slugshooter
Was reading a story little bit ago about how the veterans cmte. at the hall failed to elect anyone to the hall of fame this year which means Ron Santo has another year to beg for a Hall of Fame spot, my one question is this, what did he do to earn a spot in the Hall of Fame, I mean, apparently from the big banner of him hanging from the rafters inside Wrigley Field that I saw 2 years ago he is obviously revered in Chicago, but I was looking at his stats and they aren't that impressive, he was an All-Star, but that doesn't get you into the hall, he has a .277 lifetime batting avg and 342 homers, which is commendable but not really hall worthy, if he is hall worthy than Dale Murphy definitely is with all his gold gloves, silver sluggers, all star appearances, 396 homers and 2 MVP's. I just can't see why Ron Santo believes he deserves a spot in the hall, and having a story every year about him sitting by the phone waiting for them to call definitely isn't helping him, it comes off to me as almost begging, IMHO. DSGB
Re: Baseball Hall of Fame I agree with you that if he gets in, Murphy should be in too. Roger Maris didn't get in, either.
Guest Finn
Re: Baseball Hall of Fame He's popular here in Chicago, but like you said, not Hall of Fame worthy. Why isn't Dale Murphy in?
slugshooter
Re: Baseball Hall of Fame Murphy always falls short when votes are in, he always seems to get enough votes to stay on the ballot though, I cross my fingers every time it's time to vote. slugshooter
Re: Baseball Hall of Fame [ QUOTE ] Who's Ron Santo? [/ QUOTE ] Exactly!! But, just in case you actually don't know who he is, he played for the Cubs and retired in 1975 I think. Apparently, he thinks he should be in the HoF without the numbers to support it. Being beloved in the city you played in is great and all, but for the last couple of years, every time it's time for HoF voting, there's a story about him eagerly awaiting the phone call and then being disappointed when it doesn't come, the latest story a couple days ago was how disappointed he was the the Veterans committee didn't call him since he is no longer eligible for the regular ballot. He just comes off as being desperate to me, which, I don't think the Veterans committee or the Baseball Writers Assoc. are going to be persuaded by desperation and how popular he was in Chicago.
