WHISKEYSWAMP
I have come across what seams like a decent deal... It's a 1 owner 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD (LT), Crew Cab, 4x4. It is basically loaded with all the bells and whistles and only has 30,000 miles on it. Does anyone have any experience with this truck? He wants $20,000, which is right around private sale value, and is pretty firm on the price. I currently drive a 2002 Chevy Z71 with about 150,000 miles (original owner)... runs and looks good but obviously the miles are getting up there. Shaun_300
What engine is in it? If it's not a diesel it'll be a 6.0L or 8.1L (fuel injected 496 big block). All are good engines, 6.0L is the more common engine. If you have a 1500 series truck now the gas mileage will be considerably less. You're doing good if you can get 14mpg out of them. Other than that, awesome truck, no major problems at all. Good engine, good transmission, good differentials and transfer case. Only common problems I see with these are inner tierods and broken manifold bolts. Nothing major. That seems to be a pretty good price for the amount of miles on it. WHISKEYSWAMP
it is gas 6.0 liter... he said about the most he got out of it is around 14mpg on the highway. I think the best I've ever got out of my current truck is around 20mpg when I first bought it... haven't check it in a while but I imagine it has dropped some since. I wasn't planning on buying something right now but this truck has me pretty tempted... it's basically exactly what I was planning on buying for my next truck and there's no way can I afford a new one. he doesn't have it advertised, just heard through word of mouth he's thinking about selling it. I have the weekend to think about it. Edited January 21, 2011 by WHISKEYSWAMP
Ravin R10 man
Whisky..I'd jump on it if you got the $$...thats a fair price..that truck is worth 20k... with low miles..if he had it serviced at the dealer..you can get A printout of all the work done on it.. maybe with cash you can get him to 18K? or somewhere between? I know of an '05 with 70K miles..pretty much the same truck was worth 23k Edited January 21, 2011 by Mathews XT Man

Sounds like pretty strong money for a 7 year old truck, regardless of miles used. I'd call my bank and ask them for the NADA price, high and low book and loan value. Buying from an individual doesn't afford you any warranty. Check with a dealer and find out what they are asking for similar vehicles. Either way it sure beats 40-45k for a new one. I can afford the payment, but it's also been nice not having a car payment over the last 6 years. I've done quite a bit of research the last couple of days... similar trucks with 3 times the miles are listed for more than he's asking in some cases. Clean NADA trade-in is at $19900 with retail around $23400. Edited January 21, 2011 by WHISKEYSWAMP
wtnhunt
Sounds like a decent deal, if you can get it for your offer price but then trucks that model year here would likely not go quite that high here. Don't know that I would go his full asking price, would have to be in excellent condition. You mentioned new. New are high, almost new used are also really high, pretty unreal what 2008-2010 used chevy and gmc trucks are listing for. To be honest with the promotions for 0 apr gmc is offering I am not sure how anyone is paying almost new prices for almost new trucks when in the long run they finance out more money with the used. Not to try to deter you one way or another here, but heard on the news Friday that there is speculation gas prices will rise to $3.75-4 per gallon by April of this year. Have been doing research on a new or newer trucks here, as much as I need a 4 door truck I am kinda considering a cheap low miles car I can buy outright with cash that gets good mileage for commuting and just keep my old 3/4 ton truck for farm/work. WHISKEYSWAMP
The guy that is selling it doesn't have it advertised... he and his wife were just thinking about selling. He won't budge from the 20k right now. it is in excellent condition and he's never pulled anything with it... it's obvious that the hitch has never been used. He just doesn't need a truck and it sits most of the time other than driving it to work once a week just to drive it. As of now, I'm going to advertise my truck and see what I can get out of it... if I can't get a decent price for it, I'm just going to keep it as it runs great and still has a lot of life left. Gas prices are definitely being considered but I also have an older honda accord that gets 30 mpg that I drive most of the time.

Unless you really need a truck like that or you think it is a deal you can't pass up you may wan't to take a little more time to mull over your thinking. You may be surprised what your 2002 will bring in comparison to what you would have to shell out for the 2004. I still think 20k for a 2004 is TOO much!
