Story and a Question

I went to a Bulls/ Grizzlies game last night. It was the first pro sporting event that my wife and me had ever been to. After the game was over, we stood around to see if Derrick Rose would come back out and sign a few autographs. Kurt Thomas actually came out and stood around in the stands and made small talk with some of us who were waiting. He was a really classy guy. Rose came to the doorway and I heard him say, "Man if I go out there, I'm gonna get mobbed." He was probably right because there was a high school game being played and it would have turned into chaos.

While I was standing there, I was talking to another guy who had a phone full of pictures with different players and celebrities and he was talking about who was nice and who wasn't. He showed me a pic where John Wall actually pulled over on the side of the road and signed his son's jersey while he was walking down the street. Then he told me how he saw Samuel L. Jackson cuss out a little boy who asked him to sign his poster.

Here's the question- What athlete's or celebrities have you met, and what impression were you left with?

I've met Kurt Thomas and Joaquin Phoenix, both were very nice guys. Joaquin even bought us all a case of beer a piece and invited us all to come hang out with him after we got done with the shoot.

I've also met Reese Witherspoon. Let's just say she didn't act very lady-like and leave it at that.

This chick I used to date worked for a casting company and she introduced me to Orlando Bloom briefly. I didn't really know or care who he was at the time... wait a minute, I still don't.

I knew an American Idol top ten singer in college named George Trice. I think his name should have been Georgina, Ima Flamer, or something a little more feminine to match his personality.

I once was within arm's length of Cathy Lee Gifford...... guess that doesn't count.

I am saddened to hear about Reese Witherspoon not acting like a classy lady....I've always thought she seemed very down to earth and nice. Maybe an off day?

I don't get too much into celebrity worship because most of them are turds. However, having said that we don't live their lives and I am sure that not everyone who approaches them or deals with them are very nice. After a couple years of dealing with the pushy public, we might not be very nice celebrities ourselves.

Samuel L. Jackson is a turd of the first order I am told. Very much a raging racist and not very nice.

I have met and played basketball with Muggsy Bogues. He lived in the neighborhood beside my best friends in North Carolina. One of the coolest and nicest guys I have ever met.

Met Tred Barta at a fishing contest in South Carolina. I do not care for him and do not support him.

I was very fortunate growing up being able to meet some high profile "celebs". My grandfather was a famous musician and tv personality back in the 50's-80's. A few people that he called friend that I got to spend time with were Johnny and June Cash. They were both very down to earth, loving people. I never saw Johnny turn down an autograph request. Another close friend of my granddad's is Billy Graham and I had the pleasure of spending time with him and his family through the years. I don't think I need to speak into his character. Others I've been able to meet but not necessarily spend an extended amount of time with are Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Krisofferson, Michael Jordan (he did a commercial with my granddad), Jimmy Dean, David Allan Coe, Ric Flair and a few Carolina Panthers (in the off-season a few of them work out at the same gym). The most random "meet" I ever had with a celeb was with Alyssa Milano. She was vacationing in Palm Beach, FL and just happened to be on the same beach where my family had a house in Singer Island. She was very nice and carried on a conversation for 15 minutes or so. I have a picture of her and I somewhere that I'll try to dig up. I'll just say, being off camera definitely didn't take away from her hotness. :D If there was one person I could say was a total bum it would be Jose Canseco. He was at a mall here in Charlotte while playing AAA ball. I very politely said, "hey Mr. Canseco, good luck tonight" and responded with a "get lost kid" and never made eye contact with me. haha!

Here is a picture of my Granddad with Johnny and June in Grandfather Mountain, NC.

I haven't met anyone famous, other than getting a few quick autographs from a few country music singers when I was in my early teens. I went to the rodeo each and every year back then. Not so much into all that now.

I got the autograph of:

Garth Brooks

Davis Daniel

Tracy Byrd

Tracy Lawrence

Wayne Toups

Mark Chestnut

And a few others I can't recall at the moment. All of them seemed nice, all smiles as they signed autographs. Other than that, I don't know squat about them.

What is the deal with Tred Barta? I don't watch his shows all that much but do read a lot of negative things about him.

If it ain't his way its no way and you are the devil. His attitude and mentallity is out of this world. My opinion of him is not a good one, and I cant figure out a way to express it without pissing people off here, so I shall not say anymore that those first two sentences.

I know Chris Neil from the Ottawa Senators. Known his wife since we were kids, she's older than me but her and her family came to my gran's resort for years. Chris is an awesome guy, he's a big fighter and comes across as a bit of a bully in hockey. :D But when he's off the ice you'd never know he'd be a fighter. Down to earth family guy, we played horseshoes together couple times, we were partners. Won all the games too.:D

Stuart Gavin is a very close family friend of ours too. He played in the NHL in the late 80s and early 90s for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars, Hartford Whalers and the Northstars. Another great guy!

Can't say I've met too many famous people, of the ones I have met, they were generally pretty nice, and I'd have to agree with New (dang, I think that's 2 times this month New :D), being in the public eye probably gets pretty old pretty quick.

Michael Waddell and Will Primos are pretty good guys.

I met President Ford, Alex Haley and Rocky Bleier, all real nice guys. Alex Haley signed my Malcolm X book "Semper Paratus" since he is also a veteran of the Coast Guard. Rocky was a good guy too. I asked him how a Notre Dame grad ended up being an enlisted grunt in Viet Nam, we talked for a bit and he explained it was just a matter of timing and miscommunication.

I've also met Tim Andrus and Gary Smoot, both down to earth guys...actually hunted a couple days with Mr. Smoot! :D

Only guy I've met that I don't care much for would be Bob Foulkrod. Not a real nice guy, maybe just a bad day.

I forgot. I met Jimmy Houston and Zell Rowland along with a few other pro fisherman at a 3 day seminar. Jimmy Houston was a card and was very good to honestly answer questions about gear and fishing. Zell was his own biggest fan, but the man does know fishing. Brad Farris is a really good guy. I haven't had the privilege of meeting any other outdoor personalities.

For my brother-in-law's bachelor party we went to go play paintball. After the first game we had some new players join in... none other than Toby Keith, his son, and a couple of friends. He was very nice and they fit right in with our group. Before we left my brother-in-law, who served a tour in the sandbox, thanked Toby for his support, shook his hand and turned to leave. Toby called him back, and spent the next 15 minutes talking with him about his tour of duty and thanking him for his service. A truely nice guy.

I don't really get too star struck when it comes to famous people. Most really don't impress me much and have pretty crappy attitudes. I've never really met any movie stars or famous singers.

I sat next to Jim Edmonds (ex Cardinals center fielder) at a hockey game a few years ago. Not a very fun or talkative guy.

With my job I've met quite a few race car drivers. Carl Edwards I didn't care for..too arrogant. Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace are very likeable guys and down to earth. Kevin Harvick seemed like a decent enough guy. Brendan Gaughan is an easy guy to get to talk to.

I've met Matt Hughes, Micheal Waddell, Pat and Nicole, Stann Potts, Jay Gregory, and Roger Raglin at different hunting shows over the years and they all seemed great.
