few are as fortuante as me. i married a non hunting girl who bought me hunts to go on, and encouraged me to go hunting every year. we had excellent fortunes and i'd be able to spend anything i wanted for hunting. so, i've been on 8 sheep hunts, 2 mountain goat hunts, moose, caribou, boar, javelina... dozens of great hunts. i had only one questionable outfitter and the rest were great. i was also an outfitter for over 40 years and know what they go through and what to do to help them.

if you do your homework on an outfitter, you will most likely have a great hunt and see lots of game. if there were no restrictions on money i'd do it again.

I believe that the decision to hire a guide is relative to the nature of the hunt you're going on.

If you're doing an OTC tag for whitetails in ******** (wherever), the need for a guide might not be so important.

If after 15 years of applying for a Stone Sheep tag you finally draw......................you will probably want a guide.

Anytime you are out of your element, one should consider a guide/outfitter or at least someone with a little local knowledge. Not only will it increase the chances of success, but, you'll be safer and alot less likely to get into violations of the tresspassing kind. You'll also spend alot less time trying to find animals, and alot more time hunting them.

Hunt swapping is a great low cost method of accomplishing the same thing.........you scratch my back I'll scratch yours.

Speaking of which................................. If anyone knows where I can find a quality Scimitar Oryx.............I know where there are some pretty good Mule deer and Elk.

White Sands Missle Range, NM.

You need to apply by Feb. 2, 2011.

What do I win?;);)

I am on year 4 of applying. Decided I would like to actually go this year, so I applied for Jake. That lucky devil seems to always draw the tags.

The only time I have ever been guided was when muleyman and I and our family went black bear hunting and fishing last spring in northern sask. We live in southern Saskatchewan where there are no black bears and we don't own land up north or really know anybody who does, and we wouldn't really have much time to put bait out anyways. That's why we decided it would just be best to go to an outfitter. We had a really fun and successful trip though!

dang. i feel like a marriage counselor. why don't you offer jeff a mule deer hunt in exchange for your hunt? for years now, i've advocated for a hunt exchange right here on realteee. but, since there are problems involved with folks promising way more than they can deliver, realtree wants no part of that. (i agree) . but, i know you both and will vouch for you both to come through.

White Sands has plenty of Gemsbok Oryx,

but I'm looking for a Scimitar Oryx.

As an interesting side note, the Scimitar Horned Oryx is extinct in it's native North Africa. They now only live on game ranches in Texas, where they happen to be thriving. The bunny huggers are trying to put an end to hunting them, and the ranchers have vowed that if hunting is ended they will exterminate them. Nobody wants them just as pets. I thought I'd like to have one before they are gone.

If you are serious, I might consider it also.

If you want to do it on the cheap there is always the following option.

Texas Parks & Wildlife has a drawing for hunts every summer. it is either $3 or $10 to apply, odds are usually around 1 in 3000 or so. Might want to buy a lottery ticket also.

They taste good.........

And I want one.......................

Maybe we could do an Oryx trip in the spring, and then head up to AK for a little Halibut action in July, topped off with Elk in October........................That's a pretty good year.

I'm sure glad this is your thread Jeff.........................we've kind of made a mess of it.
