Tominator
Our board of education announced a bunch of cuts at last night's meeting. At least a half million dollars will be cut for next year, which includes cutting one teacher here at the high school. My position is number 17 on a list of 21 cuts in the next round, which might happen. I will need to apply for a continuing contract next fall if those cuts do in fact happen. This economy really sucks, and now education is REALLY starting to feel it.
fly
I hear ya Chris! The state of IL is in even worse shape. No raise for the past 2 years now and we've been informed not to expect one next year either. Some state schools are making cuts, mine is not at this time, but has a hold on staff hires. If our secretary quits we do without a secretary.
The_Kat
I hope things work out for ya Chris. My buddy Trent just got word the school he is coaching at will be letting him go in June and the basketball coach will be taking the softball program as well. Trent is the softball coach. Jenn teaches at the same school, and so far we believe her position is safe. Time will tell!
wtnhunt
Man that is really lousy Chris. Would have figured you would have been safe with getting your masters, not sure what is happening in these parts right now with education jobs, last I had checked math and science were still short for the state. Hope everything works out for you. Funding shortages in this state or federal? Suppose this Obamaeconomics and education maybe don't go so hand in hand as he led people to believe, hearing it is only gonna get better with inflation rates escalating as a result of fuel prices being driven higher. LETMGROW
Oddly enough we have a government which will allow us to provide our citizens with a sub-standard education, yet I saw a news piece announcing a $ 7,500 " cash for plug ins " program. The govt. will give a check to anyone who buys a totally electric car. Are our priorities a little skewed? Lynn
BearClaw
The states don't have any money and the Feds don't. In my opinion it's the results of years and years of out of control spending. Our Congressmen and State Legislators just spend and spend and spend until now we are trillions of dollars in debt. It won't impact them, esp the Congresspeople. They will probably make more when they retire than they do now. Where will it end?
LETMGROW
The states are broke. The Fed. is broke. Yet we continue to subsidize every obscure little country in the world. When will we learn to take care of ourselves and let others fend for themselves. Maybe if we wern't such good babysitters these countries would grow up and stand on their own. Adjam5
Education is quite important for OUR children, but with all the cuts that have to be made; to make a attempt to balance the budget...sadly eduction is feeling them also. Spending is out of control and the enormous sense on entitlement needs to end. But hurting our children through cutting funding for schools doesn't seem like the right path. Hope you hold on Chris...Unemployment bites...I have been there numerous times.
92xj
That's a bummer dude. I wish there was something I could say or do, but I have nothing. I wish you luck and will say many prayers and have good thoughts.
stevebeilgard
chris, i think your masters will keep you ahead of the pack. i see most states suffering greatly in the next 10 years or so. our politicians were sent to washington with a mission to cut spending and i believe they'll do it. i see most states filing bankruptcy in the next few years. Tominator
Thanks for the thoughts and prayers folks. Hopefully they don't get that far down on "Level 2" cuts. I'm senior as far as number of years goes in my department, but I'm the only one that doesn't have a continuing contract. The continuing contract is a formality really, so hopefully that will be done before the cuts.
PotashRLS
While things are not very good out there, it shows that no one is exempt from feeling the pinch. While I commend you and all teachers, the well that pays the bills is drying up fast. Raising taxes on those that are already laid off or working lesser jobs so that the status quo can continue is no longer (or ever was in my opinion) appropriate or responsible. Keep your chin up man. wtnhunt
Seems in the past few years I recall reading about some school states or school systems rejecting or not qualifying for federal funding due to their not agreeing or meeting the terms for eligibility, was kinda curious if this might be in part responsible here. Not to try to hijack Chris's thread here, but no doubt spending is out of control and priorities are totally screwed up from many city local level governments on up. Then to seems corruption is also at all time highs and those taking what is not theirs or lining their "friends" pockets, while those getting caught in many cases are getting nothing more than a slap on the wrist and even being allowed to stay in office. Voters should be outraged. Pretty disgusting that a place where money is most needed(education) that cuts are being made. Children are the future and only makes sense that giving them a better education will only help the future of this country. Thought part of Obama's campaign promise was encouraging education with an increase in the budget plan for spending there, obvious that is not the case, gotta wonder how things are working out for those who fell for his hype. Pretty sad that dollars are being wasted in the manner they are and rather than increased funding there are cuts.
Tominator
Our district's reasoning for the cuts are based on the fact that the state of Ohio is reducing our funds by 13%. Have to agree with fly, the state of Ohio is asking tax payers to pay their property tax bill and a lot of these people don't have a source of income. The proverbial "blood from a turnip." We jumped through the hoops to get the "race to the top" money from the Obama plan, but I don't know how all of this is going to affect our district, if at all. I don't think you're allowed to use RTTT funds to pay teachers. That money is ear marked for certain programs and equipment.
Ohiobucks
Hate to hear this Chris, unfortunately it is happening everywhere. I'm not looking forward to a few years down the road with our school district building the new high school. The majority of funding for the actual build was through the state, with the balance coming from local property tax. What I fear is that our district did not consider what the operational costs of owning and maintaining a big new building are going to be..... Without the teachers to utilize that equipment and those programs would seemingly be useless, no? Suppose that imo fits what I would call mismanagement/misappropriation. Folks need held accountable on all levels for making such decisions. Pretty sure there has been evidence to support that when student/teacher ratios go beyond reasonable those education systems fail miserably. Very sad to see this taking place in this country. ruttinbuc
the troubling part of it all is that there are hardly any bright lights on the horizon.
RangerClay
I'm sorry to hear this Chris. I hope and pray things work out for you. We are feeling the pinch here as well. Our high school cut the entire business department last year. I looks like special ed, music & art will be on the chopping block this year. Tominator
What I fear is that our district did not consider what the operational costs of owning and maintaining a big new building are going to be..... Yep, that's pretty common Tom. My father in law's district about 20 years ago built a brand new elementary school, and, I kid you not, it sat empty for 2 years because they couldn't afford to staff it. Same thing's going to happen to our district. They're dumping 17 million into this school. They will have 3 brand new computer labs and nobody to staff it. How long do you think the computers will last with no teachers to monitor it? Frustrating.
Chester
Sorry to hear about this, times are getting hard or getting harder for others. My wife works for the board of education here in our county and she tells me that the system may lose two teachers and no telling how many aids. Ravin R10 man
we consoladated our school sysytem years ago..instead of building a new building....we split and went 3 ways..now all those districts are having trouble keeping the budgets solvent with dwindling enrolment.. Times are tough and it dont look like it will get better soon..cuts must be made
dbHunterNY
I swear that when things get tight they boot the wrong teachers it seems. Some part of the budget is inflated that doesn't need to be and nobody notices. Also a teacher that cares and teaches well gets the boot and then all of the sudden people find out a year later that the supervisor or someone else got a raise. Seems like school boards are useless and single sided too. When people do get in they're bulldozed into ground unless they shutup and agree. Tominator
District personnel guy published the seniority list, and I'm no. 1 (most senior) in my department. I was surprised to see I'm no. 10 senior in the whole building, and only 7 of those are teachers. The other 2 senior to me are the guidance counselors. Personnel guy is coming down tomorrow and I'm going to get the specifics, but according to this list published today, I would be the last business person cut. They'd have to cut the whole program for me to lose my job. I'm feeling better.
