Tominator
Took out the trash last night and heard some rustling around the front end of my car, figuring it was a mouse I got a broom handle and investigated. Turns out it was a skunk making a bed for the night. I backed off and got a longer pole and proceeded to try and convince this skunk he needs to take a nap somewhere else. I grabbed a couple of snowballs and tossed them in the box he was sitting in, then I took the longer pole and very gently prodded him with it. He raised his tail once so I backed off. I kept poking him and he finally jumped out of the box and walked behind some carpet remnants I had out there. I poked him again and got him to move to the west side of the garage, at which point my wife pulled up in the driveway. As I was warning my wife he walked up to my grill. I got my wife in the house and I layed down with the extension pole and basically pushed him towards the door. He got to the corner and tried to hide by my golf bag, so I pushed the golf bag and he had enough. He walked out to the yard and stood there for a minute. I had thoughts of going and loading up a shotgun, but he ended up running off across the field. This morning I checked my live trap but nothing was in it, but the smell of the skunk was pretty bad by my pole barn. I think the little DB took up residence out there. I looked around with my flashlight and didn't see anything, so I got in the truck quickly and took off. I hate skunks.

Ohiobucks
Make sure to tell your kids to keep the garage door shut. I don't have skunks, but the neighbors cat has been caught one too many times in our garage. :gun_bandana: :angel1:
Strut10
Where else would a ploecat live but in a pole barn????? The skunk rut is definitely in full swing here.
wtnhunt
Sounds like you need to see just how good you are with the pellet gun and go for a head shot. lol Our dogs musta spooked one back about a week ago, sprayed in front of the house and woke me up in the middle of the night. Guess it is that time, think their breeding season is February to March. Seems they have preferred places to get hit on the highway, bout a mile stretch of road between here and town there has been 2 to 3 get hit about every other day. Took a ride to the wife's grandparents over the weekend and was the same in Missouri and Arkansas, seems about every 10-15 miles we would run up on 2 or 3 dead in the road. RangerClay
I used to be a state trapper. Made a ton of money this time of year on skunks. Take a hotdog and stab it with a fork a few times. Now drop it in a sandwich bag with some pickle juice or white vinegar . Use it it for trap bait. You will have him in the trap in no time. When you catch him throw an old blanket over the trap. He will not spray what he cannot see. Then throw him in a river. If you try to release him, he may not want to walk out of the trap. I've caught a few over the years, accidentally while trying to get the coons out of my sweetcorn. I need to try the drowning method, but I don't have a pond or river. I think a barrel of water would just freeze up. I wonder how much glycol you'd have to use in order to keep a 50 gal. drum from freezing in say 5-10 degree weather? The_Kat
Thats one critter I have not seen even one time while up here in PA. Good luck on the stake out!
Tominator
Make sure to tell your kids to keep the garage door shut. Yep, new rule..... I normally close it, but Heather had a corporate dinner to attend, so I kept it open because Joe had the other garage door opener. Lesson learned. More than I would want to spend to get rid of a skunk, but I am a bit of a cheapskate. Would guess probably around a 1 to 3 to 1 to 4 ratio. If you are gonna go that route you probably would not need to completely fill the barrel to submerge the trap and probably would not take long for the skunk to drown, really would not worry too much about the water freezing before it drowned. redkneck
Just don't kick him.... I did that once....... once. .... been a LOT of skunks on the road this year, also seen more red birds and hawks than usual.
wtnhunt
I'm thinking of season long skunk killing. Ummm ok, still think I would opt for a head shot if it were me.:D Supposed to be an early spring wasn't it, you expecting to have continued single digits? Kinda surprised it is still that cold there, in the upper 50's here today but a cold front is moving in. Was supposed to hit 70, thankfully it has not gotten that warm. This severe weather around 6 pm here is supposed to blow up and get real nasty. Hoping that the cooler temps helps keep thing more stable. Strut10
............. something in used cat litter they don't like..... Yep. It's called "cat crap" and even skunks can't stand it. :poke: Never could figure out why people kept pets that necessitated having boxes of the stuff in their house........especially when, even, skunks know better. layin on the smackdown
Yep...I know what youre talking about - on a first paw basis...So about two weeks ago, it was my 31st birthday - Feb 15th - and i got home from work at about 11 p.m. Grabbed a few adult beverages and headed to the garage to continue boiling a deer head my neices found for a Euro mount. My wife is outside with myself and our two dogs. Im standing there enjoying whats left of my birthday watching this Euro advancing through its stages and my lab takes off - wife immediatly starts yelling - i immediatly think there is no reason to be yelling - wife starts yelling louder and says the phrase..."Grabe the gun!"....so the neandrothal i am, i dont grab the .22 and instead start running out of the garage and in the direction my screaming wife is pointing.....I round the corner and am greeted by the sight of my black lab "Gage" about 3 feet behind a skunk that is running away from him with its tail straight up...At the same point i rounded the corner i was also greeting with the most nose hair burning, breath taking, putrid, gag reflexing stench that i swear i could taste. So i immediatly run the other direction and begin screaming my dogs name as if he would actually listen to anything at that moment. About 30 seconds pass and my dog comes rounding the corner foaming and drueling out the mouth like a fat kid after a 100 yd dash...For some reason, i instinctively walked up to my dog to smell him, i think in an effort to confirm he had actually been sprayed - a genious moment in my life - and he was in fact sprayed...point blank....directly in the face, particularly in the section of face that lies between the bottom of the nose and the upper lip. It sucked - and still sucks. Kill them ALL! Dan Edited February 27, 2011 by layin on the smackdown

I need to try that. We got the odor of the critter on my property, thankfully, not too close. I set out my trap but all I got was a raccoon using corn. I have to try you stink bait. I took the coon to the state park and let him go. If I get the skunk, he will be toast.
Turkeygirl
LOL Chris! Hee hee hee:-p We actually had a skunk once make home in a horse stall...not sure if it was sick or what, finally got it outside and shot it with the .22...thing would not die...finally did, but yikes. Another time had a sick fox huddling behind the rabbit hutches. I grabbed the.22 and one shot did that thing in...it was sick for sure. then another time we had a fox in the barn trying to get chickens. It was sick as well, Andy stood outside with his shotgun loaded with bird pellet, I peeked in the barn and saw the fox there, when it saw me, ran out and BOOM, dead fox.
