Shaun_300
Have that program on my computer. Used it a few times for quick sight ins where I didn't have room to shoot 150 yards but wanted a 150 yard 0. Sighted it in at close range and it was pretty darn close! Works good. LETMGROW
I don't trust them These charts are good entertainment, but I don't hold much faith in them for my sight ins. There are just too many variables in shooting to trust a generic chart. Things like barrel length, rifling, crown, action type, barrel wear, ambient temperature, humidity etc. It is a well known fact no two firearms shoot exactly the same. Close, maybe, but not close enough that I would depend solely on a charted info. These charts are developed under controlled conditions with a test firearm. Unlike any conditions you or I will experience. If I am going to rely on a long shot, I want to know exactly where bullet placement will be with my gun and me shooting it. When I find a favorite factory load I will buy several boxes of that load. Oftentimes I find lot numbers are different and point of impact are slightly different. Usually if you check lot numbers and buy two or three boxes of the same, you will minimize chance of pattern spread. Change lot numbers and you should recheck zero. I had a friend buy a new gun a few years ago. Not a cheap gun either. He scoped it with a fairly expensive scope. Off to another friends home to sight it in. Shortly afterward I talked to him and asked how he liked his new gun. "Great" he said. It is dead on at 75 yards. I asked him about longer ranges. He told me it should be ok at 2-300 yards. I asked him, " how do you know"? He pulled out a ballistics chart copied from an ammo catalog, showed it to me, and pointed out points of impact on a graph. When I asked him if he was going to try longer ranges he hedged a little and said he didn't know anyone with a range long enough. I referred him to a local sportsman's club with a 300 yard range. This club has covered benches and is well equipped. My friend asked how much using the range would cost. I told him it was free to members. I then told him membership was $ 10 yearly. Wow, I can't afford that! The following fall he missed a deer at what he said was a couple hundred yards. After I asked him about sighting his gun in at a range he sheeplishly said, " I didn't have time to". End of conversation. I really wanted to tell him what to do with his ballistic chart.
