Turkeygirl
I wish the excitement that seems to occur at work when I'm there would tone down a little, lol I was actually talking to my manager, we were figuring out an IV and I thought I smelled gas/propane, well as soon as I did, the fire alarm went off. At first I thought coincidental fire drill. Well not when it kept going off and then a burning smell drifted onto the floor and fire trucks showed up! We did our protocol for fires - aka shut patient doors, etc. Our sceretary was actually one of maybe 3 people from the whole hospital who ran down with a fire extinguisher. It was as actually some mop heads caught fire in the dryer in the laundry room. It probably took about 45 minutes before the all clear was given. Thank goodness it wasn't worse to where we would have needed to evacuate patients. If you ever think about complaining about fire drills at your work, think again, they happen for a reason! dbHunterNY
Way to go Milton from Office Space! Just kidding! Well it's good there was a quick response time by the staff.
OJR
I'm glad to hear things turned out OK! It could have been a lot worse!
PotashRLS
Mass evacuations are not pretty. You guys dodged a bullet there. :stretcher::stretcher::stretcher::stretcher::stretcher::stretcher::stretcher:

stevebeilgard
while i'm glad all turned out well, i'm actually surprised you didn't react fast to the fire alarm. you're always a very cautious one. i got under my desk just reading that one. lol (the younger ones will have to watch a 1950's air raid school drill film where we kids were taught to get under our desk to save us from a nuclear attack. i think only orlan, buckee and i remember.) Turkeygirl
Well I did react quickly. Ran down to start closing patient doors and hallway doors..that's our protocol. Rest of my staff did what else needed to be done. I have to stay on the floor to make sure patients are ok and to evacuate if need be. I try to stay calm and cool, start panicking and then patients pick up on that. It all went smoothly, just mentally we thought it was a drill, there had been talk of having one... fly
I've never experienced an actual fire at a hospital, but we sure drill a lot. Glad to hear it was handled quickly and resolved without major issue. So has the glimmer of being a nurse lost its luster any since graduation?
