Turkeygirl
such a rip...and I think I mention this like every time I go there. I picked up a few things that I can't get anywhere else really but for instance fly tying stuff, I can get from a place I mail order in PA cheap compared to GM which was at least 1$-$2 more! They had alot of camo on sale but it sure wasn't marked down much to make me want to buy it....everything there seemed so over priced, more so than recently. It's a place you either hit on the right day or not...Anyone else find GM like that?
wtnhunt
Anyone else find GM like that? Don't wanna come across as bashing, but yeah you can count me as being not so much a fan of the gander store closest to us or their customer service/management. Honestly don't feel like they want my business, too many times I have been in there and the majority of employees come across that they don't want to be bothered and just don't want to help folks who are not their buddies or regular customers. Don't get me wrong there are a couple there that are helpful but for the most part most are not. It is not a people thing related to this region either because I walk in our small town local lowes here and am practically bombarded with fine smiling people each and everytime asking if I need help and I think that has everything to do with their management. Prices are a bit high on pretty well everything at the gander store, rare anymore that we get to the store and even rarer that we actually buy anything there. Surprisingly dick's sporting goods in some cases actually has better prices and I find more smiling faces and people willing to help there. Most of my business for sporting goods/hunting related stuff goes to cabelas online and to wal mart.
NiteRunner
I have 2 GM stores in my area. The one usually has competitively priced things and will have some really good clearance buys and nice helpful employees. Now the other one is crappy! Hard to believe that they can very like that. redkneck
50 miles for me to drive, so I dont get there too often. I enjoy going, like the 90 mile drive to bass pro shop, it gives me a chance to get my hands on a lot of things I normally wouldn't see in my local small mom and pop shops. That being said, aside from the sale items, most of the stuff is a bit overpriced, and I'll pick up most of my things online these days anyway out of convenience and price as well. PotashRLS
I agree Ruth. The Green Bay Gander Mountain is about the same. It is unfortunate because they have a pretty good selection of hunting clothes. I just got their "Clearance" flyer in the mail. It was filled with guns with sale prices that were not so special. RangerClay
It depends on what I what I want to buy if I go to GM or not. Yeah these things may be a buck or two more expensive but when you add it up, it's cheaper than the shipping and handling tacked on. I rarely buy camo at GM because it is so expensive. If I buy camo I usually go to Dick's. They sell other brands and have better sales. GM has never been a place to buy fly fishing supplies. They buy so little of it that they have to mark it up. I always go to the stores around the Salmon River for that stuff.
Flintlock1776
It is a good store for those in less populated areas that the big box store will not move into. It fits a niche.
BearClaw
I like their brand of hunting clothing. I've not had to deal with them on a customer service level but have found their employees helpful when asked. Some of their equipment is over priced but I buy that stuff elsewhere. The drive to Cabela's and Bass Pro is too far but I have several GM's within driving distance. I need to try clothes on so they are convenient in that way. I generally like shopping there and am a pretty devoted Gander guy!
Shaun_300
We don't have Gander Mountain in Canada. I've been to a few in the US and all have seemed great to me. Mind you we didn't have the outdoors stores we do now when I went there. Seems like everything is cheaper in the US so the prices seemed awesome to me! Staff was great in all of them. I've been to the Duluth MN, Marquette MI and Syracuse NY locations. I think I was at one in Ohio when I was younger, can't remember where exactly though. ruttinbuc
I was never in a Gander Mountain store. I pass a couple on my way to Lake Ontario, but never had the urge to stop. When I look around here I really don't need to add anything. Even Cabelas which is close enough does not get too many visits unless they have a super price on something. it will be a very, very cold planet when that happens. Your best prices for a lot of things are online. It might take a bit but you can find it.
Missilelock
After our house fire, I went to cabelas to buy all new camo for my son and I. I got a real sticker shock there and didnt buy anything. Stopped at GM in Washington Pa. on a whim & found a great sale going on closeouts. bought over a thousand bucks (sticker) of camo for $300. I must have hit them at the right time!
