Mystery Hunter
Hello, I am new to the forums here and just wanted to say hello to everyone. I live in East Texas and have never hunted for Turkeys. This year I would like to change that. Sense I am new to this and realy do not know what I am doing, I thought I would ask for a little help in this area. I am 53 years old and have hunted for only 4 years total, for Deer, Hogs, Rabbits, Crows but noTurkey's. I am not even sure if we have Turkey's around me. How would I find that out? What signs do I look for? How would you go about Scouting somewhere that you did not know for sure if there were any around? Thanks and Again Hello to all!!:cowboy:

PotashRLS
Welcome aboard. Its nice to have you. As far as turkeys go................turkeys eat, poop and roost. These are what you want to look for. A new area requires scouting from a distance and talking to folks. Word of mouth is probably the first place to start. That will help you narrow your search to an area that has the highest chance of you gaining permission to hunt. Start with the big picture and narrow it down until you are putting boots on the ground.

Mystery Hunter
Thanks Everyone for the welcome and the advice. I have started asking people around me and most have said they have not seen any. One or two have said they have heard them but no sightings. My wife says she has heard them close by. I hope she was not refering to me and the boys! LOL!! May have to go further to south Texas to do any good! I has hoping to find some around here and will keep asking others! I have started looking into calls and there are a lot to choose from. Any Sugesstions will help a first timer, Old Timer!! Thanks Again! Nut
I started out with a box call along with a slate friction call. They are quicker to learn than the mouth call. I discovered that I was unable to use a mouth call with a bad case of gag reflex so I just stayed with the others. You can learn a lot from reading past threads and checking out the site. pointing_dogs_rule
Some of the Texas hunters on this forum may help you out with locating turkeys, otherwise.. 1. go out early in the AM and look for turkeys out feeding (at dawn). 2. go out early in the AM and sit and listen for gobbling. 3. go out late in the PM (at dusk) and look for them coming back to the roost. Good luck to all the dog

Any Sugesstions will help a first timer, Old Timer!! Thanks Again! What part of East Texas? You should have plenty of options around for hunting those mountain Easterns. You'll probably be able to find some in mid March just driving around and listening for them at sun up: just try to find a big valley where the gobbles will echo. For calls, I'd start learning on a simple slate (Knight & Hale Ol Yeller) and a simple box (Lynch's Fool Proof). In my experience, Easterns are a lot more likely to come into friction calls than mouth calls-they also seem to prefer less excited calling.
