I went to my hunting store tonight to see if my 870 had come in yet and we decided since the model i was getting was brand new that it was getting to close to turkey season to be hoping to get it in. So he gave me a deal on another gun and I took it.

I got a Winchester 1300 pump shotgun. It looks to be a great gun and I was hoping any of you other fellow winchester 1300 owners could give me some insight on how it is and what loads work good in it and whether the choke that comes in it is good. The owner of the shop recommended Federals new waud control flight shotshell. Thanks

Re: Just got my first and brand new turkey gun!!!

My backup turkey gun is an NWTF Black Shadow Edition Winchester 1300. I absolutely love that gun. The choke that came with it patterned pretty good out to 30-35 yards with Winchester Hi-Velocity #4s.

The Federal Premium FliteControl loads are new for 2005 and I have some on order. I ordered some of the regular copper plated lead and the HeavyWeight loads. I really like the concept behind the new technology. The wadding opens from the back instead of the front. Go to http://www.federalpremium.com and watch the video clip...it convinced me to try them.

Re: Just got my first and brand new turkey gun!!!

My son used a Winchester 1300 to kill his first two birds last year. We used Nitro Ammo's H378 4x5x7 shells. That shell gives a great pattern with the Rhino .660 choke. We had tried Remington's hevi-shot with the Winchester choke but it failed miserably, getting only 2 to 3 pellets in the kill zone.

You just need to go out and test it before buying anything new, though. Each gun will pattern differently, even the same brands. If I were you, I try copper shot number 6's first, #5's second, #4's third. Good luck.