Ravin R10 man
It's a rich mans store for sure...they got it all,for a price.. but not much for sales...i go to look mostly
billkay
I'm biased because my son is a manager at our local GM. I've bought plenty of stuff there at good prices even though I have botha Bass Pro and Cabelas within 15 minutes of me. GM is on FaceBook and seem to respond to everyone individually with claims of poor customer service. Maybe talk to them there about the problems with employees and stuff. Last week I bought $400 of RT camo for under $200, I thought that was a pretty good deal. The have most if not all their insulated camo at 40% off here. TBow
I've never been into a Gander Mountain store, but there is one about an hour away in Watertown, NY. I have to cross the border to go there, so I wouldn't head that way unless there was another purpose for the trip. I can appreciate the comments about poor service. We have a chain of hunting/fishing/outdoors stores here in Canada, that I will never grace their doors ever again. There's another local sporting goods store that I absolutely can't stand as well. My opinions about these stores is mostly in part due to poor service, or as I like to put it, service with a poor attitude. I have only ever been to a USA Cabelas once, and was astounded by the excellent and friendly service I received there, not to mention prices that pleasantly floored me when compared to high cdn prices. High prices for just about anything in Canada is generally the norm, and you have to do a lot of shopping on line or browsing a ton of stores to find any bargains, be they Bass Pro Canada or Cabelas Canada. I find I've been doing a lot more research online prior to laying out cash for just about anything anymore. I pay particular attention to product and consumer reviews and price-match whenever it's available. Retailers may not like price-matching too much, but too bad! Quit trying to rip me off! BearClaw
You can get poor service in a Gander and also in a Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop. Although I rec'd good service in all three I take my bow to be worked on at a shop one hour away even though there is one in my town. The one here has poor service and I'd rather make the drive. The shop I go to has done a lot of work on my bow for free. I think he appreciates the fact that I drive so far to get there. I once shopped at a chain department store and stopped a lady in the aisle and asked if they had a particular item and she said no, they didn't carry that. As soon as she left that item was directly behind her on the wall! I guess it depends on who these stores hire but customer service seems to a thing of the past. They hire kids that need a job and the expertise is long gone!
The Kid
i know the manager at our local GM and he hooks me up pretty good,, I got a double bull 360 for 150.
Tecumseh
I don't know how they get away with the pices they charge for rifle and pistol ammo?
Flintlock1776
They serve their niche. If folks do not like it they should take there wallet elsewhere. Angst is zu hoch hier, IMHO.
marshyhope
I found it hard to get any service from the employees in the firearms section. Usually first impressions stick with me. I went in to buy a new rifle. I had in mind what I wanted and I found it. I don't know how many times some of the guys just walked by and didn't even acknowledge me. Or they were just standing around behind the counter talking to each other. Or they would ask a male that was shopping if they could help them. I could feel my blood pressure rising.....and I'm a red head. Finally I yelled,"HEY, I want to buy this rifle!" They weren't long getting to me after that. Then I told him to sell me a scope for it. ( I already knew what I wanted, but I wanted him to work for it since he pizzed me off.) Following year, my boyfriend ( yes, I'm a girl) gave me $500 in gift cards to GM. I wanted a crossbow so we went shopping. My boyfriend was standing at one end of the counter while I was at the other end. I was there first. Guess what. The MALE behind the counter approached my boyfriend first to offer assistance. My boyfriend looked across at me, winked, and said, " Uh, she's the one you want to talk to." Few minutes later, the employee was ringing me up and I gave him the gift cards and some cash. As we said our thanks, the employee says to my boyfriend, "Now all ya gotta do is taker her huntin'." Oooooh, no he didn't. I just smiled and said, "He doesn't hunt. He stays home and sees that the porch light is on for me." Sorry about the rant, buy these sort of things really get me. I usually shop for hunting supplies at local place. I try to support the ma and pa stores as often as possible.
