help they defended the clowns... Edited January 19, 2011 by ruttinbuc
Adjam5
Ben...I get your humor and your posts... Rock on...No need to apologize for anything. I enjoy your wit. I hate guys on my job who pay no attention to safety issues and jeopardize others safety and health, by raising dust, creating fumes and working over your head without warning. Just to name a few. I also hate when I phone my wife during the day and ask whats for dinner. She says chicken cutlets,( that means corn, rice a roni and biscuits). I come home and she made something else. After having my heart set on chicken cutlets. I hate that!
elkoholic
At any job where there are multiple workers, there are usually one or two who do most of the work. Be it reloading the printer or doing the dishes in the break room, it seems that it gets done by the same person or people all the time. Many people work harder avoiding work than they would if they actually did some. It does no good to dwell on it, it will just drive you insane, but a good rant sometimes is needed.
