doubleA
Lance86, First of all, welcome to the Realtree Forums...... Living in South Texas where we are often over run with feral hogs, the best rifle to shoot one with is the one you happen to have at the time. The internets has sorta added to the idea of the "super unstoppable man eater hog". While I confess that every now and then there are some bigger ones out there, most are going to be in the 100-200lb range and no harder to kill than a whitetail. Hit well in the vitals, they die. Hogs are not bullet proof, though the really big ones can be tough if hit in the front shoulder where a heavy grizzle forms helping to protect the vitals. Of course head/brain shots will always work, but so will shots that a bowhunter hunter would take like slightly quartering away tight behind the shoulder. Having killed 1000's of hogs with many different weapons, the 25-06 being one of them, will fit the bill nicely. Good luck and remember....the only good hog is a dead hog! i'm your huckleberry
Lance 86, give the 6.5 x 55 swed some thought for heavy shoulder plates, i personally have taken a wild russian boar with that caliber, the s.d on the 6.5 140gr bullets is unbelievable, comparable to the 30 cal 190 and 7mm, 162gr with very lite recoil similar to the 25-06. This is just an opinion, Happy boar hunting. Edited February 3, 2011 by i'm your huckleberry
Grady269
I think AA was dead on, the only thing I would add is bullet choice. I went on a hog hunt year before last and they asked me was what kind of bullet I used. They recommended either a Nosler Partition or Barnes Triple Shock (they asked me in advance of the hunt, when I booked). I opted for the Nosler Partition and I took my.257 Roberts on the hunt. Very similar to the 25-06 and was by no means under gunned. The outfit I hunted with really did not care what caliber you brought just recommended you use one of those (2) bullets. Texan_Til_I_Die
Something that shoots fast and holds a lot of bullets! I've killed 5 or 6 this year with my bow, a few with my 7 mag while deer hunting, and another half dozen or so with my AR15. With the AR, if they're over 60 or 70 lbs, I'll put one behind their ear. Otherwise, just pop 'em at the back of the shoulder. 25-06 is plenty. These aren't tanks.
hungry hunter
Dave ya hit it on the head. Florida has the same problems with them rooters. I have taken hundreds with .270, .243, and .308 all do the job just right.:gun2:
PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I would add that the best gun is the deer size caliber that you can hit what you are aiming at. I really like the nosler partitions for their accuracy but that is my rifle not yours.

WIwhitetailhunter
A 7mm mag placed in the earhole does the trick! Tracking distance required = zero
Jeramie
.25-06 is a great round and will easily get the job done. It will also duel as a great whitetail/ mule deer/ antelope round! I do not own a .25-06 but love the round. I wouldnt hesitate to hunt with one.
LETMGROW
If you don't care about the meat a .50 cal will do the job. LOL. Any cal. will be effective if you have a well placed shot. The big ones deserve a bigger cal. like .308 or 30-06.
bruse
I used to live in AL and I hunted GA and AL for deer and hogs with 25/06. I used 100 grain corelokts. the blood trail wasnt the best but they never went more than 20 yds so who needs a blood trail. good luck on your hunt. brian
huntnfish
25-06 should be just fine. I have seen .243s do great on them so you will not be undergunned.
johnf
25-06 should be just fine. I have seen .243s do great on them so you will not be undergunned. I've got a buddy who only uses 243 and has killed over 400lb hogs with it. He said he's never had to rail more than 30-40 yards.
